S3: Ep2: The Mindful Olympian - Adam Burgess

This week The Mojo Podcast meets Adam Burgess, TeamGB canoe slalom medal prospect at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.

In a sport where the margins are so fine, where your course is constantly moving and flowing and the difference between winning Gold and coming in 10th maybe a couple of seconds. Success is as likely to be down to how you set up mentally for a run as your physical preparedness and skill. Adam talks about how he has plugged a more holistic, mindful set of practices to help him find a greater chance of success.

We talk about how he has learned to be incredibly present and literally stay in the flow. How he quietens any doubt in his mind by filling his ‘box’ with positive intention
And how he deliberately trains for highly pressurised situations.

As an elite athlete, naturally we talk about dealing with the set-backs of injury and failure. Adam reveals he’s embraced a more holistic approach to living that have allowed him to bounce back faster and better than before. Drawing inspiration from yoga, meditation and breathwork.

About Adam:
From humble beginnings on the river Trent in Stone, to the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2021. ‘Good person first, athlete second’ is Adam’s personal mantra which inspires his approach to training and life. His passion for canoe slalom relays an infectious energy to those who surround him. He is curious and loves learning. Adam believes his variety of interests helps to drive creativity. Drawing experience from one area of his life to another. He has a degree in Sports Science and Management from Nottingham Trent University. More recently Adam gained professional qualifications as a yoga teacher and speciality coffee brewer. To Adam, this Olympic campaign is about more than just the GOLD medal he aims for. This is about sharing this unique experience as he invites supporters on this journey with him.
