Episode 29: Changing Social Media Habits With Kate Rowe

Social media can be a fantastic tool to keep up with friends and family. But it also can suck the life out of you if you're not careful.

The Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma" has really helped to shine a spotlight on the dangers of social media usage. I think in the back of our minds we all knew that it wasn't helping us to be happy, but listening to the experts talk about the dangers of social media addiction really brought the point home.

I wanted to talk to someone about social media, but not just one of the talking heads. I wanted to talk to someone that's been in the trenches since the beginning. The first name that came to mind is my friend Kate Rowe, otherwise known as @katekatebear.

Kate has been a social media force in Baltimore as far back as I can remember. While most people were still trying to figure out how to correctly pronounce the word 'Twitter', Kate was organizing tweet ups with likeminded people, and promoting local businesses. In my mind, she was an early version of what we now know as an 'influencer.'

But using social media hasn't always been a positive for Kate. She has seen great success professionally through her work, and she even met her husband via Twitter. But it's taken a deep toll on her energy and happiness.

In this episode of Be More Well we talk about the highs and lows of heavy social media usage. And we dive into what she has done to change things up and take back control of her happiness.
