Apt Pupil: The Murder of Richard Carno

Apt Pupil: The Murder of Richard Carno

There’s an old saying that if you’re not where you want to be in your life—or who—you should “fake it til you make it.” And it can work great. For example, let’s say you’re terrified of public speaking. And inside you feel like you’re about to either pee yourself, barf up everything you’ve ever eaten, just turn around and flee, or possibly all three. But instead of letting the audience see your nerves, you straighten your shoulders and stride out to the podium in your best outfit, with a big, fake, confident smile on your face. Chances are, people will never know how scared you were, and you’ll actually start to FEEL confident after a while. But…what if you never get to the “til you make it” part? What if the core of your being is so dark, so abhorrent, so contrary to everything that makes us truly human, that your only option is to fake it, all the time? I bet you’d get real good at it. William Saroyan once wrote, “It takes a lot of rehearsing for a man to be himself.” For the villain in this story, it was just the opposite. The rehearsal was all about hiding the self.
