Chris Irvin | Shocking benefits of the carnivore diet with The Ketologist KKP: 219

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Chris Irvin, a nutrition researcher, writer, and educator. He holds a master's degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science and is currently the education manager for Perfect Keto. During his time in grad school, Chris began to see the keto industry growing. Chris was in big support of this industry growth because he thinks a robust industry can support good research, but with so many companies coming on the scene just trying to make a buck, Chris became discouraged and kept his distance. After spending a couple of years researching and developing content about keto, Chris decided to start looking more into the keto industry because he wanted to bring more research and education into the industry. Fortunately, Perfect Keto was looking for someone to improve research and education within their company, something they were already doing very well! Chris was already a big fan of Dr. Anthony Gustin and the quality products he was making at Perfect Keto, so it ended up making a great fit. Now Chris focuses on learning and educating the masses on the ketogenic diet through The Ketologist and Perfect Keto! In this episode, Chris Irvin opens the show speaking about his journey to the keto diet and eventually the carnivore diet. First, we talk about how ketosis can actually help you build muscle despite people thinking insulin is required for muscle growth. In fact, ketones can stimulate muscle growth. Later, we dive deep into the carnivore diet. Chris explains how he found the carnivore diet, why the carnivore diet is beneficial for our gut, and if the carnivore diet is sustainable long-term. Tune in as Keto Kamp members join the show to ask Chris questions about supplements and what to pay attention to when trying the carnivore diet. // E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off [02:00] About Chris Irvin Chris found the keto diet at age 24. At grad school, he learned about the benefits of keto from a sports perspective. When Chris tried keto, he didn't feel that great. However, after a few days, Chris started to feel energized. During his research at grad school, Chris got to look at how keto would affect athletic performance. If you want to learn about the therapeutic effects of keto, Chris recommends reading Tripping over the Truth: https://www.amazon.com/Tripping-over-Truth-Overturning-Entrenched/dp/1603587292/benazadi-20 Chris became frustrated that all this research was available, but people didn’t have access to it. So, Chris decided to start making content to educate the masses on the ketogenic diet. [16:45] How Ketosis Helps You Build Muscle People think carbohydrates and insulin are required for muscle growth. However, you don’t have to have them. There are other ways that you can stimulate muscle growth. Ketones are muscle-sparing. You don’t lose muscle with ketosis. Ketones can also stimulate muscle growth by activating muscle proteins. Getting enough protein will be essential for muscle growth, especially for men. Even for people who aren’t focused on gaining muscle, there should be a focus on retaining muscle. Chronic diseases will destroy our health through muscle loss – so increase your protein intake. [21:00] How Chris Got Into Carnivore Chris tried carnivore about two and a half years ago. At first, Chris didn’t think an all-meat diet would be beneficial for people. After trying carnivore, he loved the way that he felt. It also changed the way that he looks at nutrition because he now prioritizes quality meat. Chris found that the carnivore diet gives him more strength in the gym, improves his productivity, decreases his hunger, improves his body composition, and even increases his ketone levels. After seeing the stories and hearing so many people who get excellent benefits from a carnivore diet, Chris thinks people can decide if it's the right fit for them. [26:40] Getting Vitamins And Minerals Through The Carnivore Diet Surprisingly, there are loads of nutrients in red meat. People think that plants provide us with essential micronutrients, and cutting them out will lead to deficiencies. However, micronutrients in plants are poorly absorbed in humans. Ketones are able to provide the benefits that vitamin C does. Plus, your demand for vitamin C will be less when you’re in ketosis. You need lots of vitamins on the standard American diet; your body doesn’t need as many vitamins in a carnivore diet. [31:45] Repairing The Gut With Carnivore Gut health will improve with the carnivore diet for two reasons: Plants contain compounds that are toxic, and they can wreak havoc on our bodies. Some people are sensitive to these plants from overconsumption. So, when we eliminate those plants, the gut can start to heal through carnivore. Meat will provide nutrients to help with the repair of your gut. It can repair the lining of your gut and the structure of your gut. Thus, reducing leaky gut syndrome. [38:20] Is The Carnivore Diet Sustainable? The carnivore diet is sustainable for an extended period of time. There is no reason to think that this diet is going to be bad for us. If you’re talking about sustainability for enjoying the diet, then it depends on the person. For someone who likes to cook and needs more flavor, the carnivore diet can be a bit boring. People can benefit from the carnivore as a diet as a tool in their toolbelt. Use the diet in four to six-week blocks. You can join The Carnivore Reset Challenge: https://meatreset.com. [52:20] Supplements For The Carnivore Diet Electrolytes will be a necessity on the carnivore diet. Find a powder or a capsule electrolyte supplement. [56:00] Repairing The Gut After Antibiotics The longer you’ve been taking antibiotics, the more damage that has occurred in your gut. In most cases, there is a two-week minimum to try the carnivore diet to see how your digestion is responding. Impaired gut health will zap your energy and prevent you from feeling great. If you’re not feeling great on carnivore, then you need to stick with it longer. [59:20] Feeling Better On Carnivore There should be a noticeable change that your quality of life is better on the carnivore diet. When you’re healthy, you’ll feel better. Digestion should improve. You won’t feel bloated or nauseous after meals. More energy and more mental clarity will also be a sign that the carnivore diet is working. AND MUCH MORE! How Much Fish Oil Is Too Much? Research on Fish Oil With Dr Jeff Matheson: KKP 75

How Much Fish Oil Is Too Much? Research on Fish Oil With Dr Jeff Matheson: KKP 75

Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Dr. Jeff Matheson, co-founder of an all-natural migraine and headache centre, which promotes a non-narcotic approach to pain and headache management. Plus, Dr. Jeff Matheson is the co-founder and medical director of Pure Life Science.   Dr. Jeff Matheson successfully practiced medicine in emergency departments across Canada and internationally, from Ontario, Newfoundland, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He later was appointed Medical Director of Med-EmergInc in 1998, a company dedicated to staffing underserved hospitals in Canada.   Dr. Matheson has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South East Asia and well as Oceania. According to Dr. Matheson, “traveling is the best education!” Dr. Matheson is an enthusiastic believer, as well as being immersed in other cultures. Similarly, if one does not listen to patients, one won’t hear what is necessary to understand the patient’s problem, i.e., the patient’s “culture.”   It is with this ability to listen and empathize with the patients that Dr. Matheson allows an accurate diagnosis and develop sustainable solutions, optimizing health, and patient outcomes. If a solution cannot be determined, resources will be dedicated, through the involvement of alternative care specialists, ascertaining the best possible treatment for the patient by trying to treat causes, not just manage symptoms.   In this episode, Dr. Matheson opens up the show discussing his introduction to the ketogenic diet and how exactly quality fats will promote health. Dr. Matheson dives deep into the relationship between the cell membrane and our DNA. Plus, he speaks about the troubles of fish oil and why we should never take the supplement. Stay tuned to hear Dr. Matheson reveal other damaging fats for our bodies and all about his Pure Form Omegas.   PureForm Plant Based Omegas: http://bit.ly/2OL0FWU . [05:45] About Dr. Matheson    Matheson realized there was no standardization for pain management in Canada. He created a standardization; now, all pain clinics need to use his system. Matheson had all sorts of pain himself. After trying a specific diet, all of the pain melted away. Then, he started prescribing the diet to his patients, who had similar results. Now, Dr. Matheson wants to introduce people to the proper fats for our bodies. Bad fats can harm you just as much as carbohydrates can.   [11:10] How Quality Fats Promote Health The structure of the cell is based on fat. The cell membrane is a fatty membrane. If you do not have a membrane, then you do not have a cell. If we are putting bad fats in our bodies, then we will have a weak cell membrane. How does the cell membrane interact with the rest of the cell? The mitochondria are also made up of fats – it is loaded with the membrane. Unhealthy cell membranes will result in lethargy.   [13:40] Relationship Between the Cell Membrane and our DNA 25% - 33% of your cell membrane is made up of omega-6. 40% of your mitochondria membrane is made up of omega-6. 100% of your cardiolipin is made up of omega-6. When you keep DNA under repair, you need proper omega-6. Our brains take 20% of our metabolic energy. If our mitochondria have bad fats in them, it can’t produce the energy that the nucleus requires to stay healthy. We are being damaged by radiation, so it requires a lot of energy to keep it repaired. If we can’t keep it repaired, we will run into mutations and possibly cancers.   [16:20] What’s the Issue with Fish Oil? Fish oil became popular when researchers found out Inuit people had low rates of heart disease. They assumed their pristine health was because of eating so much fish. However, the Inuit people didn’t eat that much fish. Their diets consisted mostly of seal, whale, and blubber. Most fish oil studies are not very well done scientifically. Fish oils are way too unstable for humans to be consuming. It is taxing our ability to keep the oil from oxidizing. A majority of the fish oil on the shelves are already oxidized – there is no way that can be healthy for you. It turns out that you only need 4.3 milligrams of DHA a day for a healthy brain. Matheson is amazed at how many punches the human body can take and still function.   [22:10] How to Get DHA Without Fish Oil Most people get enough DHA. DHA can hang around the brain for about 18 months. There isn’t a significant turnover, and we do not need tons of it. You have to have the right fats to make DHA in the first place.   [23:00] Where Does the Fish Oil End Up? The fish oil will get broken down. The body will recognize it as a toxin. Most of the fish oil is artificial, and the body cannot even recognize its chemical makeup. You can decrease the efficiency of mitochondria by introducing DHA.   [28:30] The Most Pristine Fish Oil in the World Your body can get rid of the fish oil pretty fast. If you are on fish oil for a month, do you feel any better on it? If you feel good on the fish oil, then something positive is happening. Fish oil can have a cortisol effect at first. However, it is not a long-term or healthy effect.   [36:40] Damaging Fats Plant oils that are processed and rancid olive oils. When you oxidize an oil, it starts to smell bad. So, the manufactures deodorize the oil. Now, the oil cannot take oxygen. Putting that oil in your cell membrane will result in the Warburg Effect. If you decrease the oxygen in your cells, then they will turn cancerous. 60% of us will get cancer in our lifetime. In the 1900s, it was 3%.   [43:30] About Pure Form Omegas Pure Form is all organized and cold-pressed under a blanket of nitrogen. The oil has not touched oxygen, and every capsule has a bubble in it. We used to eat things straight from the ground. Now, we don’t have a choice anymore. People will feel the difference, and they will feel it quickly.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Pure Life Science Follow Pure Life Science Facebook Twitter Pinterest Instagram YouTube Email sales@pureformomega.com Call 905-812-8333 Visit the HMC Centre Website Follow Dr. Jeff Matheson LinkedIn Facebook Listen to The Keto Kamp Podcast with Brian Peskin Buy the Pure Form Omegas Learn about Low Carb USA Watch The Truth About Fish Oil & Three Reasons to Avoid It Join the Keto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00 Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. Danny Vega | Mistakes Made With The Ketogenic Diet, Keto For Kids, SuperStarch: KKP 72

Danny Vega | Mistakes Made With The Ketogenic Diet, Keto For Kids, SuperStarch: KKP 72

Today, I am grateful to have here with me, Danny Vega, part of the Fat Fueled Family - a blog, podcast, and YouTube channel dedicated to leading a movement that will empower families to eat better, move more, and grow closer. They invite you into their lives and hope you enjoy their content.   In June of 2016, Danny discovered the ketogenic lifestyle, and he never looked back. Danny found so many benefits within a week of switching that he knew this would be the new way of life. Inflammation and injuries from years of playing on turf and beating himself up with heavy lifting were gone.   