Continuing the Black narrative in our Black Lives Matter miniseries, we continue to showcase and highlight Black voices in our community. This week, I invited Miss Monday Blues to speak on the podcast on how White the burlesque community is, navigating with the autoimmune disease, lupus, and how that's affected her artistry and her wildly successful anti-racist coaching programs. We bring up a topic that is so blatantly obvious, even to outsiders: the Whiteness amongst burlesque dancers. Why is it so White? It's a real bonus episode this time. I was invited to speak at Florida State University (thanks Leash!) to speak on the topic of sex work in the lens of social work, therapy, sex education and therapy. It was a complete honour to have been asked to speak to a group of aspiring and future leaders in order to better understand our industry and profession. It was an incredible opportunity to have a chance to eliminate any stereotypes or misconceptions the audience may have had prior to the class, largely due in part to the media and overall stereotypes about sex workers. I got a chance to speak with fellow off-work-due-to-COVID exotic dancer, Devon, this week. She identifies as an Afro-Indigenous and queer individual and I had the opportunity to catch up with her on the Black Lives Matter movement and Juneteenth. She had attended both of the peaceful and anti-racist rallies in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on June 5th and 19th and was able to contribute to the latter through song. She performed her original song, "I Can't Breathe" at Sunset Beach where the march ended and reflected on her experience performing such a heavy piece in front of thousands. Her employment in the sex industry was physically short, recently celebrating her 1-year anniversary; however, she was able to shift her work online which she is enjoying. I'm always curious to see how sex workers are compensating for loss of revenue during this pandemic. Recently, I was invited to some Like 4 Like (L4L), Share 4 Share (S4S) and Telegram drop groups on Instagram and although I didn't stay long, I wanted to divulge into the topic. Other women I knew that were involved in the groups were Asia and Pocket Phoenix, two past guests here on the podcast (episode 2 and 23, respectively).
