Why is The Silmarillion so difficult to read—and what exactly are you getting into when you open it for the first time?

In the very first episode of Talking Tolkien, John and Greta begin their journey through The Silmarillion by exploring the structure of the book, its relationship to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien's explanation of the deeper ideas behind his mythology.

WHY THE SILMARILLION IS HARD

Unlike The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion has an elevated, almost biblical style. Readers encounter unfamiliar names, places, peoples, and histories without a familiar character to guide them.

Talking Tolkien aims to make the book more accessible through a chapter-by-chapter exploration without sacrificing its depth.

HOW THE SILMARILLION CONNECTS TO TOLKIEN'S OTHER WORKS

Tolkien began developing his mythology around the First World War, decades before publishing The Hobbit.

When publishers wanted another Hobbit story rather than his deeper mythology, Tolkien eventually produced The Lord of the Rings, which became a bridge between these worlds.
Elrond provides one of the clearest connections between the familiar stories and the ancient legendarium.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE SILMARILLION

The book contains five major parts:
- The Ainulindalë — The creation of the world through the Music of the Ainur
- The Valaquenta — The great spiritual powers who entered the world
- The Quenta Silmarillion — The main body of First Age mythology
- The Akallabêth — The history and downfall of Númenor
- Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age — The bridge to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

The appendices include genealogies, pronunciation guides, language material, an index, and other reference tools.

WHY THE MAPS CAN BE CONFUSING

Much of The Silmarillion takes place in Beleriand, a region that no longer exists by the Third Age. Readers familiar with the map from The Lord of the Rings may initially find the geography disorienting.

TOLKIEN'S WALDMAN LETTER

The second half of the episode explores Tolkien's long explanatory letter to publisher Milton Waldman.

The letter reveals just how central the mythology was to Tolkien's life. He could not remember a time when he was not developing its languages, legends, and histories.

WHY TOLKIEN CREATED

Drawing connections to Leaf by Niggle, John and Greta consider why human beings feel compelled to make things.

For Tolkien, the artist is a sub-creator, making something meaningful within a reality that ultimately precedes and exceeds him.

FALL, MORTALITY, AND THE MACHINE

Tolkien identifies three major concerns running through his mythology:
- Fall — The corruption that occurs when creators become possessive of their creations
- Mortality — The desire to preserve, possess, and prevent loss
- The Machine — The pursuit of power and control through the imposition of one's will

ART VS. DOMINATION

Tolkien contrasts genuine art, which develops the nature of a thing, with machinery or magic that seeks to dominate it.

This distinction illuminates his concerns about industrialization, mechanized warfare, and the pursuit of power for its own sake.

THE BIG TAKEAWAY

The Silmarillion is difficult because it was never conceived as a conventional modern novel. It represents Tolkien's lifelong effort to create an entire mythology of languages, histories, peoples, and ages.
Understanding its structure makes the book easier to navigate. Understanding its deeper themes—creation, mortality, possession, fall, and domination—reveals why Tolkien devoted so much of his life to it.
