Are the Dancing Fairies of Northumbria Benign or Malevolent?
Tales of fairies exist all over the world, and there are hundreds to choose from right here in the British Isles. Yet they often have a particular 'flavour' or motif that lets you group them together. One of the common motifs of folk tales in the northeast of England is that of dancing fairies. It seems the fairies in these parts loved a good feast, or a sing-song after dark. Many of the stories are benign, with fairies simply enjoying a good knees-up and largely leaving human witnesses alone. Others see the fairies try to invite humans to join them - many of whom are never seen again. We'll explore some tales of Northumbrian fairies, including hunters that disappear into Fairyland, fairy hills, and a milkmaid with the power to see fairies in this week’s episode of Fabulous Folklore! Folklore of Daisies: Love Divination and Daisy Chains
Daisies are a familiar sight at this time of the year in the UK, popping up in lawns and on grass verges. Their proliferation, particularly on lawns, makes them an unwanted plant for some gardeners. The flowers, or Bellis perennis, are also known as bairnwort, bruisewort, common daisy, English daisy, garden daisy, and wild daisy. Yet they're more often associated with love, childhood, and divination! Let's look at the folklore behind daisy chains, pulling petals, and trampling on daisies in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore!
