Episode Bonus- Interview with Kasey Rogers: Financial Abuse

Episode Bonus interview with Kasey Rogers Financial Abuse.

This episode unpacks financial abuse. Financial abuse is the biggest source of why people find it hard to escape their abusers. Abusive relationships have different components. According to Learn more about Financial Abuse (nnedv.org) "Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship. The forms of financial abuse may be subtle or overt but in general, include tactics to conceal information, limit the victim's access to assets, or reduce accessibility to the family finances. Financial abuse – along with emotional, physical, and sexual abuse – includes behaviors to intentionally manipulate, intimidate, and threaten the victim to entrap that person in the relationship. In some cases, financial abuse is present throughout the relationship and in other cases financial abuse becomes present when the survivor is attempting to leave or has left the relationship." The textbook definition of financial abuse is defined according to nnedv.org as a form of psychological abuse to control others with the deadly effects to keep you under control. Money is a form of control; a method abusers know are there to isolate victims from reaching out to family to further seek asylum. The gaslighting is another form of making a victim feel mentally sedated. Your mind will never reconcile that you are developing unhealthy attachments to your abuser. The art of conning in financial abuse or any other form is to have your mind believe you are the main orchestrator of your demise. You are lead as the victim to believe you are at fault. I and Kasey unpacked what financial abuse looked like. Kasey was married when her husband subjected her to financial and verbal abuse. Kasey had a lucrative job, one that came with a 6-figure income. Kasey was going through changes of life like motherhood. When Kasey became a mother to twins her husband started to show deceptive behaviors when her paycheck had to be downsized. Kasey is now faced with a dwindling career and the arrival of a set of twins. Kasey's husband used methods to castigate her for choosing motherhood. He was willing for her to get any job despite her trailblazing career. Kasey and I got very candid with the rights of women, gender inequality, financial inequality of women, Roe Vs Wade, and many issues in a country that was founded on a system of patriarchy. This episode is not an attack against men but against the powers to be. Kasey Rogers is Author of a memoir about the devastating impact of financial abuse. The memoir shares my story and how after leaving a career in commercial film to raise my twins, my sense of self eroded over time when my husband began taking complete control. As I made plans to leave my 24-year marriage, my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4B Esophageal cancer and a broken neck. The memoir details the experience and provides insight on the link between domestic and financial abuse. Kasey authored the Color of Frost" Nina DeMarco never felt like she really belonged—anywhere. Then she met and married the charming Richard King. Together, they built a life full of hope for the future. Nina believed she'd finally found the security she had always longed for. But when Richard announces he is divorcing her. She is unsure how she will survive. A distraught Nina begins to wonder if the struggle is even worth it. One day she unexpectedly discovers shoeboxes full of old letters in the attic crawl space of her tiny new apartment. Nina becomes determined to find the woman who wrote them. As she unravels one mystery, she uncovers others. Along the way she encounters new friends who help her piece her life back together. About Kasey: My expertise comes from my passion for helping others learn about the issue of financial abuse and how it is connected to domestic abuse. I am in pre-production for a documentary called, I Know Why She Stayed. The issue of financial abuse gets little attention, but it is one of the major reasons women cannot leave toxic relationships. I have studied this matter and can address the many nuanced issues on this matter. Thank You Kasey for sharing your experience with us on the podcast.
