The Viral Newborn Rant
In a filmed interview at the Obama Foundation Summit, Barack Obama challenged “call-out culture” telling the audience that criticising something on Twitter isn’t activism. But is calling stuff out sometimes necessary in order to stimulate change? Plus, the NSW government plans to make maths compulsory for years 11 and 12. Is maths really something all of us need to do? And is there a gap in our learning that maths might perfectly fill? And a viral post on Instagram suggested some new rules for visiting a newborn. It turns out, we’ve all been making a lot of mistakes… This episode of Mamamia Out loud is brought to you by Amazon Prime Video RECCOS Jessie- Between Ourselves With Marian Keyes podcast Mia- @buyfromthebush insta follow Holly- That’s Incredible podcast MMOL TOUR DATES Sydney - Seymour Centre Friday 1st November Sydney Overflow Show - Giant Dwarf Theatre Saturday 16th November A Night With Mia Freedman tickets available now at https://www.mamamia.com.au/events/ Subscribe to Mamamia Out Loud here: https://omny.fm/shows/mamamia-out-loud/playlists/podcast END BITS Hosts: Mia Freedman Holly Wainwright and Jessie Stephens Producer: Lem Zakharia COME TALK TO US Join the Out Louders Facebook group GET IN TOUCH Call the PodPhone on 02 8999 9386. In Defense Of The Chaotic Woman
One of Australia’s most infamous serial killers, Ivan Milat, died early Sunday morning in his cell at Long Bay Jail. Then, over the weekend, ISIS leader Abū Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed during a US military operation. There has been a lot of celebration over the last few days about the death of these two men. But is there something a little gross about celebrating when someone dies? Plus, we’re constantly being told to be mindful and zen. Stress and chaos are very out of fashion. But Taffy Brodesser-Akner argues in a recent column that stress is what helps her get things done, and maybe a ‘calm’ and ‘peaceful’ life is overrated. Does she have a point? Also, if you’re in shock that it’s nearly Christmas again, there’s a reason for that. This has been the decade where time was turned on its head, and here’s what that means for the average person. Does Leunig Have A Point?
Well-known cartoonist Michael Leunig’s most recent work shows a young mum glued to her screen as her newborn is cast away on the ground behind her. He’s copped a lot of criticism, but does Leunig have a point when it comes to our relationship with our phones? Plus, boys from a private school were filmed yelling a misogynistic chant on a Melbourne tram this week. What does this tell us about young men? And would the same thing have happened if these boys went to a co-ed school? And a reality TV star has taken a network to court over her ‘psychological wound’, and won. So, who is liable for the so-called “villain edit”? And is this precedent going to change reality television for good? Poor Meghan and Harry
So, it’s been a very big week in royal world. Even Jessie is interested. So why did the Duke and Duchess of Sussex choose now to give quite such an honest interview on their African tour? Why are some commentators so upset about it? And what would a post-royal life look like for Harry and Meghan? Are they the next Obamas? Also, last weekend, a plane full of journalists flew for 20 hours straight from Sydney to New York to see what it does to you. Jessie has questions. What No One Is Saying About ‘The Poo Jogger’
At 6:30 am on October 10th, a jogger was filmed relieving herself outside Roxy Jacenko’s office. Shortly after, Jacenko posted a video that went absolutely viral. So, Mia asks whether this behavior can ever be excused and if yes, under what circumstances? Also, Kyle and his KIIS FM co-host Jackie O, have reportedly signed one of the biggest media deals in Australian history, earning approximately $7-8 million per year. Holly wants to know is anyone who isn’t saving the world worth $40,000 a day? Plus, research has shown that owning a dog can lower your risk of dying early by 24%. Jessie dives deep on why cuddling your little pup can massively enhance your mood and also help you be present in the moment. The Enemy Of Sex
Last week there was a man on The Bachelorette who may have been a new-low in reality TV villains. Yes, we’re talking about Jess Glasgow and the men who stood up to his misogynistic behaviour towards our heroine Angie Kent. This week Mamamia writer and host of the You Beauty podcast Amy Clark wrote a piece titled ‘A stranger sent me an Instagram message about my weight. They were "concerned for my health".’ Amy joins Holly, Mia, and Jessie to talk through the experience, and why people seem to feel like it’s okay to body-shame someone if you say it comes from a place of “concern” for your well-being. You can read Amy’s piece on Mamamia here https://www.mamamia.com.au/i-was-fat-shamed/ Also, does cuddling ruin your sex life. Some researchers say cuddles are the death of more intimate physical touch, while others say the opposite. Help. I Think I Might Be A Thief
Is it okay to take food from the hotel buffet for breakfast, lunch AND dinner? Asking for a friend. Or actually, a listener whose husband thinks she’s a thief. Also. Is Cancel Culture real? Mia read a piece from The New Republic titled The Cancel Culture Con about celebrities coming back from “cancellation” which really riled her up. Because the likes of Taylor Swift, Anziz Ansari and Louis C.K might be back on our screens - or in our ears - but are they really unscathed? Plus, do you love being seen to use your Keep Cup even more than you love using your Keep Cup for the planet? As an avid reusable straw lover, Jessie discusses whether or not her efforts to live a more earth-friendly life are a form of virtue signalling.
