Gun Violence: Newtown Speaks to America on How We Respond

Guests tonight include Newtown, CT resident and former Sheriff Deputy Darren Wagner, Edward Crowell of Iowa City, IA, Erin Combs of Norwalk, CT, and Kathleen Marinelli, MD of Hartford, CT. Annabel Park & Eric Byler interviewed Darren, Kathleen, and Erin today at a protest in front of the Walmart in Danbury, CT — just a few miles from Newtown — to deliver 300,000 signatures asking the retail giant to stop selling semi-automatic weapons. Edward is one of the most articulate contributors to Annabel's recent blog responding to her gun-rights friends. What are the statistical odds that you, or someone you love, will be killed in the next American gun massacre? What do you think will that decrease those odds? Should we be thinking about gun tragedies in terms of our own statistical chances ONLY? Or is there a broader concern in this nation of 330 million people, where reducing the frequency and the deadliness of gun violence may not impact our lives directly, but would impact the lives of tens of thousands of our fellow citizens who would be spared life-shattering tragedy. It's the law of probability. In a world where the next victim probably won't be you, can you be brought to care enough about this issue to stand up to powerful lobbiests and fanatical activists who want no new laws and no enforcement of the laws we have? Are we are all in this together? Or, have we become the nation where we question the citizenship of the president, and/or petition to renounce our own, just because we don't like the outcome of a peaceful and democratic election?
