Dr Cate Shanahan, The Fatburn Fix, 8 Fats to Avoid on Keto, & Metabolism Myths KKP:178

Dr Cate Shanahan, The Fatburn Fix, 8 Fats to Avoid on Keto, & Metabolism Myths KKP:178

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, the leading authority on nutrition and human metabolism, Dr. Cate Shanahan. A board-certified Family Physician with over 20 years of clinical experience, and NY Times bestselling author of The FatBurn Fix, Deep Nutrition and Food Rules, her expertise is fixing the underlying problems that cause metabolic damage and inflammation, leading to autoimmunity, weight gain, diabetes, cancer and accelerated aging processes. Her passion is helping people feel their best. After getting her BS in biology from Rutgers University, she trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University’s graduate school before attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She practiced in Hawaii for ten years where she studied ethnobotany and her healthiest patient’s culinary habits. She applied her learning and experiences in all these scientific fields to write Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. Together with Dr. Tim DiFrancesco and NBA legend Gary Vitti, she created the PRO Nutrition program for the LA Lakers and helped forge a partnership between Whole Foods Market and numerous NBA teams. In May of 2018 she begin Director of Metabolic Health for ABC Fine Wine and Spirits, a progressive, family-run company interested in saving money by the betterment of health. She’s also the Medical & Scientific Advisor at CB Supplements, overseeing their premium-grade multi collagen protein, and for beliv, a forward-thinking Latin American beverage company. In this episode, Dr. Cate reveals the details behind her health journey and nutritional career. Dr. Cate discloses what it was like to work for the LA Lakers and the diet that helped Kobe Bryant recover from a terrible ankle injury. Also, Dr. Cate explains why we need to avoid The Hateful Eight Oils and how it could be the key to reducing coronavirus deaths. Plus, we talk all about omega-3s, the problem with fish oils, and everything you need to know about our metabolisms. // E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. http://www.Kettleandfire.com/ketokamp and use KETOKAMP at checkout to save 15% on your entire order. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off // T I M E S T A M P S [00:30] About Dr. Cate While in Hawaii, Dr. Cate got a mysterious problem with her right knee. Nothing would help it. She had surgery and saw multiple specialists. Eventually, Dr. Cate took her husband’s advice and cut the sugar. After learning about nutrition, Dr. Cate realized that our health problems started in the 1950s. Now, Dr. Cate says we should take advantage of all the living and edible parts of our landscape. [09:05] How Dr. Cate Gets Her Message Out To The World There are so many barriers in place for education on nutrition. For one, Dr. Cate would give talks about nutrition. So, she got a reputation for being a Master of Nutrition. However, people would come from all over Hawaii to ask Dr. Cate everything! There was no way to manage it. Later, Dr. Cate moved to New Hampshire to get her message out. She found out the medical system was silencing her message, not where she lived. Currently, Dr. Cate works for a company directly. That way, her income is not based on churning through people as fast as possible. [12:50] Working For The LA Lakers The only reason Dr. Cate worked for the LA Lakers was because of her husband. Her husband had the idea that it would be great if there were a radical overhaul on their nutritional science. When players get injured, Dr. Cate will use the natural healing properties of bone broth to get them on the court as fast as possible. Kobe Bryant was totally on board for the natural healing methods. After an ankle injury, he recovered in two weeks using a diet. Bone broth and collagen are like a missing food group – it helps skin, hair, nails, ligaments, and the gut. The most important thing that no one is talking about is The Hateful Eight Seed Oils. These oils are incompatible with athletic performance. A big part of Dr. Cate’s job was making sure that the players knew what to order and what to avoid. [19:00] About The Hateful Eight Avoid these oils: Corn Canola Cottonseed Soy Sunflower Safflower Rice Grapeseed They are too high in unstable fatty acids. The average person is getting most of their calories from these oils. Without these seed oils, we would not have the burden of chronic disease. We were healthier 100 years ago, and we had no clue about vitamins, minerals, and supplements. [24:10] The Great Exchange After a certain point, our body wants nothing to do with these unstable fatty acids. Two percent of daily calories should come from omega-3 and omega-6. We actually need more omega-3 than we do omega-6. The exchange of good fatty acids for bad fatty acids opens the door to chronic disease. Once we exceed the two percent amount of unstable fatty acids, then they end up in our body fat. We have a lot of people who are on the skinny side but are centrally obese. Our bodies cannot traffic these unstable acids properly. That’s why it stays