The Cheat Sheet: Backyards and Buses

Note: Apologies — in this episode, we made an inaccurate statement that indicated that personality disorders were not the same as mental illness. This is wrong. Personality disorders fall under the wider umbrella of mental illness. We've updated the recording in order to reflect this and provide more context. We apologize again.

This episode was originally published on The Murder Sheet's main feed on October 4, 2024.

The Cheat Sheet is The Murder Sheet's segment breaking down weekly news and updates in some of the murder cases we cover. In this episode, we'll talk about several cases out of Indiana, as well as a bus hijacking in California and a sheriff accused of murder in Kentucky.

The thoughts he’s shared with us on the Delphi murders case and true crime in general are just so insightful. We definitely find myself citing Jayson a lot. He makes us believe in the bright side of true crime, the compassionate side, the side that can really make a positive difference in the world. He’s really helped us adjust to some of the challenges around reporting on true crime and tragedy — and that is very much in keeping with his show.

Listening to the Silver Linings Handbook is very much like getting to sit around a campfire with a fascinating group. It’s fun, it’s intriguing, it’s surprising, it’s often about learning and growing from suffering. You get to hear important conversations that can inspire you to consider new perspectives and take action in your own life. You also get to learn so much on mental health, wellbeing, the criminal justice system, religion, and more!

Those experiences have helped shape him into a truly empathetic person — somebody who gets what it’s like to have your world turned upside down. He brings that gift to his interviews. These are unscripted, authentic, engaging talks.

Jayson covers true crime, but his podcast gets into so much more. Silver Linings Handbook really makes us have hope for the future and a belief in humanity. If you’re into true crime, this is the perfect thing for you — it’s human stories that don’t shy away from the bad stuff while still being incredibly life-affirming and hopeful.

Shootout at the Carbarn

Shootout at the Carbarn

Early on a summer morning in 1919, cops and robbers faced off in Sioux City, Iowa. The showdown kicked off at the Carbarn, an unassuming eatery dedicated to the city's streetcar workers. Leading the charge on the side of the law was Detective James Garfield Britton, a veteran officer who'd lost his job as police chief over rising crime rates. The bandits were captained by one Donald "Red" Burzette, a brigand among bootleggers who often resorted to violence to steal loot. That morning, both sides exchanged around 17 gunshots in 10 seconds. But who was left standing in the Carbarn when the shooting stopped?Special thanks to Haley Aguirre for her insight and research help. This follow-up episode looks into some of the suspects who've been discussed in connection with the case over the years. From drug connections to unwitting recognitions, these are the theories that have swirled around the case for years. After the Borderline

After the Borderline

After murdering 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Ian David Long turned his gun on himself and took his own life.
