LALONDE FIRED, MCLELLAN HIRED, AND SANDIN PELLIKKA'S HAT TRICK (EMERGENCY EPISODE) - Dec. 26th, 2024

DEREK LALONDE HAS BEEN FIRED BY THE DETROIT RED WINGS.

So much for the holiday break - tune into this EMERGENCY EPISODE of the Winged Wheel Podcast as we discuss Derek Lalonde and Bob Boughner being relieved of their duties by Steve Yzerman in Hockeytown, and Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney being hired to replace them.

We open by discussing Newsy's firing, how the team performed under him, how Dylan Larkin's comments & poor performances by the team (outside of the like of Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, & Alex DeBrincat) affected his coaching tenure, if he deserved to be fired, & how much of the season was his fault (2:50).

Next, a look at Todd McLellan as a coach, his history with McDavid's Oilers and Kopitar's Kings, what type of system he plays, how much he can get out of the likes of Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, Vladimir Tarasenko, Marco Kasper, Jonatan Berggren, & others, whether Yzerman wanted Jim Montgomery, Gerrard Gallant, or Joel Quenneville, & what can realistically be expected of this season (still tanking for Hagens, Misa, Martone, Schaefer, etc.?) (11:55).

After that, what Steve Yzerman has to do next to fix the roster (and when): a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for Dylan Cozens or Bowen Byram? Zegras from the Ducks? (32:40)

Finally, Axel Sandin Pellikka kicks off the World Junior Championship by storm with a hat trick, scoring 3 goals and an assist for Team Sweden as the Detroit Red Wings prospect lights it up (as Augustine struggles a bit against Germany) (48:05).

All of that and LOTS more before we take your questions & comments in our Overtime segment (53:20) - enjoy!