near the fat lining of our intestines. Start eating the monounsaturated fatty acids. Clear your life of the seed oils. [28:55] We Need More Omega-3s Than Omega-6s On a healthy diet, omega-3s are more likely to get damaged during cooking. For the amount that is ultimately absorbed, we need more omega-3 sources in the food that we eat. You can’t supplement more omega-3 if you have been eating a standard American diet. Instead, you have to cut the omega-6. If you reduce omega-6 without increasing your intake of omega-3, then your blood levels of omega-3 will start to rise. Oxidation science is very complicated, and there is a lot to consider. [33:40] Fish Oil Is Highly Unstable Oxygen will attack the bond and destroy the molecule. Fish oil has two double bonds. So the oxygen is nine billion times more likely to attack. Fish oils can have five double bonds. It is so unstable that it rarely makes it off the shelf before it’s destroyed. The fish oil will turn into toxic compounds. People are getting toxic compounds from low-quality fish oils. [36:30] How To Reduce Coronavirus Deaths Brazil leads in the consumption of seed oils. They are also the country that leads in the number of deaths from coronavirus. Countries that consume more peanut oil have a lot fewer coronavirus deaths. This isn’t a crazy coincidence. The connection is inflammation. Coronavirus is a modest virus when you compare it to things like the bubonic plague. The virus will make our own processes work against us. That way, the virus can continue to divide into our bodies. When people die from the virus, it’s the inflammation in their lungs. Avoid unstable fats to stay healthy. [41:35] Thoughts On Peanut Oil Peanut oil straddles the seed oil and the nut oil worlds. Nut oils are much more stable than seed oils. Peanuts are really seeds. However, it’s not enough to be a problem in our body. You do not have to process the peanut so harshly. You can extract it without high heat, pressure, and chemicals. You can have peanut oils made with pure and raw materials. [45:00] The Metabolism Does Not Have Speeds Our metabolism doesn’t have speeds; it has efficiency and inefficiency. When we are a fat burner, it can efficiently switch from burning calories in our last meal to burning fat if we have a healthy metabolism. Our metabolism can burn our body fat, so we don’t get hungry hours after a meal. That is an efficient metabolism. If our metabolism is inefficient, then we have a hard time burning body fat. Shay Rowbottom, Eat Fats & Organ Meats, Problems With The Vegan Diet, Self Love, LinkedIn: KKP 63

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 63 with Shay Rowbottom!     Today, I have here with me, Shay Rowbottom, influencer, and content creator. Shay has created millions of dollars, millions of followers, and billions of video views for her clients.    Shay Rowbottom is the co-founder and former COO of a Facebook agency that worked with companies like Petco, Yahoo, Verlo, and dozens more in creating content and devising content strategies for social media.   Since joining the LinkedIn platform in May of 2018, Shay has grown to over 130,000 followers, garnered over 20 million views on her content, and generated seven figures in sales for partnering media companies. Now, she’s ready to share her strategies with you and produce the same kind of results for your brand.   In this episode, Shay Rowbottom explains her various health issues growing up, including her permanent cough, acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay’s doctor prescribed her to a low-carb diet, and breathing exercises – all of her health problems were magically gone in a matter of weeks. Then, Shay discusses the many issues with the vegan diet and other food trends in the United States. Stay tuned to hear Shay explain her LinkedIn success and why you need to create a LinkedIn profile!   [05:00] About Shay Rowbottom   Shay’s mother was very conscious of sugar products and knew that low-fat products were not ideal. At age eleven, Shay became a vegetarian. For four years, Shay did not eat meat (or vegetables)! Her meals consisted of bagels and pizza. At age fifteen, Shay was sick and sluggish. Shay’s immune system was compromised – she had a permanent cough. On top of this, she had acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay saw a doctor who promised she would cure her health issues. The first thing she did was put her on a strict diet of no gluten, dairy, or eggs. Plus, Shay was prescribed breathing exercises. Within two weeks, Shay’s asthma was gone. “My body runs best without carbs.”   [13:50] Eating Fats and Organ Meats Organ meats were a total wake up call for Shay. We are not supposed to be eating muscle meat. The heart and liver are where the nutrients are. Beef is delicious – she eats 100% grass-fed pasture-raised red meat. “I’m a beef girl.” All the minerals are in the organ meat. Shay loves the beef heart.   [16:45] Problems with the Vegan Diet The commitment is so damaging. In one month, you will feel amazing and decide to commit to it for life. When you start craving meat, your commitment will make you ignore the signs of your body. When you commit, it makes it so hard to get out of the lifestyle. Anytime you define yourself with a diet; you put yourself in a box. If you eat the right animal products, you won’t be contributing negatively to the environment. Any extreme is not good. People get too caught up in the lifestyle. Most vegans will return to eating meat in their lifetime. Your genetics will determine how long it will take for you to get sick.   [23:20] Alcohol Cleanse Shay did one month with no alcohol. She never felt better! Then, Shay extended her cleanse to four months. It was such a pleasant experience, and she ended up changing her relationships with alcohol. Sobriety also helps with health. Keto and wine are no fun! Alcohol will raise your glucose and knock you out of ketosis.   [27:55] Bad Health Trends The food in the United States isn’t really food. We all go to these restaurants and eat these foods that aren’t real. These foods are killing us slowly. We are a depressed society – we have a lot of issues with unresolved mass trauma. It has created a strong culture of addiction. “We don’t make it easy for people to heal.” At the end of the day, we can blame the system. However, we can also blame the market. Money speaks, and our dollars are buying sugar.   [31:00] Vegetable Oils Find restaurants that don’t cook with vegetable oils. If we change where we put our dollars, then we can make a big difference. Tell restaurants you aren’t going to eat foods with vegetable oils. Create your own life. When you love and respect yourself, you don’t want to put harmful foods in your body. “People are sick and tired of being sick and tired.”   [33:50] Self-Love A lot of us get away from our intuition as a kid. Shay trusts her gut. She listens to it and follows her gut and knows how to set boundaries. Shay still does the breathing exercises that she learned as a kid. Plus, Shay is easy with herself and forgives herself often.   [35:20] Get on LinkedIn Shay got on LinkedIn to attract leads to her business. LinkedIn is the best platform to reach educated people with money. Plus, it gives the most generous reach with video content. You’ll get the cheapest views with the most educated audience. Shay coaches Ben on LinkedIn. LowCarbUSA Founder Doug Reynolds, Ketogenic Diet - The NEW Standard of Care: KKP 60

LowCarbUSA Founder Doug Reynolds, Ketogenic Diet - The NEW Standard of Care: KKP 60

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 60 with Doug Reynolds!     Today, I a have Doug Reynolds, founder of LowCarbUSA®, a platform for scientists, entrepreneurs, and the medical community to share their research surrounding the low carbohydrate and ketogenic lifestyles.   Founded in 2015, LowCarbUSA® is an organization focused on dietary education and support by hosting scientific conferences, providing online coaching, a comprehensive library of scientific papers supporting the way of eating, and a worldwide database of 'Low Carb Friendly' healthcare providers and nutritionists.   In Doug Reynold's early '30s, he had run almost a hundred marathons and ultras and could eat pretty much anything he liked. As Doug approached 40, however, he noticed he was putting on a little weight each year and, no matter how hard he trained, Doug was not able to get the weight off again. In the end, he was always injured and hating running and life itself.   When Doug was first introduced to the concept of the Ketogenic / Banting lifestyle, he could not believe that an athlete could function without carbohydrates. However, as an engineer at heart, Doug started reading all the research, and he found that it made total sense. Plus, it explained all the issues he was having, including the things Doug struggled with back when he was running well.   In this episode, Doug Reynolds opens the show describing his experience gaining weight and then losing it with the keto diet. He was inspired, so he started LowCarbsUSA and describes the lifechanging conferences they hold each year. Plus, Doug explains how he is committed to helping to reverse the current consensus on a diet here in the US and around the world. The consequences of the governmental dietary policies introduced in 1977 have been catastrophic, and it's time we all took a stand! Tune in! Become a member of the Keto Kamp Academy today! Fresh Pressed Olive Oil: http://www.ketokampoliveoil.com Purity Coffee: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com   [00:15] About Doug Reynolds   Doug was a distance runner; he thought he was bulletproof. Doug would run 55-mile races in Africa. As he aged, Doug started to pick up a few pounds of weight every year. At one point, Doug stood on the scale and was horrified to see he was 35 pounds over his ideal weight. Without any resources, Doug tried the keto diet with trial and error. His inflammation cleared up, he lost the weight, and he stopped snoring at night.   [11:15] LowCarbsUSA® Conferences Doug’s first conference far exceeded his expectations. Every conference, they end up building a community and a culture within their organization. They also live stream all of their events – it is available to people online. The live stream is cheaper, and you will not have to travel. However, the vibe and the comradery are lifechanging.   [20:00] Standard of Care Doctors have many challenges suggesting keto to their patients. The standard of care is not a document. You don’t learn it at college. It is a consensus of practitioners in a similar environment with similar training what they actually do in practice. There is now a document guiding physicians on how to utilize a low-carb diet with their patients. Eventually, practitioners who do not acknowledge this diet as a viable way to change a health outcome, they may have to face a malpractice lawsuit.   [35:30] The Conference in Indonesia The audience was in tears when they heard of a boy who had a certain condition and was told he would never walk again. After the boy and his parents started the keto diet, he was able to walk again. Not only did that miracle happen, but his parents also lost weight, and their health improved.   [42:55] Practicing Gratitude Doug is grateful for finding out about the keto diet at the age of 51.   [43:40] Doug’s Definition of Perfect Health Weight is not part of the definition. It comes along for the ride. Doug started keto because of weight. He only learned about the metabolic benefits as he went along. Perfect health is all your biomarkers being where they need to be. That does not include LDL. If you are not eating carbs, then LDL is not an issue. People focus way too much on weight. No one ever dies from being fat; they die from the underlying metabolic issues that made them fat. Society is so focused on weight. If you get yourself metabolically healthy, the weight will come. Be patient. Weight loss is a side-effect of perfect health.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Doug’s Website Read his blog Read the Clinical Guidelines Document Connect with Doug Reynolds: Twitter Facebook Pinterest YouTube Instagram Attend the LowCarbUSA conference in Boca Raton, FL. For years I told my clients to track every calories. The result, 99.99% failure rate. It doesn't matter if you are eating a ketogenic, low carb high fat diet, I still wouldn't recommend keeping track of these calories because its a distraction to what really matters; the hormones and the metabolism. Food is NOT just about calories; food is information. When we eat food, every bite signals a metabolic response. 💯 . We can choose to eat high quality foods that will elicit a healthy metabolic response, or we can choose to eat poor quality foods that will elicit a negative metabolic response; the choice is yours. 🤔 . There's a significant difference between 500 calories of a kale salmon salad, and 500 calories of gummy bears. The former will elicit a healthier metabolic response, the latter will cause hormonal disruption, rollercoaster energy levels and weight gain (symptom). 🤬 . They are the same exact calories. The human body doesn't give a crap about calories! ✊🏻 . There's no mechanism or receptor sites in the human body that keeps track of calories. So why the heck do we count them?🤔 . 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a calculator. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a bank account. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a math equation 👉🏻The human body is a complex chemistry lab 🙌🏻 It's time to stop focusing on the quantity, and start focusing on the quality of the foods we are eating.🙏 . Lara Adler, Break Through Weight Loss Resistance, Ways to Detox The Liver, Remove Toxins and Lose Weight KKP 57

Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Lara Adler, an Environmental Toxins Expert & Educator, a Certified Holistic Health Coach, and someone who is deeply passionate about changing the landscape of disease through addressing toxic exposures.   Lara Adler has been on a mission to help allied health professionals better support their clients & patients they serve by addressing exposures to environmental chemicals. She also guides her students on how to seamlessly integrate this topic into their practices and to leverage their education to distinguish themselves in their fields.   Lara has worked with thousands of practitioners in over 26 countries in her online programs to help them understand the links between chemicals in our daily lives and their links to chronic health conditions like metabolic disorders, thyroid disease, fertility, and behavioral problems in children.   Through her flagship course, Talking Toxins, Lara gives health professionals like nutritionists, health coaches, ND’s, RN’s and chiropractors, as well as healthy-minded consumers a deep education on where these toxic exposures are happening, along with actionable steps to take. The goal is action, not overwhelm.   In this episode, Lara Adler starts by discussing how our cell metabolism can be causing resistance to weight loss. Genetics can play a significant role in this resistance, as well as the pharmaceuticals you may be taking. Then, Lara explains all the toxins and chemicals we are introducing to our lives without even knowing. These toxins can be detrimental to our health. However, the good news is there are ways to rid your body of these chemicals. The easiest way to get started with detox is by visiting the sauna every single day. Lara also reveals other ways to rid our bodies of toxins and why this process doesn’t need to be overwhelming. However, Lara never thought she would pursue anything professionally in the space. After eight years in another career, several people suggested she become a health coach. Lara got certified as a health coach. All of her clients were coming to her for weight loss advice. Some of Lara’s clients had terrific results, whereas others had no results at all. What was she missing? Lara dove into the literature around resistance to weight loss. Lara learned about chemicals that mess with our metabolism and cause resistance weight loss.   [14:15] Why You May Have Resistance to Weight Loss Genetic differences may predispose you to specific health conditions. Whereas, other people may not manifest these health conditions. For instance, two people who are smokers can have very different outcomes.   [15:20] About the PPAR Pathway When PPAR gets activated, it changes the programming of our fat cells that lead toward weight gain. Our cells increase their capacity for fat storage. PPAR can also increase our number of fat cells. It happens at a cellular level completely absent from diet and exercise. This is referred to as chemically induced weight gain. Chemicals can make us fat. Antidepressants cause weight gain – it is a well-established side effect.   [19:15] Fasting with Toxins We are burning fat while fasting. Normally, we are dumping our toxins into our fat. When we start losing weight rapidly, the toxins are dumped into our bloodstream. Our liver has to try and keep up with this load. Unless your liver is working perfectly, your liver can still be overloaded. People who have undergone rapid weight loss have shown a thousandfold increase of toxins flooding their systems. People often will get so sick that their hair even falls out. We want to be careful when we are fasting or losing weight. Toxins will desperately search for fat. Your metabolism cannot get rid of toxins – they get recycled back into the system. The body will rebound by adding fat to house the toxins.   [22:15] Ways to Support the Liver Anything that supports the liver will be your friend on this journey. Lara’s goal is to dial back the exposure and amp up what our body is getting rid of. We can do this by supporting the liver. Take activated charcoal – you need to know how to take a binder because it is a whole process. Sweat every day if you can in a sauna. Law enforcement is using sweat patches to see whether or not there are narcotics in someone’s system. Sweat works! Some toxins will exit through sweat rather than any other pathway. You can measure chemicals in urine, but there are still toxins under your skin. A detox should be done every single day. We just want to support this process in all of the ways possible.   [30:20] Chemicals to Look Out For BPA or bisphenol A can be found in cash register receipts, canned foods, the lining of canned foods, hard plastic materials. They are not found in soft plastics. Marketing from these companies is really misleading. If you look at a Ziploc bag, they all say BPA free – it never contained BPA. They manipulate the consumer’s lack of understanding. BPA is only one chemical in a family of chemicals known as bisphenol. BPA got a bad rap in the public arena because a group of mothers saw it was in baby bottles. Companies swapped BPA for BPS – they are nearly identical. Studies about these substitutions are showing they may actually be worse.   [39:45] There Is No Safe Water Bottle Brand Drink out of stainless steel. People don’t want to use as much plastic, so they start reusing their plastic containers. The right thing to do is not to buy plastic. Our foods come packaged in plastic, and we can’t avoid it. Avoid plastic when buying olive oil, coconut oil, and nut butter. There are 4 key things that increase the way chemicals migrate out of plastic: Heat Oil Acidity Abrasion If you have oily or fatty foods – it will increase the number of chemicals leaking out of the plastic and into the foods.   [45:35] Cleaning Our Indoor Air Household cleaners cause a bigger percentage of air pollution than automobiles. You need to clean up what is happening in your house. Breathing this stuff every single day is harmful. House dust is actually lead, heavy metals, pesticides, and non-stick coating. These chemicals settle in the dust in our house. Dusting is so important to eliminate these harmful chemicals.   [56:20] One Action Step at a Time When people come to this conversation and feel overwhelmed they need to take one action step. You can’t occupy a space of being proactive and being overwhelmed. Action not overwhelm. Start doing stuff even if it’s really small. Your first step can be visiting a sauna every day. It is easy to become obsessed with this topic and be afraid of touching anything. We do not need to be afraid of touching a plastic container. Take action on these things, and do not grab the receipt!     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Lara’s Website Read her Blog Enroll in Talking Toxins Connect with Lara Adler: Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest   Sign up for the Keto Kamp Academy Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube Purity Coffee Use ketokamp for 10% off Get 50 Loads Of 100% Natural, Non-Toxic Laundry Soap FREE http://bit.ly/2K7WVvU
