On May 21st, 2024, in Acadia National Park, Spencer became the first person to complete a trip to all the national parks in the lower forty-eight states…by bicycle. It took 13 months, 18,000 miles, and a whopping 28 flat tires.In preparation for this bicycle trip, Spencer moved into a van, cut the expenses of his life down to save money so he could take this time off. This bike trip was only the beginning of a larger advocacy project. Spencer’s goal is to make sure that if you hike or bike into a federallymanaged campground, there will always be a cheap place for you to stay. This will provide the necessary support for people who are recreating without a car and offer an incentive to others to leave their car at home.When not on the move, Spencer is heavily involved in community organizing and advocacy work. Denise Joi is the first and only female pilot hired by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and has been a full time Wildlife/Natural Resource pilot for 9 years. Before this she flew summers in Alaska for Denali and St. Elias National Parks. She is an ATP MEI rated pilot holding a Bachelor of Science in Aviation. She’s volunteered and flown with nonprofit organizations overseas in Central America and Africa, spending a season coordinating flights in Antarctica. Originally published October 19, 2020After growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Bernadette got the taste of mountain living on a family trip to Banff, Alberta. She was so awestruck by the Canadian Rockies that she eventually moved there and worked at the Banff Centre, directing the Banff Mountain Festivals and starting a new division – Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre. After 20 years of volunteering at the Banff Film Festival, she began getting involved in book projects through the Centre and eventually starting writing books about mountaineering history. Today’s episode features a discussion about Bearnadette’s latest book, Winter 8000: Climbing the World’s Highest Mountains in the Coldest Season.