Danny regained control over his hunger and found mental clarity and an increase in productivity that he had never experienced before. In August of 2017, after over a year of dipping their toes in the water, his two boys joined him. Desmond, the eldest, felt an immediate increase in energy and improvement in his allergies and asthma. Dean, the youngest, has had astounding improvements in his eczema and mood.   Danny's children are immune to cravings. It has been a fantastic thing to see. They thought their kids were "picky" just like most kids supposedly are; keto changed their taste buds, and now they crave real, nourishing food. Best of all, they do not feel restricted in any way!   In this episode, Danny breaks some common myths about the ketogenic diet – during the first three weeks of the diet, you shouldn't be lowering your protein intake. Danny also touches on the importance of salt, potassium, electrolytes, and magnesium. Then, Danny explains why he would carb load during high-performance athletic workouts. Stay tuned to hear the ways Danny's kids utilize the ketogenic diet and how they navigate the kid's menu at restaurants. Plus, Danny reveals the science behind SuperStarch®.   Join the Keto Kamp Academy  Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00   [06:45] About Danny Vega    Danny was getting recruited to big-name schools for his football skills, even Columbia University. In 2013, Danny got into power lifting – making it into the top 25 in the country. When he deadlifted 700 lbs., he tore his left meniscus. In 2016, Danny’s knee was hurting like crazy, so he decided just to get healthy. He tried a typical bodybuilding diet; they did well. Eventually, he and his wife started on the ketogenic diet.   [18:25] Mistakes Made with the Ketogenic Diet There is an obsession with moderating protein. Keto is getting to a point where there is enough information out there that most people think they know what it is. People think if they overeat protein, it will turn into sugar. Danny says you can’t lower protein too much in the first three weeks. Make sure your protein is high in the first three weeks. Aim for five to eight grams of salt per day. Five grams of salt is not five grams of sodium. A teaspoon of salt will give you two grams of sodium. Get to a higher point with your metabolism so you have more to work with. Danny gets women to eat more each day because they do not eat enough. Being undernourished will impede fat loss. It’s not just cramps we should be worrying about. Potassium will help minimize overnight muscle spasms, which may contribute to you waking up in the middle of the night. Keep your electrolytes high and take a magnesium supplement.   [28:10] Should You Do a Weekly Scheduled Carb Load? Fifty grams of carbs post-workout was all Danny could give to himself. However, he knew the keto diet wasn’t taking into account high-performance athletes. A fat-adapted athlete is going to be able to eat a lot more carbs. Although, that doesn’t mean they should eat more carbs. Fat can create the sugar that we need. If you are chronically doing high-performance training, your body will be stressed without the carbs. It’s important to have carbs during days like that. Glucose intolerance can act up over time while practicing the ketogenic diet. Use carb loads when you need them; weekly might not necessarily make sense. “Everything should be done strategically.”   [34:30] Never Feed Your Kids From The Kid’s Menu This is one of Danny’s biggest pet peeves. We are doing our children such a disservice. If you are trying to conceive, take methylated b vitamins. Breastfeed your children for gut health and immune health. Nurse your babies until they start showing interest in food. Then, cut the babies food into strips. When you go to restaurants, you will see the kid’s menu with mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, and hotdogs. If both parents are together, get both parties on the same page. Talk to your partner about what is okay for your kids to eat. Get rid of all the crap in the house – have a list of non-negotiables. When you go out, have a plan. In the car, Danny pulls up the menu and scopes out the options. “Don’t fight your kids on nutrition.”   [47:50] About SuperStarch SuperStarch® is a patented energy source without sugar or stimulants that delivers a slow-release of carbohydrates to steady your blood sugar. With SuperStarch, Danny’s blood sugar doesn’t go crazy. Danny is consulting and spreading the message for supplementing the fat-adapted athlete. SuperStarch® is a smarter energy source to avoid the spike & crash in blood glucose that commonly occurs with most simple carbohydrates like sugars and starches.