Eventually, his health crashed.  When his health crashed, Joe realized that he needed to study biology and how the body works.  He discovered that there was a lot of opportunity within genes to optimize his health.    [04:50] The Best Markers You Should Run For Your Own Body Joe uses his website, SelfDecode, to go in-depth on his tests. If you don’t have one, you can purchase it from them.    [11:25] You Don’t Feel Well Because You Are Eating An Unsuitable Diet Many people are attracted to a diet when they notice they feel better from it. Joe eats a low-carb and meat-based diet. Genetics has something to say about how people digest carbs. Some genes are related to how people interact with their diet.  Many genes are related to how people process fats.   [18:05] About The Sleep Deficit and What Problems Joe Will See With Sleep Sleep is an art.  Sleep is something that people have to be conscious of and not take for granted.  There's a lot of things that could go wrong with sleep.  Some problems that you could be having with your sleep: Not enough REM Not enough slow-wave Waking up in the middle of the night Having to pee Not getting a good rhythm  Waking up from the light too early Light in the room at night Poor temperature Eating too late As you can see, so many things can go wrong with your sleep. If you don’t sleep well, you are not going to feel well. If you aren’t tracking your sleep, you will never know.    [22:55] Light Exposure Is Great For Feeling More Productive   If you don’t go outside during the day, you aren’t going to feel as good.  Joe gets at least three hours of light a day. When he gets light, he notices an impact.  You need at least two hours a day minimum.  The more light you get each day, the better off you are going to be.  Don’t wear your sunglasses!  If you don’t get a lot of sun exposure, red light therapy can be the next best option.    [29:30] How Unhappiness and Stress Can Affect Your Health Journey  One of the main contributors affecting your longevity and health has to do with stress. The people who live longer deal with stress a lot better. Stress really is detrimental to the body in many ways. If you don't have good personal relationships, that can cause a lot of stress.  Community is another great way to feel better and less stressed.    [36:30] Natural Stressors Are A Great Way To Feel Better  Exercise is a great natural stressor. Other stressors include cold and hot therapies.  Changing your diet is another stressor. If you aren’t stressing your mind and your body, then you aren’t going to grow.    [38:05] Environmental Toxins Are Causing Health Problems  VOCs, mold, and environmental pollution are causing health problems.  Open up your windows every single day to help with environmental toxins.  Getting outside will also be helpful.  When you breathe in the fresh air, it helps your immune system.    [43:55] What's The Difference Between Genetic Risk and Overall Risk?  Risk is a probabilistic number.  You can prevent genetic risks by living a healthy lifestyle. It was more sheltered than most people in China.  She grew up in an environment of learning and pursuing knowledge. However, Dr. Kong was also a bit of a rebel. Dr. Kong never liked rules that didn’t make sense. She has been getting in trouble since kindergarten.  Overall, Dr. Kong learned that your environment can give you a certain strength or put you in a certain restraint.   [03:45] The Differences In China and America When It Comes To Healthcare  China has the biggest population in the world.  There are two medical systems. People can choose to go into Chinese medicine or go into Western medicine. People who go into Chinese medicine also have to learn the whole Western medicine system. Only when people get great benefits will they start to accept a new approach to healthcare.  Just because studies aren’t in English, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.    [09:20] Can The Aging Process Slow Down For Humans?  There are all these markers and symptoms of aging; we still haven't been able to label aging as a disease. Aging is a comorbidity. However, aging is just part of human life.  Some people will have a heart attack and die, while others will live until their late nineties. Which way do you want your life to be? We need to pay attention to optimizing our bodies, so we don’t suddenly have health issues as we age.    [13:40] Stem Cells Have The Power and Potential To Do A Lot For Your Body  Each stem cell contains this full package of intelligence that actually makes being a human possible. A single stem cell has so much potential.  How well a stem cell treatment works will depend on where the stem cells came from and how well they are made.  Dr. Kong will get a stem cell treatment for herself every three months.    [16:40] Are Stem Cells The Key To Humans Living Longer?  