The Lost Souls of Presque Isle - Travel Special!

We've made it to our first travel episode of the season! We're looking at the dark history of two of Presque Isle's most popular spots - Misery Bay and Graveyard Pond. Presque Isle itself was an important part of the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. These two locations, though, saw some exceptional tragedy. Expecting an attack by the British coming from Buffalo, Erie's forces were stocked on two ships in Misery Bay. The attack never came but the crew suffered from an outbreak of small pox. With the dead quickly piling up, the commanding officer made decision to dump the bodies in Little Bay and the nearby pond. The sickness didn't stop spreading, so to save the rest of his healthy men, he ordered any sick soldiers to be dumped and drowned in the pond. These hardships and tragedies would lead to the nicknames Misery Bay and Graveyard Pond being given to the areas. These names have stood the test of time as people continue to frequent the area for fishing and other activities. However, legend says if you stay past sunset you'll see the ghosts of these lost soldiers emerge from the water and patrol the area until sunrise.
