Dr Carrie Jones: Keto For Women, Dealing w/ Heavy Periods, How to Increase Morning Energy: KKP 78

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 78 with Dr. Carrie Jones Today, I am lucky to have here with me, Dr. Carrie Jones, a functional medicine women's health and hormone doctor. Dr. Carrie Jones believes in the importance of both men and women understanding their hormones in a simplified manner so they can feel more empowered to take control of their health, especially when they are told everything is "normal." Still, they don't feel "normal." Dr. Carrie is a Naturopathic Physician with a Master's in Public Health, having over 12 years in the field of functional and integrative medicine. As Adjunct Faculty for the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), she has taught courses in both Gynecology and Advanced Endocrinology. Dr. Carrie has been the Medical Director for two large integrative clinics in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Carrie is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the most cutting edge hormone test on the market, the DUTCH Test. As a result, Dr. Carrie consults with the most fantastic health care practitioners all over the world on the hormone status of their patients, and lecture/teach/frequently write on the same topic. Understanding adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormones are complicated. Dr. Carrie's job is not to judge. Her job is to educate and empower. In this episode, Dr. Carrie Jones speaks about common women's health issues. Lack of energy is a common complaint which could be due to a variety of issues. It is essential to get morning sunlight to combat the lack of energy. If you do not have access to sunlight, Dr. Carrie says to get a full-spectrum light. Then, Carrie explains the importance of healthy fats on our hormones. If women are not eating healthy fats, they stop ovulating, their skin breaks out, and their hair is in poor health. Later, Dr. Carrie advises on how to prevent constipation and heavy periods. [00:45] About Dr. Carrie Jones Carrie always knew she wanted to get into the healthcare industry. In Portland, Dr. Carrie found naturopathic medicine. She learned all the naturopathic principles, diet, lifestyle, sleep, and risk-factor mitigation. Carrie uses a lot of herbal medication, essential oils, and acupuncture. She does not put herself in any specific box. There are a time and a place for surgery and antibiotics. [05:25] The Most Common Problem With Women’s Health There are metabolic and hormonal problems. Most women’s issues will fall into one of these two categories. A majority of women complain about their energy. Dr. Carrie says there is a lot of reasons for low energy. It can be cortisol, B12, thyroid, poor sleep, etc. Dr. Carrie does a series of tests to determine what could be causing low energy. [07:50] The Importance of Morning Sunlight Morning sunlight is light and day difference. Open your curtains. The sunshine in your eyes will wake up your brain. You have twenty to thirty minutes when you switch from unconscious to alertness. If you have overcast, it’s still okay. If it’s dark when you wake up, you will need a full-spectrum light. It will give you the sensation of being outside. Turn it on for ten minutes to a few hours. You want it within eye view – don’t just set it on the counter and walk away. When you are getting ready, set it on the bathroom counter. [15:15] Teas for Adrenal Health and Morning Energy Licorice blends and other supportive herbs. Detox teas are typically a joke. However, many detox teas have nutritive and supportive supplements. Every morning, Dr. Carries drinks green tea. Jasmine green tea is her favorite. Midmorning, Dr. Carrie drinks macha tea. [17:00] The Role Healthy Fats Play With Our Hormones Cholesterol is the backbone of all our healthy hormones. If you don’t eat fat, a lot of things can happen to your body: You won’t ovulate, so you can’t get pregnant. Your skin will break out. Your hair will be too greasy or too dry. Fat will make hormones and increase cellular health. Athletes will often not have their periods. However, it is completely destroying their hormones. Which will also make it tough on the brain, skin, and hormones. [21:35] Dr. Carrie’s Favorite Fats and Least Favorite Fats Carrie responds well to olive-oil, avocados, and fish oil. Bad fats are things like fried foods. Eating a basket of fries will not make you feel healthy. Avoid industrial seed oils. Do the best you can and take baby steps. [25:00] About DUTCH (Dried Urine Test For Comprehensive Hormones) It’s a test in which you need to urinate on paper four or times a day. The test is handy because it will alter depending on your circadian rhythm. It will test your hormones and where your hormones are going. Our hormones have to go somewhere. We can be proactive when we learn our results from this test. [31:40] Preventing Constipation Hydration is huge. Most people are underhydrated. Diet is also essential. We lack in fiber. Eat fiber and vegetables to move your stool. Everything can be done through diet and lifestyle changes. Get good sleep. When we are not sleeping well, we do not wake up repaired, and it slows our systems down. [36:10] Eating the Keto Diet Without Restricting Hormones Hormones will tank out if women strictly eat keto. Women might not be doing the diet correctly. However, doing 100% keto will affect some women. Seven days before the cycle, progesterone should be the highest. People will need flexibility with the diet whose hormones are out of whack. [41:50] Preventing Heavy Periods Heavy periods can happen because of low progesterone, iron deficiency, or low thyroid. A lot of women are not in tune with their cycle. Some women don’t know if they are releasing eggs. When we have enough progesterone, our bleeding is easy and straightforward. Some women have too much estrogen. This will result in heavy periods and lots of clots. Find out if you ovulate. Track temperatures and look at symptoms. If you want to ovulate, you need B vitamins. [47:00] Post-Menopausal Women Once the ovaries are done, estrogen and progesterone get low. Be diligent about your stress response, self-care, and sleep cycle. Women will need to be more diligent post-menopause. If you have always had the same kind of diet, start changing up your diet. AND MUCH MORE! #910 The 5 Worst Cardio Mistakes That Sabotage Fat Loss with Ben Azadi

