On April 15, 1975, Melanie "Suzy" Cooley left Nederland High School where she was a senior. She was last seen hitchhiking in Nederland. A road maintenance worker found her body on May 2, 1975, in Coal Creek Canyon. Cooley was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue jean jacket with an embroidered eagle on the back and tan-colored boots. She had been hit over the head repeatedly with a large rock. On December 30, 2021, a fire in Boulder County fueled by hurricane force winds destroyed more than 1,000 homes and the investigation is underway. Coincidentally, I found myself in the middle of the fire, that will forever be remembered as the Marshall Fire, with my buddy Rob. All we were doing was trying retrieve his truck from Park and Ride in Superior and somehow ended up in an historic wildfire. Authorities are now investigating the cause since the electric company has said they didn't lose any power lines in the high winds. Some investigators say they know the point of origin. We were lucky to have fast acting authorities who rerouted traffic and I am confident they saved many lives. This episode is our experience with the fire. Statement on the 25th Anniversary of the JonBenet Ramsey Murder As of December 2021, the Boulder Police Department has processed more than 1,500 pieces of evidence related to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. JonBenet was 6 years old when she was reported missing on Dec. 26, 1996, after her family reported finding a ransom note inside their home in the 700 block of 15th Street. Her body was found in a basement room, and a later autopsy revealed that the cause of her death was strangulation. As of December 2021, that evidence has included the analysis of nearly 1,000 DNA samples. The BPD Major Crimes Unit has received, reviewed or investigated more than 21,016 tips, letters and emails and detectives have traveled to 19 states to interview or speak with more than 1,000 individuals in connection to this crime. Thanks to the huge advances in DNA technology, multiple suspects have been run through the system to check for matches. CBI has updated over 750 reference samples with the latest DNA technology. The Boulder Police Department works closely with CBI on future DNA advancements. Additionally, Boulder Police have worked with CBI to ensure the DNA in the system can be compared correctly to new DNA samples that have been uploaded to ensure accuracy. That DNA is checked regularly for any new matches. As the Department continues to use new technology to enhance the investigation, it is actively reviewing genetic DNA testing processes to see if those can be applied to this case moving forward. Nic from the True Crime Garage Podcast joins me this week to make heads and tails of the new information out of Delphi. We work through the police statement and what it all means. While we both agree this is a significant move in the investigation but we do our best not to speculate. Again, this case will be solved by someone who knows something. The Delphi Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff, the Indiana State Police, and the FBI are asking for your assistance in identifying the suspect in the double homicide of two teenage girls, Abigail J. "Abby" Williams, 13, and Liberty Rose Lynn "Libby" German, 14, both from Delphi. In Monday’s press conference, authorities turned to the public in hopes of gleaning more information about the phony profile creator, known as a catfish, who went by the name “anthony_shots” on social media between 2016 and 2017. Police released photos of a male model used by the suspect, emphasizing that they were in contact with the model, who is not a person of interest in their investigation. “The fictitious anthony_shots profile used images of a known male model and portrayed himself as being extremely wealthy and owning numerous sports cars,” said Public Information Officer Sgt. Jeremy Piers. “The creator of the fictitious profile used this information while communicating with juvenile females to solicit nude images, obtain their addresses, and attempt to meet them.” On Monday, February 13th, 2017, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the two young girls were let off near the Monon High Bridge, an abandoned rail bridge over Deer Creek to walk around and hang out. They were to be picked up later in the afternoon, but did not show up there at the previously arranged time. Following an extensive search, at approximately 12:15 p.m. on February 14, 2017, the bodies of the two girls were found in a wooded area near the Delphi Historic Trail, approximately one-half mile upstream from the bridge.
