Episode 97 - When Parents Treat Their Children As Their Partners

Jason starts us off with a check in about him dealing with the cold. The darkness and then the cold has made him wonder why he continues to live where he is. Jason identifies that because he moved so often when he was a child, he wanted to make sure that his children don’t have to go through that. The situation has left him feeling helpless. Jason and Edward discuss his plans to move once the children are out of school and out of the house.

Our Deep Dive this week, delves into the subject of covert incest. Coming from the book “Silently Seduced” by Kenneth M. Adams. Jason read it several years ago, and after three tries Edward has finished reading the book. Jason and Edward discuss their own experiences with one of their parents taking them on as a proverbial partner to get their needs met while making Jason and Edward feel special. Edward discusses in some depth how his mother’s behavior towards him has shaped his relationships with women, as well as many other areas of his life. The discussion winds it’s way through warning signs as both children and adults as well as some resources and a few things that can be done on your own. Ultimately the work should be done with a therapist as it is a deep trauma.
