Pretty Woman (1990)
When it comes to 1990’s chick flicks, Julia Roberts is practically the living embodiment of the rom-com genre. From Steel Magnolias and Nottinghill to Runaway Bride, her body of work is almost universally loved by women, and tolerated by the men in their lives. Yet there is one film in the pantheon of Roberts’ repertoire which all men do secretly love: Pretty Woman. So this week we dive into the 4$ bin and pull out the supposedly modern-day version of Cinderella. The story of a woman, Vivian (Julia Roberts) forced into the underground world of prostitution as a way to survive in Los Angeles. She becomes a week-long “companion” for an extremely wealthy businessman, Edward (Richard Gere). Sadly after spending a week in Beverly Hills luxury and living the life she'd always dreamed of.... she's forced to return to her sad existence and again sell her body for money. We fired up the old VCR again this week for the classic Weird Science: The tale of two horny friends Gary and Wyatt who are tired of being social outcasts and not getting any action. With Wyatt's parents gone for the weekend, the two perverts try to create the world’s first real doll. Using only Wyatt's computer, random photos from their wish boards and a Barbie doll the duo gives birth to their “perfect woman” with the limitless powers of a genie. Hilarity ensues including group showers, new interracial friendships, random bikers, dated sports cars, and a magical sucking chimney.