#910 The 5 Worst Cardio Mistakes That Sabotage Fat Loss with Ben Azadi

Does cardio actually help with fat loss? Yes! If you don’t make these 5 mistakes that sabotage fat loss. If done right, you can use cardio to melt belly fat. Let’s start with the first mistake… #1 Overdoing Steady-State Cardio Why it's a mistake: Spending too much time doing long, slow cardio (like jogging) can lead to a plateau, increased cortisol levels, and even muscle loss. While steady-state cardio can improve endurance, it’s not the most efficient way to burn fat or build cardiovascular health. Fix: Incorporate high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or alternate between steady-state and resistance-based cardio. #2 Ignoring Strength Training Why it's a mistake: Many people rely solely on cardio for fat loss, neglecting the benefits of muscle-building exercises. Without strength training, you miss out on the metabolic boost and long-term calorie burn that comes from increasing muscle mass. Fix: Combine cardio with resistance training to maximize fat loss and metabolic health. #3 Doing Too Much, Not Recovering Enough Why it's a mistake: Jumping into intense cardio routines without building a foundation can lead to burnout, overtraining, or injuries. Fix: Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your cardio sessions to allow your body to adapt and recover. Track sleep, HRV and resting heart rate Discuss hormesis #4 Neglecting Nutrition  Why it's a mistake: People often overestimate how many calories they burn during cardio and underestimate how important recovery is. Overeating after a cardio session can offset fat-loss efforts, while inadequate recovery can lead to fatigue and reduced performance. Fix: Focus on balanced nutrition (high-quality protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs) and prioritize rest, hydration, and sleep. #5 Doing the Same Routine Repeatedly Why it's a mistake: Repeating the same cardio workout leads to diminished returns as your body adapts to the routine. This makes it less effective over time. Fix: Vary your cardio by mixing different types of exercises (cycling, rowing, running) and intensities to challenge your body and keep it progressing. 📍Resources Mentioned:  🥑 Fat burning keto recipes delivered to your inbox. #908 "We Got Cholesterol Wrong!" - REAL Causes Of Heart Attacks Revealed with Dr. John Kim

#908 "We Got Cholesterol Wrong!" - REAL Causes Of Heart Attacks Revealed with Dr. John Kim