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Fat Fueled Family Sign up for Muscle Intelligence Follow Fat Fueled Family YouTube Follow Danny Vega Instagram Listen to the Fat Fueled Family Podcast Read The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance Check out The Ketovangelist Listen to Benjamin Bikman - 'Insulin vs. Glucagon: The relevance of dietary protein' Read More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About Protein & Gluconeogenesis Listen to Ryan Lowery | Building Muscle on Keto | Keto Done The Right Way: KKP 39 Read The Introduction to SuperStarch   Find SuperStarch Join the Keto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00     // F O L L O W instagram | @thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2B1NXKW f facebook | /thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2BVvvW6 twitter | @thebenazadi http://bit.ly/2USE0so email | ben@ketokamp.com   Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. Brendan Vermeire | Weight Loss Resistance, Leaky Gut Epidemic, Women & Weight Loss: KKP 69

Brendan Vermeire | Weight Loss Resistance, Leaky Gut Epidemic, Women & Weight Loss: KKP 69

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 69 with Brendan Vermiere   Today, I am blessed to have here with me Practitioner, Founder, and Owner of Metabolic Solutions LLC, Brendan Dean Vermeire. Brendan has always been an extremely motivated individual and grew up active in martial arts and wrestling among dabbling in other activities.   At a young age, he realized the importance of fitness and nutrition. Brendan felt empowered by the idea that he had control over his health and physique. Brendan enlisted in the United States Navy for the prestigious SEAL program. Unfortunately, his SEAL aspirations were cut short due to an inguinal hernia that led to a medical discharge.   Brendan transitioned into competitive bodybuilding and started personal training and nutrition coaching at the age of 19. When he started in the industry, he had the pleasure of working with experienced professionals with a vast array of backgrounds and education. Brendan was fortunate enough to gain exposure to many modalities and areas of science.   Being an extremely motivated individual, that exposure has set him on a path to learning as much as he can to optimize human health, happiness, and performance. There is nothing more rewarding to me than being able to help individuals attain a level of wellness they never thought possible.   In this episode, Brendan explains the difference between health and athletic goals. Exercise is a big piece of the puzzle; however, it isn’t the most significant piece. Then, Brendan describes how he feels to have the privilege to lecture medical doctors on functional medicine – it’s a millennial movement. Later, Brendan says that women make up a majority of his clients and reveals the mindset shift that needs to take place to lose weight and become healthy. Tune in to hear Brendan explain the fundamentals, the relationship between weight-loss resistance and inflammation, and leaky gut.   Fresh Meal Plan - use code: BENAZ Join theKeto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00     [08:50] Difference Between Athletic Goals and Health Goals     Brendan knew that he wanted to run lab tests and help people reach their ultimate health goals. However, there is so much in-between on becoming healthy. “You have to get healthy to get into shape.” Cater your exercise regimen to your current physiology. Fitness is essential, yet not the biggest piece of the puzzle.   [11:00] Lecturing to Medical Doctors Brendan started in fitness and nutrition. Functional medicine is an extremely popular thing right now. However, there is no such thing as a doctor of functional medicine - there is no standard of education in this field. Millennials will be leading the functional medicine movement. Enrollment into naturopathic medical school is going down. Functional medicine is a free-for-all. Brendan thinks he has a lot of valuable insight starting as a professional trainer. He sees the full spectrum and all the errors in the system.   [14:55] The Holistic Savage   Brandan finally got into the social media game. You have to put yourself out there if you want something to happen. Brandan didn’t want to be seen as a bodybuilder even though he’s done loads of bodybuilding shows. He is so much more than a bodybuilder. His goal is to elevate the vibrations of consciousness and move people towards a more healthy direction for the sake of the planet. The holistic savage has become its own brand.   [19:10] Self-Awareness about Becoming Introverted If you’re not taking care of yourself, then you can’t serve to the best of your ability. Brendan takes time to recharge. If you are in the health field, then most likely, you are a giver. You need to fill your own cup before you can fill others.   [20:50] Overcomplicating Everything Brendan is so deep into the health rabbit hole. There is a vast education gap from standard American to the complexities of holistic medicine. At the end of the day, it doesn’t need to be that complicated. We need more general applications. It wouldn’t be constructive for somebody to hyper monitor their state of ketosis. We have never had so much information readily available all the time. There is no magic formula.   [23:20] Starting with the Fundamentals FDN – functional diagnostic nutrition. Brendan doesn’t see any other schools focusing on clinical holistic health coaches. Chronic diseases are a result of our lifestyles. We need to cut down our radiation. Medication and supplements should be as needed, not mandatory.   [26:30] Women and Weight-Loss Women are more health-conscious and care more about their health. Many women suffer from hormone imbalance and weight-loss resistance. Stress and toxins drive a lot of it. Eating a standard American diet is a big issue that Brendan sees. When people think they need to get in shape – they focus on diet and exercise. Plus, they are fueling the process with self-loathing and a sense of inadequacy. Step one: fuel the health building journey out of unconditional self-love. Practice self-love more regularly. We all judge ourselves – let’s start accepting ourselves and judging less harshly. Loving ourselves enough to have the discipline to practice self-love. Create space for yourself to heal, then apply the fundamental principles. The health and fitness industry uses their marketing by asking if we are unhappy with the way we look. Sleep needs to be a priority.   [31:40] What’s Wrong with Eating Less and Moving More Brendan got so sick of his relationship with food. He went back to basics and made his life easier. He said he would eat whenever he wanted with some rules: it has to be real food. Everything comes back to the mind. We need to challenge our belief system and the story that we are telling ourselves. Start with self-awareness, self-love, and eating real food. “The mind is the most powerful thing in the body.” Counting your calories is a big distraction from the things that actually matter.   [34:50] The Relationship Between Weight-Loss Resistance and Inflammation What drives disease? Ultimately it’s inflammation and oxidative stress. They go hand-in-hand and are the destructive processes that lead to disease. Have some kind of objective assessment to determine these two variables. Most women have autoimmunity activity in their bodies. Just because you haven’t been diagnosed doesn’t mean autoimmunity isn’t occurring. Autoimmunity is a process where the immune system starts destroying our own tissues. Ultimately, it’s a gut health destruction and a trigger that’s confusing the immune system. If you add up the cases of autoimmunity – it would outrank cancer. All types of cancer are represented by “cancer.” Whereas with autoimmunity, every disease is looked at separately.   [41:35] Determining Inflammation and Oxidative Stress What’s triggering these? Environment, lifestyle, food, bugs, and toxins. “We are more microbe than human.” Brendan is working with a lab to bring on inflammation and oxidative stress test to the market. Right now, there isn’t a test to bring both of those answers at a decent price point. As we work through a health program, we should see those numbers go down. Brendan’s favorite way to test for these is on a bunch of different markers on various tests.   [45:30] Leaky Gut If you swallow dirty lake water, there are all sorts of bugs in that water. However, there should be a barrier in our gut that protects us. If that barrier is broken, it leaves us susceptible to these bugs. Gluten will trigger leaky gut.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Check out Metabolic Solutions LLC Listen to The Holistic Savage Podcast Follow Brendan Vermiere LinkedIn Instagram Pinterest Twitter Email VermeireConsulting@gmail.com Visit the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Website Fresh Meal Plan - use code: BENAZ Join theKeto Kamp Academy  WatchKeto Kamp on YouTube  $39 Bottle of Olive Oil for $1.00     // F O L L O W instagram | @thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2B1NXKW f acebook | /thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2BVvvW6 twitter | @thebenazadi http://bit.ly/2USE0so email | ben@ketokamp.com   Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only.
