Today, I am blessed to have here with me Tracy Duhs. Helping people activate their vitality and feel alive has been Tracy’s lifelong mission. Growing up in a missionary home cultivated her profound sense of compassion and her desire to educate on the simple foundations needed to look and feel our best. By the time she was 15, Tracy had already begun her undergraduate education in medicine. At 16, Tracy shadowed a missionary doctor working in an indigenous village in Guatemala, where she gained hands-on surgical and medical training. The time she spent there opened her eyes and enlarged her heart, to the need for wholistic wellness education and foundations. After her experience in Guatemala, Tracy decided to forgo a traditional allopathic medical career in favor of one that focused on regenerative care and education.When Tracy became a mother, her professional path took a personal turn. Her first child, Grace, was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroid and alopecia universalis at the age of two. Emboldened by her daughter’s struggle, Tracy began her journey into hydration education by pursuing a PhD in the field of biogenetics as well as shadowing doctors from all around the globe to learn their different approaches to disease.It was through these experiences that Tracy became passionate about hydration as she learned the power hydration has to transform overall health and wellness in all people. Today, Tracy works as a modern wellness advocate specializing in the restorative powers of intelligent hydration.She has parlayed her wealth of experience and knowledge into a multi-dimensional career in wellness advocacy and education, starting with her podcast, HYDRATE. [00:30] Tracy Explains Why The World Needs To Learn More About Hydrating 9% of the molecules in our body are water molecules. If we're 98.9% water molecules, why is there not more talk about hydration and water? Tracy has dedicated her life to understanding hydrating. She loves to bring people together so that we can understand hydration at a higher level. [02:30] Drinking Water Isn’t The Only Way You’ll Stay Hydrated The chemistry of the water is going to determine how your biochemical processes absorb it. Also, the health of your microbiome will determine how you process water. If you’re moving, your body will play a part in hydrating. Sunlight and nutrition will also assist with activating water. [04:30] Does The pH of Water Really Matter When It Comes To Hydration? The pH of water is irrelevant. Instead, we should focus on the constituents of what we are ingesting. Anything that you're ingesting, you want to look at what's inside of that ingredient. Electrolytes are minerals in a liquid solution. We need electrolytes for water to move throughout bodies. [09:30] Do You Live Near A Mountain Spring? If Not, Tracy Gives Tips On Getting Water Tracy is not fortunate enough to live next to a mountain spring. So, she can't go grab water from a mountain spring every single day. Tracy has tested her tap water. There are chemical contaminations in her water. So, she has a reverse osmosis system in her home. It filters out the chemical contamination. Later, Tracy adds minerals to her reverse osmosis water. Now, the water can become structured. [12:50] Why Is Everyone So Dehydrated In Our Modern World? From birth, we are not drinking the right water, and we are not drinking enough. Also, we are living sedentary lifestyles. Plus, we're sitting under artificial lighting all day, and we're not getting enough of the full spectrum sunlight outside. The lack of minerals, sunlight, and water leads to dehydration. [21:20] How Grounding and Sunshine Can Play A Critical Role In Hydration We're energetic beings, and we need to charge ourselves. At night, we plug in our phones and computers. We need to do the same thing with our bodies. Go outside and get sunshine during sunrise and sunset. The red light nourishment will be critical for your body. Take your shoes off when you’re outside. It will help relax your body and charge your body. If your cells aren't charged, it doesn't matter how much water you intake; that water isn't able to do its job. [29:55] Hydrogen Water Can Help Reduce Inflammatory Responses Hydrogen is neutral, and it can get into the cell very easily. It's the smallest atom. You can't overdose on it, and you can't hurt yourself with it. Hydrogen water helps modulate inflammation in the body. From Tracy’s personal experience, hydrogen water helps relieve her of brain fog. As Doug approached 40, however, he noticed he was putting on a little weight each year and, no matter how hard he trained, Doug was not able to get the weight off again. In the end, he was always injured and hating running and life itself.   When Doug was first introduced to the concept of the Ketogenic / Banting lifestyle, he could not believe that an athlete could function without carbohydrates. However, as an engineer at heart, Doug started reading all the research, and he found that it made total sense. Plus, it explained all the issues he was having, including the things Doug struggled with back when he was running well.   In this episode, Doug Reynolds opens the show describing his experience gaining weight and then losing it with the keto diet. He was inspired, so he started LowCarbsUSA and describes the lifechanging conferences they hold each year. Doug would run 55-mile races in Africa. As he aged, Doug started to pick up a few pounds of weight every year. At one point, Doug stood on the scale and was horrified to see he was 35 pounds over his ideal weight. Without any resources, Doug tried the keto diet with trial and error. His inflammation cleared up, he lost the weight, and he stopped snoring at night.   [11:15] LowCarbsUSA® Conferences Doug’s first conference far exceeded his expectations. Every conference, they end up building a community and a culture within their organization. They also live stream all of their events – it is available to people online. The live stream is cheaper, and you will not have to travel. However, the vibe and the comradery are lifechanging.   [20:00] Standard of Care Doctors have many challenges suggesting keto to their patients. The standard of care is not a document. You don’t learn it at college. It is a consensus of practitioners in a similar environment with similar training what they actually do in practice. There is now a document guiding physicians on how to utilize a low-carb diet with their patients. Eventually, practitioners who do not acknowledge this diet as a viable way to change a health outcome, they may have to face a malpractice lawsuit.   [35:30] The Conference in Indonesia The audience was in tears when they heard of a boy who had a certain condition and was told he would never walk again. After the boy and his parents started the keto diet, he was able to walk again. Not only did that miracle happen, but his parents also lost weight, and their health improved.   [42:55] Practicing Gratitude Doug is grateful for finding out about the keto diet at the age of 51.   [43:40] Doug’s Definition of Perfect Health Weight is not part of the definition. It comes along for the ride. Doug started keto because of weight. He only learned about the metabolic benefits as he went along. Perfect health is all your biomarkers being where they need to be. That does not include LDL. If you are not eating carbs, then LDL is not an issue. People focus way too much on weight. No one ever dies from being fat; they die from the underlying metabolic issues that made them fat. Society is so focused on weight. If you get yourself metabolically healthy, the weight will come. Be patient. It doesn't matter if you are eating a ketogenic, low carb high fat diet, I still wouldn't recommend keeping track of these calories because its a distraction to what really matters; the hormones and the metabolism. Food is NOT just about calories; food is information. When we eat food, every bite signals a metabolic response. 💯 . We can choose to eat high quality foods that will elicit a healthy metabolic response, or we can choose to eat poor quality foods that will elicit a negative metabolic response; the choice is yours. 🤔 . The human body doesn't give a crap about calories! ✊🏻 . There's no mechanism or receptor sites in the human body that keeps track of calories. So why the heck do we count them?🤔 . 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a calculator. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a bank account. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a math equation 👉🏻The human body is a complex chemistry lab 🙌🏻 It's time to stop focusing on the quantity, and start focusing on the quality of the foods we are eating.🙏 . She also guides her students on how to seamlessly integrate this topic into their practices and to leverage their education to distinguish themselves in their fields.   Lara has worked with thousands of practitioners in over 26 countries in her online programs to help them understand the links between chemicals in our daily lives and their links to chronic health conditions like metabolic disorders, thyroid disease, fertility, and behavioral problems in children.   Through her flagship course, Talking Toxins, Lara gives health professionals like nutritionists, health coaches, ND’s, RN’s and chiropractors, as well as healthy-minded consumers a deep education on where these toxic exposures are happening, along with actionable steps to take. However, Lara never thought she would pursue anything professionally in the space. After eight years in another career, several people suggested she become a health coach. Lara got certified as a health coach. All of her clients were coming to her for weight loss advice. Some of Lara’s clients had terrific results, whereas others had no results at all. What was she missing? Lara dove into the literature around resistance to weight loss. Lara learned about chemicals that mess with our metabolism and cause resistance weight loss.   [14:15] Why You May Have Resistance to Weight Loss Genetic differences may predispose you to specific health conditions. Whereas, other people may not manifest these health conditions. For instance, two people who are smokers can have very different outcomes.   [15:20] About the PPAR Pathway When PPAR gets activated, it changes the programming of our fat cells that lead toward weight gain. Our cells increase their capacity for fat storage. PPAR can also increase our number of fat cells. It happens at a cellular level completely absent from diet and exercise. This is referred to as chemically induced weight gain. Chemicals can make us fat. Antidepressants cause weight gain – it is a well-established side effect.   [19:15] Fasting with Toxins We are burning fat while fasting. Normally, we are dumping our toxins into our fat. When we start losing weight rapidly, the toxins are dumped into our bloodstream. Our liver has to try and keep up with this load. Unless your liver is working perfectly, your liver can still be overloaded. People who have undergone rapid weight loss have shown a thousandfold increase of toxins flooding their systems. People often will get so sick that their hair even falls out. We want to be careful when we are fasting or losing weight. Toxins will desperately search for fat. Your metabolism cannot get rid of toxins – they get recycled back into the system. The body will rebound by adding fat to house the toxins.   [22:15] Ways to Support the Liver Anything that supports the liver will be your friend on this journey. Lara’s goal is to dial back the exposure and amp up what our body is getting rid of. We can do this by supporting the liver. Take activated charcoal – you need to know how to take a binder because it is a whole process. Sweat every day if you can in a sauna. Law enforcement is using sweat patches to see whether or not there are narcotics in someone’s system. Sweat works! Some toxins will exit through sweat rather than any other pathway. You can measure chemicals in urine, but there are still toxins under your skin. A detox should be done every single day. We just want to support this process in all of the ways possible.   [30:20] Chemicals to Look Out For BPA or bisphenol A can be found in cash register receipts, canned foods, the lining of canned foods, hard plastic materials. They are not found in soft plastics. Marketing from these companies is really misleading. If you look at a Ziploc bag, they all say BPA free – it never contained BPA. They manipulate the consumer’s lack of understanding. BPA is only one chemical in a family of chemicals known as bisphenol. BPA got a bad rap in the public arena because a group of mothers saw it was in baby bottles. Companies swapped BPA for BPS – they are nearly identical. Studies about these substitutions are showing they may actually be worse.   [39:45] There Is No Safe Water Bottle Brand Drink out of stainless steel. People don’t want to use as much plastic, so they start reusing their plastic containers. The right thing to do is not to buy plastic. Our foods come packaged in plastic, and we can’t avoid it. Avoid plastic when buying olive oil, coconut oil, and nut butter. There are 4 key things that increase the way chemicals migrate out of plastic: Heat Oil Acidity Abrasion If you have oily or fatty foods – it will increase the number of chemicals leaking out of the plastic and into the foods.   [45:35] Cleaning Our Indoor Air Household cleaners cause a bigger percentage of air pollution than automobiles. You need to clean up what is happening in your house. Breathing this stuff every single day is harmful. House dust is actually lead, heavy metals, pesticides, and non-stick coating. These chemicals settle in the dust in our house. Dusting is so important to eliminate these harmful chemicals.   [56:20] One Action Step at a Time When people come to this conversation and feel overwhelmed they need to take one action step. You can’t occupy a space of being proactive and being overwhelmed. Action not overwhelm. Start doing stuff even if it’s really small. Your first step can be visiting a sauna every day. It is easy to become obsessed with this topic and be afraid of touching anything. We do not need to be afraid of touching a plastic container. Empire State building state.     Number 3: EAT FOR YOUR CYCLE   Hormones will become tanked. Dr. Mindy Pelz shared her story about this. When progesterone gets low, you experience more anxiety and stress.    A women’s cycle goes anywhere from 28-30 day cycles. From day 1 to day 14 women make a little bit of estrogen and very little progesterone, but once they ovulate then thats when those hormones kick in and the body needs to have certain foods to make specifically progesterone is the anti stress hormone. So what are those foods? They are NOT keto foods.   They are beans, tropical fruits, citrus fruits, white potatoes, squash, and wild rice.   On day 14 start thinking about not fasting and keto as much, shift to eating those healthy carbs. Where it really becomes crucial is at day 21, about 1 week before the cycle. Don’t do a water fast, flex out of keto and focus on eating those foods.    Once your cycle starts its so easy to do keto and fasting, and it helps with cramping.   The body craves these carbohydrates because its telling you something!   Progesterone will shed the uterine lining. Once you see any spotting have those healthy carbohydrates.   Post menopausal?    Post menopausal women have low estrogen and progesterone.    So its important to flex out with those healthy carbohydrates from time to time.   The 5-1-1 rule is idea for post menopausal women.     Dr. Dom D'Agostino's study on ketogenic cycling and the benefits of it (they got back into ketosis 50% faster! // R E S O U R C E S . Researcher Gary Taubes explains the real cause of obesity, and why the calories in vs calories out advice does not work. Gary Taubes is an investigative science and health journalist and co-founder of the non-profit Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI.org). He is the author of Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It and Good Calories, Bad Calories (The Diet Delusion in the UK). Taubes is the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research, and has won numerous other awards for his journalism. These include the International Health Reporting Award from the Pan American Health Organization and the National Association of Science Writers Science in Society Journalism Award, which he won in 1996, 1999 and 2001. (He is the first print journalist to win this award three times.) Taubes graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an S.B. degree in applied physics, and received an M.S. degree in engineering from Stanford University (1978) and in journalism from Columbia University (1981).
