1060: Dreams | Skeptical Sunday

What's really happening when we sleep? Michael Regilio tucks us in and takes us to the alluring world of dreams and their purpose on this Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • Dreams serve important biological functions, including problem-solving, emotional processing, and memory consolidation. Scientists have observed that dreaming can improve task performance and help solve complex problems.
  • Sleep cycles consist of four phases: NREM 1, NREM 2, NREM 3, and REM sleep. REM sleep is when most vivid dreaming occurs, and certain areas of the brain are even more active during this phase than when awake.
  • Common dream themes exist across cultures, such as being chased, being late for an exam, or being naked in public. These may serve evolutionary purposes like threat simulation or primitive instinct rehearsal.
  • Sleep disorders like REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) can be dangerous, as people may physically act out their dreams. Conversely, sleep paralysis prevents most people from acting out dreams but can lead to frightening experiences.
  • Anyone can increase their chances of having lucid dreams — where you're aware you're dreaming and can sometimes control the dream – through simple techniques like regularly asking yourself if you're awake or asleep throughout the day, or setting an intention to have a lucid dream before going to sleep. Practicing these techniques can lead to fascinating dream experiences and potential benefits for problem-solving and creativity.

952: Adam Grant | The Science of Tapping Into Your Hidden Potential

When we lack a sense of natural talent, how can we unlock our ability to excel? Find out on this episode with Hidden Potential author Adam Grant! What We Discuss with Adam Grant: When you're going through the repetitive steps necessary to learn a new skill, how can you turn the daily grind into a source of daily joy? Why learning from an expert mentor is not necessarily the best path to success. What are character skills, and why are they more important than cognitive skills or talent when it comes to succeeding? How did a pair of hyperpolyglots go from repeatedly failing to retain languages to speaking dozens fluently? Why we should seek advice we can act upon rather than feedback that only identifies our cheerleaders and critics. And much more... 950: Emergency Medical Services | Skeptical Sunday

950: Emergency Medical Services | Skeptical Sunday

Why is relying on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) liable to send your bank balance to the morgue? Michael Regilio joins us on Skeptical Sunday to find out!  On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Unlike police and fire departments, emergency medical services (EMS) are not deemed essential across most of the US — which means they're often underfunded and struggling to provide adequate care. Insurance policies commonly omit coverage for EMS-provided ambulance rides, making them cost-prohibitive for the people who often need them the most. Even the EMTs who staff EMS outfits are underpaid and can't usually afford to make use of them without going into the red. Who profits from the status quo of the broken EMS system, and why is it so hard to enact the reforms necessary to have providers declared essential? What can we do to educate and advocate for the overhauls necessary to make EMS viable for everyone? Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. 948: Kashmir Hill | Is Privacy Dead in the Age of Facial Recognition?

Are the benefits of facial recognition technology worth their societal cost? Your Face Belongs to Us author Kashmir Hill weighs the pros and cons here! What We Discuss with Kashmir Hill: What is facial recognition technology, and how does it work? What are the positive use cases for facial recognition technology? How accurate is facial recognition technology, and what happens when it confidently misidentifies someone (or is used unethically by those with access to the keys)? Who is pushing for the proliferation of facial recognition technology, and what do they stand to gain from it? Is there a middle ground between the outright banning of facial recognition technology and completely allowing it to keep tabs on us in a world where privacy is a quaint relic of a bygone era? 946: Michael McQueen | Mastering the Art of Changing Minds

946: Michael McQueen | Mastering the Art of Changing Minds

Is polite persuasion impossible among the presently polarized populace? Mindstuck: Mastering the Art of Changing Minds author Michael McQueen has answers! What We Discuss with Michael McQueen: Despite technological advances that have changed how we communicate, the psychology that dictates our persuasion, decision-making, and thinking remains the same. The effects of rationalizing our existing beliefs and the power of our expectations and perceptions. The importance of not defining ourselves by our opinions. Practical persuasion techniques such as priming and the power of sequence, as well as the effectiveness — and associated dangers — of using fear as a persuasive tool. How an understanding of these concepts can improve our ability to communicate and persuade — even when society seems hopelessly polarized (and doubly so during an election year). And much more... 945: Estranged from Son for What His Sister's Done | Feedback Friday

The ex-wife turned your son against you because you called the cops when her daughter was caught on camera stealing from you. Welcome to Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: The ex-wife manipulated your son against you because you called the cops when her daughter was caught on camera stealing from you. Now he refuses to talk to you. What can you do? Is there a way to accept the job offer two states over that pays $60,000 more than you were making while sharing custody of your 16-year-old daughter who graduates in 18 months? Ever since you were young, networking and building relationships have made you uncomfortable, and you've always felt like you're inconveniencing people by contacting them. You think it may have to do with time spent around a volatile, negative sister during your formative years. How can you overcome this? Dr. Carl Hart claims that drugs like heroin, crack cocaine, and crystal meth can, when used responsibly, enhance a person's life in a variety of ways, such as helping married couples become closer. Well, in spite of losing your mother to heroin six years ago, you thought you might benefit from giving it a try — to disastrous results. While you're currently in recovery, you wanted to share your story with others to spare them from making the same mistake based on this "expert's" advice. Working at a large company, you're sick of watching so many others around you get promoted while you continue to languish in the middle ranks. And ever since failing to pass a grueling interview gauntlet for a leadership position, your morale has been drained. How can you heal this emotional wound?
