The Dallas Stars prospect Logan Stankoven is having an incredible season with the Texas Stars in the AHL this season. As a rookie, Stankoven leads the league with 51 points in 41 games this season and just competed in the All-Stars Game last weekend. Via JD Young, another Locked On NHL host, took some videos of a media scrum with Stankoven where he talked about his path to the NHL and his success in his first season in Texas. The Dallas Stars penalty kill gives up three goals for the second time this season as they fall 5-4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Today's episode of Locked On Stars revolves around a pk that has fallen since the new year. Since Jan. 1st the Stars have a 74% penalty kill percentage which is the 26th worst in the NHL and have given up eight goals in last 13 chances. Joey states they can fix it if they want to. Miro Heiskanen is a world class talent and he needs to start killing penalties. If not, then Thomas Harley needs to, no more exclusive pk work from Esa Lindell and Jani Hakanpaa. At one point they were one of the best units in hockey, but now it's not and they can fix it by playing their best players in those situations. Next up is the underwhelming play on the blue line. Last night's game answered the question if you need another defensemen? The Stars gave up three power play goals, had a backup goalie in net and still almost won the game. Jake Oettinger makes a career high 47 saves as he dazzles in Buffalo to shutdown the Sabres. The Dallas Stars hung on for a 2-1 victory after an onslaught from the Sabres thanks to the heroics of Oettinger. It was his best start of the season and great to see him be in a groove. His rebound control was great and had to work hard because the Stars we're not great in front of him. Joey states how important it is to see that Otter can have performances like this, yes he needs to be more consistent, but when he's on his game he's one of the best net-minders in the NHL. Matt Duchene scored on the power play to start the scoring and Sam Steel got the other, but the Stars could not find the insurance goal late. In a special teams 3rd period, Dallas had a couple of 2 man advantages and failed to come through. The power play was 1-for-5 and needs a find a way to pull through and close out games. Buffalo doubled up the Stars in shots in the first period and even more in 2nd as the Stars took a while to get their legs back from nine days off. Now the Stars return to action against a dangerous Toronto Maple Leafs team that has Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. The Dallas Stars come out of the All-Star break on the road against the Buffalo Sabres tonight. However, General Manager Jim Nill did a Q&A with Mike Heika and he spoke about the trade deadline and more. He was asked about how aggressive the Stars might be and if he believes the need another defensemen. Joey for the most part agrees with the answers Nill gave and understands he will not be 100% transparent about their plans because at the end of the day it's about leverage to make deals. The more concerning answer was that the next month will determine if the Stars need a defender. The last four months should determine that the Stars need one, not the next month. Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley can only do so much and with them playing together, that can leave holes in other pairings. It's very clear where the Stars struggle and need to address issues to make it to a Stanley Cup Final. Something Dallas does not struggle with is offense. The second segment documents the Stars incredible offense this season, but they do not generate many power plays because of it. For a team that maintains possession and spends a lot of time generating chances and scoring the majority of the them, Dallas is fourth to last in power play opportunities this season. It's hard to give a clear cut answer why, but if the Stars can do more to get more power plays, it adds another layer of an already lethal offense. The final segment we preview tonight's game with the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo did not make the next step many thought they would and find themselves 6th in the Atlantic Division. The Dallas Stars return from All-Star break and face the Buffalo Sabers tomorrow night. Jake Oettinger returns as the lone representative for the Stars this season and also returns on the winning team, Team Matthews! Oettinger also stopped 8 out of 10 shots in the Skills Competition against Eilias Pettersson. Joey begins the episode taking a look into Otter's change in routine after having ankle surgery in July. He's had to practice less on the ice and do more off the ice like video work. Joey thinks this may has led to some of his inconsistencies in his play this season and once it becomes more comfortable his play and numbers will return to what we've seen in previous seasons. The 2nd segment is a preview of the February schedule for the Dallas Stars. The Stars play a total of 13 games against nine teams in the playoff picture and three back to backs. They take on top teams such as Carolina twice, Boston, New York and two division opponents in Colorado and Winnipeg. This will be a very important stretch for the Stars who want to win the Central Division and a trade deadline that looms in a month. The All-Star break came at a good time for the Stars, but they have to beat quality opponents to keep pace in with the Avalanche and Jets. The show wraps up discussing the NHL's plans to have a Four Nations in season tournament in 2025 consisting of Canada, United States, Sweden and Finland plus having NHL players compete in the World Cup and returning to the Olympics. Matt Duchene is having a phenomenal season with the Dallas Stars and is one of the best values in the entire NHL. Having 45 points in 48 games at 33 years old is going to catch the attention of teams for the pending Free Agent after the season. Joey gives what his "pitch" would be to keep Duchene and how the 1,000 game celebration last Saturday can go a long way for someone that has three young kids and looking for something more stable at this point in his career. The Stars are not only ready to win now, but in the future and he is not required to carry the heavy load of being the "guy" on the team. Of course you want him to stay, but the Stars are going to have to pay Thomas Harley, Sam Steel of Ty Dellandrea. The Stars may have to move off of one or two in order to get a deal done with Duchene, or is he willing to take less like he did this past offseason to remain in Dallas. Time will tell, but his impact has already been immense. The next segment, we look at the Western Conference playoff series if the season ended today. The Stars are the two seed in the Central Division and would host the Winnipeg Jets in the first round. The final segment takes a look at The Athletics Power Rankings right before the All-Star break. The Stars return to number five after being out for a few weeks.