Studies have come out looking at the potential capabilities of stem cells to prolong life and extend healthspan. In a study of rats and mice, a simple stem cell infusion can actually extend their lifespan by about 30%. She was given 3 to 6 months to live, even with treatment. She was filled with ascites, metastatic lesions, crippled in extreme pain and nausea, had infections simmering, severe malnourishment, and muscle wasting. Her doctors told her that chemo and surgery wouldn’t help her advanced cancer. The diagnosis of terminal cancer suddenly shook her awake and asked her point-blank if she wanted to live or die. It had taken countless doctors over six months to stop making assumptions and defaulting to writing scripts from A (anxiolytics) to Z (Zithromax).  Dr. Nasha was forced to explore alternative methods. Luckily, she was blessed with an ER doctor who allowed her the time to share the chronology of her symptoms and truly listen. In the last 6 months, Dr. Nasha have seen 5 girls under the age of 10 with Stage IV Ovarian cancer.  Dr. Nasha acknowledges that her past experiences of significant trauma and abuse contributed to her illness.   [17:42] What is The Gerson Therapy? The Gerson Therapy was popularized in the 1940s by Dr. Charlotte Gerson. Dr. Gerson had amazing experience of solving all kinds of oncology situations by putting people on a very vegetable-densed high potassium, low sodium chloride diet.  The key parts of the Gerson therapy are a strict diet, dietary supplements, and enemas.   [24:12] Sharing authentically is very powerful for healing the body.  The theory that changing mental state can affect the course of cancer has been popularized by authors such as Bernie Siegel and Deepak Chopra.  A support group program called Exceptional Cancer Patients (ECap) developed by Dr. Siegel found that women with breast cancer has a higher chance of survival rate when they are part of a support group. Take The ACE Quiz - According to the Adverse Childhood Experiences study, the rougher your childhood, the higher your score is likely to be and the higher your risk for later health problems.   [27:45] The Cancer Experience Having been diagnosed with cancer felt a very dirty secret for Dr. Nasha. The first person that she has told about her diagnosis then is now her husband.  The hardest thing when you are dealing with a cancer diagnosis is the well-meaning advice and wishes of the people in your circle.  You could take every perfect supplement. You could be in perfect metabolic flexibility. You can have an incredibly immaculate clean environment. But, if you are not dealing with the emotional healing within yourselves, you are not gonna get very far. You are not gonna get the outcomes you are hoping to achieve. People have to come to it when they are ready. Check out this resource from Dr. Nasha: 5 Steps to Take After a Cancer Diagnosis   [34:38] Top tools to heal your body At 16, Dr. Nasha decided to become a ‘vegetarian’.  A Chinese medical practitioner looked at her tongue and told her, “You have to eat some animal food.” TEST. ASSESS. ADDRESS. Adjust accordingly. Consistently do your labs. Do not guess. Do not compare.  Dr. Nasha advices people diagnosed with cancer to not tell everybody in the beginning. When you tell your loved ones, you deal with their reactions and you don’t get the opportunity to work on your own. [41:28] Issue with eating every two to three hours When we eat that often, we don’t give ourselves the bowel rest we need so that everything can clear up and evacuate. You have to give that window of autophagy to take out the garbage. Somewhere between 12 to 72 hours (depending on the person and situation), that’s what it’ll take to get some autophagy.  If you fast 13 hours a day and you are eating clean and relatively low carb, you will shift into some moderate autophagy.  When you are dealing with cancer, you’d want to moderate or lower your protein to avoid clicking on the mTOR pathways.  Kick-up your fats and restrict your carbohydrates to stay off the insulin growth factor aspect.  Bring in some intermittent fasting.  13 hours everyday, 16 to 18 hours twice a week, 3 days a month of fasting.  Walk towards to water fasting.  If you feel hungry, drink water. If after 15 minutes, you are still hungry, have a teaspon of coconut oil. After 15 minutes again, have a little bit of protein. If you are still hungry after that, eat a piece of fruit.  Hunger is more psychological than physical.    [47:30] Tips for people who are recovering from surgery  Understand why did we get here. We can’t completely heal and stay healed in the soil in which we got sick. Dr. Nasha encourages everyone to run at least annually a complete metabolic panel (CMP),  complete blood count (CBC), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and Lactic Acid Dehydrogenase (LDH) Test. Awareness is the first step. Make sure you vitamin D levels are above 50, if you are not dealing with a chronic illness. Even though an LDH test is useful in diagnosing tissue damage, other tests are usually necessary to pinpoint the location of the damage. One such test is called the LDH isoenzymes test. LDH isoenzymes are five kinds of the LDH enzyme that are found in specific concentrations in different organs and tissues.    [68:00]  What is The BRCA gene? The name “BRCA” is an abbreviation for “BReast CAncer gene.” BRCA1 and BRCA2 are two different genes that have been found to impact a person’s chances of developing breast cancer. When a BRCA gene is mutated, it may no longer be effective at repairing broken DNA and helping to prevent breast cancer. Because of this, people with a BRCA gene mutation are more likely to develop breast cancer, and more likely to develop cancer at a younger age. The primary cause of cancer is disruption of mitochondrial respiration. The mitochondria can use oxygen for respiration.  90 plus percent of all the energy our bodies use comes from the mitochondria. However, they need oxygen to work.  If the mitochondria are deprived of oxygen for too long, they will die. [21:20] What Is Homeostasis In The Human Body?  What's the underlying mechanism of health and the loss of health? Basically, it comes back to homeostasis. Homeostasis is simply balanced and harmonious body chemistry. If you're looking at the blood, one of the prime indicators of homeostasis is blood sugar level. Every cell of our body is an electromagnet, and we are electrochemical, energetic organisms.  Manmade electricity will interfere with and conflict with our homeostasis.  [27:20] How To Mitigate The Damage From Electromagnetic Fields Get away from the Wi-Fi and hardwire your devices. If it's something that your body can adapt to, it will make your body stronger. For instance, exercise is a stress that will make your body stronger.  No matter how healthy food is, if you can't digest it, then it's a poison. The most direct thing a person can do to get control back of their body and support homeostasis is to stop eating. Increase the time that you’re in homeostasis by increasing your window of fasting. [47:30] Consuming Baking Soda To Get Carbon Dioxide Production Start with half a teaspoon of baking soda.  Eventually, increase it to a teaspoon.  If you have diarrhea, then you did too much.  Keep it moderate!  Dr. Max likes to mix it with apple cider vinegar.  AND MUCH MORE! Plus, Gary Taubes inspired him. Sam was really surprised to learn that that cancer was associated with diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. He wanted to dig further on the connection between cancer and metabolic disease.  [02:10] The Nazis Protected Warburg For His Cancer Research In 1923, Warburg makes this famous discovery called the Warburg Effect. Cancer cells take up a lot more glucose than other cells and burn it without oxygen; they ferment it, just like microorganisms do. Warburg also has made other discoveries about how cells breathe and use oxygen. He wins the Nobel Prize in 1931. In 1933, the Nazis come along. Despite having a Jewish father and being openly gay, the Nazis protected Warburg because they were interested in his cancer research. [06:50] Warburg’s Studies Started To Disappear After The War After the war, Warburg’s cancer research really starts to disappear. Australia in the 1950s famously discovered the structure of DNA. Eventually, we had a new sort of genetic understanding of cancer where we can now identify specific mutations. So, how cells take up glucose and shift their metabolism was considered irrelevant because of the study of genetics. Warburg’s studies take peoeple back to diet, and there’s a huge bias against taking diet seriously. [12:20] What Sugar Does To Promote Cancer Growth If cancer is about these metabolic shifts inside of a cell, what is it about the way we eat that affects the way a cell eats? In America, one out of three women are diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime. For men, it's about one in two. Cancer is closely linked to obesity. 13 of the deadliest cancers have been solidly linked to obesity. Sam wanted to know if obesity was causing cancer or if something was driving both. Elevated levels of the hormone insulin are responsible for obesity and give microscopic cancers a chance to grow and thrive. What is it about our diet that causes insulin to rise? Sugar! The increase in sugar consumption maps pretty closely to the rise of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. [19:30] How A Keto Diet That Will Help You Prevent Cancer Sam is a huge believer that keto is a logical way to prevent cancer. The single most important thing you can do to improve your odds for cancer prevention is to keep your insulin levels low. Hyperinsulinemia promotes the growth of cancer. So, it’s important to follow a diet that keeps your insulin levels down. [22:20] Intermittent Fasting Is Another Great Way To Lower Insulin Intermittent fasting is one very successful strategy for keeping insulin down. If you can fast consistently, it seems to work quite