Sushmeetha Bubna- An Inspiring story of a visually impaired woman who broke barriers

Helen Keller once said "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."

Defying the odds of being legally blind and having the vision and foresight to see beyond her impediments is one such woman. Sushmeetha Bubna, from Mumbai India, was born with a cataract which was detected at a tender age of 5. The cataract was successfully operated at the age of 7, but complications of the surgery, led to a hemorrhage with retinal detachment and loss of vision in the right eye completely. A year and a half later, at 13, she was affected with the retinal detachment in the left eye as well which led her to be legally blind at the age of 24. However, this didn’t deter her resolve to study and she completed her education and graduated in commerce and a post graduate degree in management she is a full-time director of a technology providing in-depth love for exploring new assistive technology, stemmed with a vision of creating a difference in the lives of others’. She wanted to learn to use the computer but was denied admission in one of the leading computer training institutes. Thereafter she found no institute, who could train a visually impaired person. So, although people warned her that this feat would be impossible, she broke barriers and went on to open her own computer institute for the visually challenged community. On April 3rd, 2000 she held the first class of her institute “Voice Vision”. She has initiated several projects for the visually impaired, like a matrimonial online and offline platform for the visually impaired, to meet and find their soulmates, FAIYDA- an exclusive online platform connecting disabled artisans to sell their products and services thereby giving them a purpose in their lives and financial independency.

Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, she has been recognized with several awards:

Dr. Batra’s Positive Health Award, ICICI Banks Fund your own worth Award, Neelam Khursheed Kanga Memorial Award, National Award for the best accessible website, Nawalgarh Nagrik Sangh Award & Rex Karamveer Global Fellowship Honour

We at Lifedcoded salute this incredible lady and promote her cause. If you would like to support her or any of her initiatives, you can reach her at info@lifedcoded.com OR through her various social media handles:
