"The Bible condemns homosexuality" is a statement that has demonized, ruined and in some cases, destroyed LGBTQ people for decades.  Opening modern translations of the Bible seem to confirm that statement... there is the word "homosexual" ... and its context is not good.  But. What if the use of the word was due to a translation mistake?   A new team of filmmakers have undercovered proof that it in fact WAS a mistake.   Their upcoming feature length documentary is called 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture. The documentary is a game changer as it exposes a transformational historical finding from the year 1946, which is the year when the word “homosexual” was mistakenly first introduced in the Bible, due to a mistranslation. This mistranslation would go on to shape theology, history, culture, and politics. 1946 sheds a light on how the misuse of the word “homosexual” has led to elevated condemnation of the LGBTQIA+ community, negative social stigma, and discriminatory legislation. The film features an original score by GRAMMY NOMINEE Mary Lambert (featured on Macklemore’s 2014 hit "Same Love"). Director SHARON "ROCKY" ROGGIO is with us today!  She is the lesbian daughter of an unaffirming pastor and frames her experiences from a unique lens as she works to continue to humanize members of the LGBTQ+ community in the eyes of the public. Today, the Supreme Court , in a unanamous decision, ruled that Philadelphia may not reject a Catholic organization that refused to work with same-sex couples from screening potential foster parents. We will discuss that ruling with our guests, Stephen M. Engel and Timothy S. Lyle.  We will also be talking about their new book DISRUPTING DIGNITY: Rethinking Power and Progress in LGBTQ Lives (NYU Press, June 2021). In the book, they explore how dignity is deployed by different authorities in different ways—and often brandished to marginalize, restrain, and shame members of LGBTQ+ communities. DISRUPTING DIGNITY explores the concept of Respect versus Respectability, with attention to how the chase for dignity has severed LGBTQ+ communities from the potential of liberated worldmaking.   Stephen is Professor of Politics and an Affiliated Scholar of the American Bar Foundation. He teaches courses in US constitutional law, American Political Development, and LGBTQ+ politics. He is the author of multiple books including Fragmented Citizens: The Changing Landscape of Gay and Lesbian Lives and American Politicians Confront the Courts: Opposition Politics and Changing Responses to Judicial Power.  Timothy (they/them) is an Assistant Professor of English. They specialize in contemporary African American literature and culture, focusing on the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and disability. They have published work on Tyler Perry in Callaloo and Continuum, on Janet Mock in the College Language Association Journal, Callaloo, and MELUS, and on HIV/AIDS narratives in African American Review and The Journal of West Indian Literature. With co-host Brody Levesque.

You may know Brandon Kyle Goodman as a powerful social justice advocate from their podcasts and instrgram productions.  Or you may know them from their acting and writing work on some of Netflix's most successful series including "Big Mouth" or the film "Feel the Beat". Today we talk to Brandon about their one-person stage production "The Latrell Show" with the IAMA Theater Company. The show is billed as a "dark comedy" that explores the mental aerobics of being Black and Queer in America by way of its title character, Latrell Jackson. For black and queer audience members, the show will make them feel seen, validated and heard.  For white and non-black audience members, it is an exceptional tour into the mind of a black queer person and brings all the feelings to the forefront for them to encounter-- maybe for the first time. Once upon a time there was a boy who sang Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" for a talent show.  The video of the boy went mega viral, and he found himself in the national spotlight, on the Ellen show, and with a recording contract.  Then it came crashing down. That was then.  This is now.  Greyson Chance, a proud out singer-songwriter, a fully actualized man and artist, has emerged on the scene.  His voice is exceptional, his music intriguing, exciting and deep.  Following his critically acclaimed album "Portraits", Greyson steps out, post-pandemic with his new song, "Hellboy".