effectively on lowering insulin. Fasting can lead to weight loss because it lowers insulin levels in the body. Sam wants to point out that thin people can still have insulin resistance. In some ways, being naturally thin can actually be a disadvantage because you can't store subcutaneous fat. [26:30] How To Optimize Insulin and Glucose Levels To Be Proactive Instead of Reactive You can't outrun a bad diet. However, exercise can help you feel better and make you more inspired to follow a low-carb diet. After workouts, you can be inspired to eat healthily and continue to feel good. Once you understand that sugar is linked to cancer, it should help you ditch it during mealtime. [38:30] Finding Therapies To Target Specific Cancer Mutations When cancer can eat lots of glucose, it's no longer thinking about dying; it's thinking about doing a lot more things. Based on which particular mutation you have, the oncologist will devise a treatment. Unfortunately, targeted therapies to specific mutations haven't been as successful as we would have liked. However, there are some cases where therapies will successfully target mutations. [42:25] The Best Preventative Measures To Preventing Cancer In The Future Eliminate sugar from your diet. Definitely eliminate liquid sugar from your diet. If you are insulin resistant, you need to reduce those insulin levels. Stop smoking. Cut out refined carbohydrates. In nursing school, Bitten learned that you suppress your appetite if you smoke. So that's why she started smoking. Then, Bitten became an alcoholic. You can’t ask “why” to addict because it's a primary illness; it doesn't have a cause. Instead, you need to ask addicts how you can help them. After that, she became a yo-yo dieter. She would try only to eat 1200 calories a day. However, this was making her processed food addiction worse. There are court documents that reveal companies took the tobacco addiction model and transferred it to sugar for children. It's not normal to think about food when you're not hungry. Americans think about food obsessively. After ditching processed foods, Dr. Ifland got rid of her brain fog, bloating, and a sinus infection. Plus, she was losing two pounds a week. Over 70% of the country in the US is now overweight or obese. Americans are deeply addicted to processed foods, and they don’t even know about it.  [12:25] You Need To Associate Processed Foods With The Pain You Feel Just because everyone is eating something, that doesn’t mean you should eat it too. You need to associate certain foods with the pain you feel from them. For instance, “I don’t eat that because it gives me a headache.” You want to retrain brain cells to associate foods with the pain you feel.   [16:55] You Can Addict Any Human To Any Substance If You Get Them Young Enough Smoking used to be the leading cause of preventable death globally. Now, diet-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Smoking and diets are based on the same business model. The business model goes like this: Advertising Availability Affordability Young age of onset Hidden addictive product formulation The younger someone is when you addict them, the harder it will be for them to overcome the addiction. [32:20] Overeating Is An Addiction Done To You By The Food Industry It takes years to go to a social situation and not be bothered by people eating processed foods. The conformance tribe is significantly activated by food and by people you know well. The better you know a person, the more likely they will be able to trigger you into eating something bad. Overeating and diet-related diseases were done to you for profit by the food industry. [36:45] Free Donuts For Anyone Who Gets A Vaccine!   There is corruption in the pharmaceutical industry. 60% of Covid deaths are in people who have an underlying diet-related condition. People wouldn't have been able to eat enough processed foods to get a condition unless their addiction was driving them. The message to the world should have been about metabolic health. The addiction business model is also used by the pharmaceutical industry. [42:10] True or False: Sugar Addiction Is Not A Real Thing Dietitians are the “professional” arm of the processed food industry. The medical community is the marketing arm of the pharmaceutical industry. 40% of dietitians work for the processed food industry. If you’ve been to a conference for dietitians, they are sponsored by Kraft and Nabisco. Luckily, many dieticians are rebelling against processed foods. Processed food addictions are deliberately made worse by the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. You need to go and ask for help to recover from your addiction. Also, you need to be really patient on your journey. Lastly, you need to incorporate healthy living into your life. [51:40] When Can You Start Eating Sugar Again?  People think that they will always want sugar. If you give up processed foods, then you will stop the cravings.
