It will cause you to burn excess body fat and improve your overall health. But there’s one important caveat. A constant, unrelenting state of ketosis—in which your body is burning its own fat for fuel—is obviously unsustainable, because eventually you’d have no more fat. In this chapter, we move into the Flex pillar, which will allow you to maintain your Keto lifestyle month after month, year after year. Four Reasons Why Prolonged Ketosis Is Counterproductive My mantra is, “Lose the excess fat; treasure the necessary fat.” Ketosis is a brilliant strategy for accomplishing the first goal. As for the second goal, prolonged ketosis doesn’t have an automatic shut-off valve. If you remain in state of constant ketosis, burning your own fat, then your body will keep doing that as long as it must to stay alive. If necessary to preserve life, once your fat is gone, various bodily functions will be shut off or minimized. This process of shutting down will continue until Mr. Death knocks on your door and says, “Sorry, buddy—time’s up.” No one wants that. To ensure that you’re well informed, let’s review some of the bad things that can happen if you go too far with ketosis. Fat Burning Slows Down As levels of body fat drop, your primal brain, whom we thought we had trained to accept a high-fat diet and fasting, will be aroused and will begin to object. Why and when will this happen? Your primal brain, that eternal watchdog, will sense that your reserves of fat are becoming depleted. Remembering those long periods of deprivation thousands of years ago, your primal brain will sound the alarm: The fat supply is running low! It will issue the command that your body must preserve its precious fuel. In response, your body will actually slow down fat burning—all for the sake of survival! When you stay in ketosis too long, the body starts to rebel, and conserve its fuel. A good analogy is if you lived out in the woods and you had stored 500 logs of firewood to heat your cabin for the winter. These were your reserves, because you could still go out and chop more firewood. So if you had to dip into these reserves, you wouldn’t be worried. But now it’s early March, and snow still covers the ground. It’s been a tough winter and you haven’t harvested many trees, and you see that you’ve got only 50 logs left. That’s a very low supply! Suddenly you’re reluctant to use them because you don’t want to run out. When you had 500 logs, you didn’t care about burning them. The same thing happens with your body fat. This is why when you stay low carbohydrate for too long, your body will slow down fat metabolism. And you know what? This is a good thing. There is a big difference between losing excess fat and losing all your fat. You want to lose excess fat. But your body needs a small amount of fat, and your primal brain is smart to insist that you meet this minimal requirement. Thyroid Problems Hormone production is often a function of a “chain of command,” as orders are passed from one organ to another, until the desired outcome is achieved. The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, which are located in the brain, help control the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your throat, just below the Adam’s apple. To provide their direction to the thyroid, the hypothalamus releases thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). When the hypothalamus and pituitary are working normally, they respond when: Thyroid hormone levels are low, so they secrete more TRH and TSH, which stimulates the thyroid to make more hormones. Thyroid hormone levels are too high, so they secrete less TRH and TSH, which reduces hormone production by the thyroid. The thyroid gland uses iodine from food to make two thyroid hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The primary secretory product is inactive thyroxine (T4), which is a prohormone of triiodothyronine (T3). T4 is converted to T3 peripherally by tissues with high blood flow, including the liver and kidneys. In the brain, T4 is converted to active T3 by type 2 deiodinase produced by glial cells. The thyroid stores T3 and T4, and releases them as they are needed. These two thyroid hormones function in almost every cell in your body, and play a fundamental role in regulating your metabolism and maintaining your resting energy expenditure—that is, the energy you burn just to keep functioning while sitting on the sofa. Diet can influence thyroid hormone levels, and prolonged ketosis and severe calorie restriction can lead to reduced thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, which is a mechanism to ensure survival in response to perceived famine. The goal is to slow metabolism, preserve energy, and preserve vital organs. T4 is the inactive form of thyroid, it needs to be converted to T3 which is the active form used by the cells. Do you know which hormone helps with this conversion? Insulin. Low thyroid hormones cause a drop in levels of insulin, the hormone needed to transport sugar from the blood to different cells throughout the body. Chronic low insulin levels slow down cellular function, including muscle contractions and basic brain function. Over longer periods of time, low insulin levels compromise this T4 to T3 thyroid hormone conversion. Testosterone Deficiency Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein made by your liver. It binds tightly to three sex hormones found in both men and women—estrogen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and testosterone. SHBG carries these three hormones throughout your blood. SHBG controls the amount of testosterone that your body tissues can use. Too little testosterone in men and too much testosterone in women can cause problems. Factors such as sex, age, obesity, liver disease, and hypothyroidism can change the level of SHBG in your blood. Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid produces an insufficient amount of thyroid hormones, which can happen with prolonged ketosis. What I’ve seen reviewing lab work over the years is too much SHBG leads to lower testosterone levels, and not enough SHBG leads to an increase in estrogen; both can be problematic for men and women. Long term ketosis can lead to either of these. Leptin Reset Leptin is your “stop eating!” hormone that plays an instrumental role in your hunger and weight management. It comes from the Greek word ”leptos,” meaning “thin.” Fat cells produce leptin in proportion to levels of body fat: the more fat cells you have, the more leptin they make. When your body fat increases, your leptin levels go up. Your brain senses the increase in leptin, and thinks, “Okay, we’ve got enough fat in reserve, so we can stop eating.” Thus, you eat less and burn more. Conversely, when you don’t eat, your body fat decreases, leading your leptin levels to drop. Your brain, sensing a shortage of leptin, thinks, “Hmm, we’re low on fat reserves. Better find some food!” At that point, you eat more and burn less. This negative feedback loop is similar to the control mechanisms for many physiological functions, such as body temperature, breathing, and blood pressure. A properly working leptin system tells your brain that you have enough energy stored in your fat cells to engage in normal, everyday metabolic processes. It leads to better brain function, memory, metabolic performance, mental sharpness, and coordination, and it can even affect the regulation of mood and emotion. This is wonderful—except that many overweight people suffer from leptin resistance. They have plenty of blood leptin, but the brain doesn’t recognize it. Despite the abundance of leptin, the brain thinks there is too little leptin—and orders the body to keep eating! This is obviously a bad situation. What can cause it? Several potential mechanisms behind leptin resistance have been identified. Free fatty acids. Having elevated free fatty acids in your bloodstream may increase fat metabolites in your brain, and interfere with leptin signaling. Inflammation. Inflammatory signaling in your hypothalamus could be a cause of leptin resistance. Having consistently high leptin. It may be that your brain gets accustomed to a constant flood of leptin churned out by your fat cells, and becomes “numb” to it. So, what happens when you follow a low-carb keto diet that puts you in long-term ketosis? Perhaps paradoxically, many people do not suffer from an increase in appetite, as you might expect from falling levels of leptin. It’s complicated, but the short version of the story is that leptin levels will drop, which would normally signal your brain to start eating. But something else happens—your brain becomes more sensitive to the effects of leptin, so a smaller amount of leptin packs more punch. In addition, the brain’s response to leptin is inhibited by inflammation, resulting in increased leptin resistance. Obesity increases inflammation, which increase the brain’s “numbness” to high levels of leptin. Inflammation is dramatically reduced by sustained nutritional ketosis. The reduction in leptin resistance due to reduced inflammation adds to the brain’s heightened sensitivity to leptin. In other words, on a well-formulated ketogenic diet the brain perceives a greater satiety response to less leptin. This explains the paradox as to why we see a decrease in appetite with nutritional ketosis. In order to achieve a sustained state of ketosis, you need to occasionally boost your levels of leptin and send the signal to your brain that higher levels of leptin are normal, and that you need to keep eating. This is another reason why the “flex” part of Keto Flex Lifestyle is so important. We never want your brain to think you’re starving—but we also don’t want it to forget about eating! You can train high intensity during this schedule. Its flexible and its not necessarily cutting calories or eating less, it is eating less often.   2: OMAD   I like this approach for someone who has 20 or more pounds to lose. Just don’t do this for too long. We don’t want too much autophagy.    3: 5-1-1 Rule   I LOVE this rule. Most people will thrive with this longterm.   4: Block Fasting   I like this for someone with autoimmune. Someone who is overweight, and for preventative purposes.    My definition of block fasting is 3 or more days. Maximum autophagy. How you break the fast is just as important as the fast itself. I have a video on YouTube called how to break your block fast I will put this in the cards.     5: Dry Fasting   3 to 1 autophagy. There is a hard dry fast and a soft dry fast. USE CAUTION.     Bonus tip: Always break your fast with protein and fat. Bonus tip: I don’t recommend much fasting the 5-7 days leading up to your monthly cycle. ▸ [FREE] 🔥E-BOOK: "The Keto Kickstart Guide: 4 Steps to Burning Fat Instead of Sugar" | http://www.ketokickstartguide.com .  Get a $39 bottle of the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil club for a buck: http://www.ketokampoliveoil.com . Shay Rowbottom, Eat Fats & Organ Meats, Problems With The Vegan Diet, Self Love, LinkedIn: KKP 63