Today, I am blessed to host a conversation with Dr. John Kim, a functional medicine pharmacist. Dr. Kim shares his personal story of suffering a heart attack at 33 despite normal cholesterol levels, revealing the deeper causes like mold toxicity and environmental toxins. We discuss the significant impact of mold on health, chronic inflammation, and stress. Dr. Kim provides practical advice on addressing mold exposure, improving metabolic health through diet, and managing stress with heart rate variability and breathwork. This episode empowers listeners to take proactive steps towards better health and well-being. Ben Azadi kicks off the episode by emphasizing the significance of metabolism and how it transforms food into energy, which is essential for overall well-being. He highlights the podcast's mission to provide listeners with insights from thought leaders in the field, aiming to empower them to enhance their metabolic health. The discussion covers various subjects, including biohacking, fasting strategies, and the importance of a self-healing body. Dr. Kim shares his compelling story of suffering a heart attack at just 33 years old, despite having normal cholesterol levels. He recounts the confusion and disbelief he faced in the cardiac ICU, where doctors initially dismissed his heart attack due to his seemingly healthy lipid profile. Through extensive testing, he discovered that the root causes of his heart issues were not related to cholesterol but rather to chronic inflammation, mold toxicity, and a tick-borne illness called Bartonella. He reflects on his upbringing in a moldy environment, where his family dealt with persistent leaks in their basement. This exposure, combined with his high-stress lifestyle and lack of sleep, contributed to his health crisis. Dr. Kim emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs of inflammation and the body's signals, which he ignored until it was too late. Actionable Steps: Incorporate Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish, in your diet to support cell membrane health. Focus on Nutrient-Dense Foods: Prioritize whole, unprocessed foods rich in vitamins and minerals to nourish your body and support detoxification. Support Gut Health: Consider supplements like sodium butyrate and probiotics to maintain a healthy gut microbiome and enhance detoxification. #907 The World's Easiest Diet For Visceral Fat Reduction In 14 Days with Ben Azadi

#907 The World's Easiest Diet For Visceral Fat Reduction In 14 Days with Ben Azadi

In this episode, Ben Azadi, author of Ketoflex and host of the Metabolic Freedom Podcast, outlines a seven-step diet plan to reduce visceral fat in 14 days. The first step is to lower insulin levels by swapping carbohydrates for protein and fat. Ben emphasizes that carbohydrates cause the highest blood insulin response compared to protein and fat. He suggests replacing common high-carbohydrate foods, such as oatmeal, cereal, bread, fruit, and potatoes, with cauliflower rice, eggs, red meat, and vegetables. The second step is to stop snacking between meals to avoid disrupting metabolism and preventing the body from burning visceral fat. The third step is to incorporate sprints into a workout routine three times a week, as high-intensity interval training activates hormones that promote fat burning. The fourth step is to eliminate or limit alcohol consumption, as alcohol prioritizes detoxification over fat burning and increases appetite. The fifth step is to walk at least 7,000 steps a day, particularly after meals, to blunt blood sugar spikes and reduce insulin production. The sixth step is to practice intermittent fasting on an 18/6 schedule to lower insulin levels, increase human growth hormone, and promote cellular cleaning through autophagy. The final step is to get 90 minutes of deep sleep each night to activate fat-burning hormones and accelerate fat loss. Ben also recommends measuring visceral fat through a DEXA scan or, more accurately, an MRI. 📍 Resourced Mentioned: 📍 Online Food Calculate Download for FREE. http://www.cronometer.com/ketokamp 📍 Fat Burning Recipes Delivered to Your Inbox: http://www.ketokamprecipes.com 📍Magnesium: bioptimizers.com/ketokamp use the coupon code KETOKAMP10  📍Somnifix mouth-tape: https://somnifix.com/?ref=3778298&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=goaffpro 📍 Sleep trackers..  📍Oura Ring: https://ouraring.com/discount/6e9615cebf?utm_medium=iac_raf 📍FitBit: https://amzn.to/3Z0tXn1  📍 Apple Watch: https://amzn.to/4fVPZyf 📍Whoop Band: https://amzn.to/3ZgGVyv

#905 The Supplements That ACTUALLY Work with Ben Azadi

#905 The Supplements That ACTUALLY Work with Ben Azadi

Not all supplements are created equal—in fact, many of the ones on the market result in expensive urine. The key is to use high-quality supplements derived from whole foods versus synthetic supplements made in a lab. When you take synthetic vitamins, the human body recognizes this substance as a drug. When you take real food supplements, the human body recognizes this as nutrition. What results is something called “selective absorption,” where the body fills in any nutritional gaps and excretes the rest. Real food supplements are derived from concentrated, dehydrated forms of fruits, vegetables, and other natural sources, providing a complex blend of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients as they occur in nature. You can easily spend your extra cash on supplements but the best question we can ask is…. What supplements actually work? I’m going to break this all down for you, plus I will reveal the worst supplements to never spend your money on. I’ve narrowed down my favorite supplements to these 7 supplements that actually work.
