A Fine Musician's Life w/ Eric Clark & Hannah Reimann

In this episode of Piano Tech Radio Hour, we are pleased to introduce Eric Clark and Hannah Reimann, two highly acclaimed pianists renowned for their masterful interpretations of various classical composers, including Stravinsky, Liszt, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky. Eric and Hannah share insights into their musical journeys, offering a comprehensive look at their paths to establishing their musical voices.

Eric Clark discusses his musical journey from his teenage years in rock bands to his classical studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Influenced by his esteemed mentor, Enrique Graf, Eric transitioned from a double major in chemistry and piano to focusing solely on music. He also reflects on his time studying with the legendary Byron Janis, emphasizing the importance of singing in piano playing. Throughout the episode, Eric's performances showcase his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft.

Hannah Reimann brings her own unique experiences to the conversation. She has performed extensively across various prestigious venues and has a profound connection to the world of classical music. She shares her insights on live performances, influential teachers, and the importance of cultural engagement in experiencing classical music.

Eric's performances of complex and emotionally rich pieces, such as Chopin's Scherzo No. 3 in C Minor and Mendelssohn's "Duetto," are shared with listeners. These performances spark a discussion about the complexity and emotional depth of the music, as well as the lyrical quality that Eric brings to each piece through his technique and interpretation.

Eric also shares personal stories, including the restoration of his great-grandfather's Steinway piano and his connection to recording engineer Joe Patrich, to whom he pays tribute through his performances. These anecdotes offer a glimpse into the personal and historical influences that have shaped his musical journey.

The episode explores Eric’s methods of discovering new repertoire through competitions, festivals, and teachers. Hannah complements this by sharing her own experiences with discovering new music and the impact of live concerts and mentorship on her career. They both encourage listeners to explore live classical music and engage culturally by experiencing real-life performances.

About Eric Clark:

Eric Clark is an American pianist who has achieved international recognition and acclaim. He was invited to compete in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013, and was the only American contestant to attend the First International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw, Poland in 2018. Eric performs regularly at prestigious venues throughout New York City and Europe, has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras, and is an avid performer in chamber ensembles and in jazz ensembles. He regularly transcribes pieces for his own performance as well as commissioning new music, such as a solo piano work by a fellow Carnegie Mellon University entitled “Le Mat- XXII Arcana”: a cycle of twenty-two pieces based on the twenty-two “major arcana” of the tarot. In addition to his work as a performer and private teacher, Eric is also an accomplished visual artist, whose drawings and paintings have won awards at New Jersey arts festivals.
