Ohio State Reformatory Redux

Ohio State Reformatory Redux

The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield was originally meant to help wayward young men get back on the right road. The beautiful Gothic reformatory built of iron and limestone is so picturesque that it was used as a location in the movie, "The Shawshank Redemption." What happened to many of the residents of this building was anything but beautiful, and certainly was not about truly reforming young men. Stories that include torture, beatings and other misdeeds are numerous. And wherever strong emotions are built up, we usually find some kind of unexplained phenomenon. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Ohio State Reformatory!

Ep. 53 - Alcatraz

Ep. 53 - Alcatraz

About 1.5 miles off the shores of San Francisco, California lies a rocky island with the infamous name "Alcatraz." Some of the most notorious criminals in American history were sent to a prison built on the island that bears the same name because of the impossibility of escape. But long before the likes of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert "Birdman" Stroud came to the island affectionately nicknamed "The Rock," the island housed a light house and a military prison. Many desperate souls wiled away their lives on Alcatraz Island and many of those souls seemed to have stayed. Those souls include not only prisoners, but banished Native Americans. Some claim a portal exists on the island. Come with us across the cold waters of the San Francisco Bay as we explore the history and hauntings of Alcatraz. The Moment in Oddity features Dancing Mania and This Day in History features the St. Hilaire Train Disaster.

HGB BonusCast 5

In this fifth BonusCast from History Goes Bump, you will hear a bit about the phenomenon that is the podcast Lore, which is currently taking iTunes by storm, and you will also hear a clip from Diane's co-hosting adventure on The 9th Story Podcast - you know the clip where the haunted music box makes an appearance or rather doesn't, but Diane and Dan are freaked, so something happened! Also, there are some more outtakes from the show, particularly featuring Denise's non-existent giggling - uh huh - and our guest co-host Freya even makes it into the outtakes with both some tongue tied issues and a little behind the scenes peek - or listen - to the pre-show talk. Ep. 50 - The Legend of the Devil's Footprints

Ep. 50 - The Legend of the Devil's Footprints

We love covering urban legends and we have another one for this episode. Urban legends can be as recent as the Charlie, Charlie Game that went viral on the internet a couple of weeks ago or they can reach back into the past. The legend surrounding the Devil's Footprints dates back to 1855. The Devil's Footprints is an unexplained mystery that is one of the strangest stories we have ever heard. The only theory that has really survived the test of time is that the Devil paid a visit to Devon, England and made his way bouncing around roofs and yards and such. After hearing the details, perhaps you will come up with your own theory. Was it the Devil? Did aliens pay a visit? Could these be the tracks of a ghost? The Moment in Oddity features the disappearing island of Lomea and This Day in History features the Stars and Stripes becoming America's official flag.
