It was Christmas morning, and I was so excited to see what Santa had left for me under the tree. But as I raced down the hallway, I stopped short when I saw that my mum was still sleeping on the couch. She had been sick with cancer for a few months, and I knew that Christmas was going to be different this year. Christmas spent as a kid whose mum has a deadly illness can change the landscape of the holiday, but it can also bestow some of the fondest memories of what that time of year truly means…this is a story of when I learned that lesson wholly.
