This week, we explore the legend of Axe Murder Hollow — the chilling tale of a jealousy crazed, axe-wielding farmer that has passed down through generations in Erie Pennsylvania, and spread through northern Appalachia. What began as a ghost story passed between teens in the 1940s has since become one of the state’s most infamous tales — blending true crime, folklore, hauntings, and ghostly revenge.  We’ll get into the rumors and theories that sprung up about what haunts Axe Murder Hollow. In 1903, the quiet coal town of Van Meter, Iowa was shaken by a terrifying series of sightings that would become one of the strangest cryptid encounters in American folklore. It started with a beam of light — not from the sky, but from a glowing horn attached to a massive, winged creature. Then came the sulfuric stench, the shrieks in the night, and the bullets that didn’t work. For five nights, the townspeople watched in fear as a mysterious beast (or two?) soared through the skies, undeterred by shotgun blasts and town patrols. This is the legend of the Van Meter Visitor, a creature described as part-gargoyle, part-dragon, part-unicorn, and 100% nightmare fuel that the entire town tried — and failed — to take down. Plus, we’ll cover modern-day sightings, a plaster footprint, psychological and paranormal theories, and a festival held each year to commemorate this mysterious visitor. We’re off on a haunted pub crawl through Edinburgh’s Grassmarket — a charming old square with a dark and bloody past. Once home to executions, riots, and witch trials, it’s now a paranormal hotspot packed with ghosts, legends, and cursed bar stools. It’s officially summer, which means travel season — and with it, a whole new batch of haunted experiences. In this week’s Encounters, listeners share their strangest supernatural run-ins while camping, road-tripping, or staying in places that should’ve come with a paranormal warning label. 🛶 Listener Stories Include: A glowing orb and a horrifying gray creature circle a New Mexico campsite in a shared encounter between two terrified campers. The Museum of Shadows in Omaha, Nebraska is home to haunted artifacts, creepy dolls, and some spooky history. The building itself, a former brothel and mortuary, has a storied history including rumored murders and black-market surgeries. It now houses a collection of over 3,000 paranormal objects.  Among the haunted highlights is Ada, a doll known for trying to escape her display and setting off alarms in the middle of the night. Another haunted doll, Claire, can be heard growling in a disturbingly non-human voice (EVPs and video evidence included!). And then there’s the 10-Minute Sit Challenge in the pitch-black basement where the most notoriously demonic objects are stored…most visitors don’t last more than five minutes. Plus, Corinne opens up about her grandmother's recent passing and the profound, synchronistic signs that her spirit might still be checking in.