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 63 with Shay Rowbottom!     Today, I have here with me, Shay Rowbottom, influencer, and content creator. Shay has created millions of dollars, millions of followers, and billions of video views for her clients.    Shay Rowbottom is the co-founder and former COO of a Facebook agency that worked with companies like Petco, Yahoo, Verlo, and dozens more in creating content and devising content strategies for social media.   Since joining the LinkedIn platform in May of 2018, Shay has grown to over 130,000 followers, garnered over 20 million views on her content, and generated seven figures in sales for partnering media companies. Now, she’s ready to share her strategies with you and produce the same kind of results for your brand.   In this episode, Shay Rowbottom explains her various health issues growing up, including her permanent cough, acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay’s doctor prescribed her to a low-carb diet, and breathing exercises – all of her health problems were magically gone in a matter of weeks. Then, Shay discusses the many issues with the vegan diet and other food trends in the United States. Stay tuned to hear Shay explain her LinkedIn success and why you need to create a LinkedIn profile!   [05:00] About Shay Rowbottom   Shay’s mother was very conscious of sugar products and knew that low-fat products were not ideal. At age eleven, Shay became a vegetarian. For four years, Shay did not eat meat (or vegetables)! Her meals consisted of bagels and pizza. At age fifteen, Shay was sick and sluggish. Shay’s immune system was compromised – she had a permanent cough. On top of this, she had acne, digestive problems, asthma, and eczema. Shay saw a doctor who promised she would cure her health issues. The first thing she did was put her on a strict diet of no gluten, dairy, or eggs. Plus, Shay was prescribed breathing exercises. Within two weeks, Shay’s asthma was gone. “My body runs best without carbs.”   [13:50] Eating Fats and Organ Meats Organ meats were a total wake up call for Shay. We are not supposed to be eating muscle meat. The heart and liver are where the nutrients are. Beef is delicious – she eats 100% grass-fed pasture-raised red meat. “I’m a beef girl.” All the minerals are in the organ meat. Shay loves the beef heart.   [16:45] Problems with the Vegan Diet The commitment is so damaging. In one month, you will feel amazing and decide to commit to it for life. When you start craving meat, your commitment will make you ignore the signs of your body. When you commit, it makes it so hard to get out of the lifestyle. Anytime you define yourself with a diet; you put yourself in a box. If you eat the right animal products, you won’t be contributing negatively to the environment. Any extreme is not good. People get too caught up in the lifestyle. Most vegans will return to eating meat in their lifetime. Your genetics will determine how long it will take for you to get sick.   [23:20] Alcohol Cleanse Shay did one month with no alcohol. She never felt better! Then, Shay extended her cleanse to four months. It was such a pleasant experience, and she ended up changing her relationships with alcohol. Sobriety also helps with health. Keto and wine are no fun! Alcohol will raise your glucose and knock you out of ketosis.   [27:55] Bad Health Trends The food in the United States isn’t really food. We all go to these restaurants and eat these foods that aren’t real. These foods are killing us slowly. We are a depressed society – we have a lot of issues with unresolved mass trauma. It has created a strong culture of addiction. “We don’t make it easy for people to heal.” At the end of the day, we can blame the system. However, we can also blame the market. Money speaks, and our dollars are buying sugar.   [31:00] Vegetable Oils Find restaurants that don’t cook with vegetable oils. If we change where we put our dollars, then we can make a big difference. Tell restaurants you aren’t going to eat foods with vegetable oils. Create your own life. When you love and respect yourself, you don’t want to put harmful foods in your body. “People are sick and tired of being sick and tired.”   [33:50] Self-Love A lot of us get away from our intuition as a kid. Shay trusts her gut. She listens to it and follows her gut and knows how to set boundaries. Shay still does the breathing exercises that she learned as a kid. Plus, Shay is easy with herself and forgives herself often.   [35:20] Get on LinkedIn Shay got on LinkedIn to attract leads to her business. LinkedIn is the best platform to reach educated people with money. Plus, it gives the most generous reach with video content. You’ll get the cheapest views with the most educated audience. Shay coaches Ben on LinkedIn. LowCarbUSA Founder Doug Reynolds, Ketogenic Diet - The NEW Standard of Care: KKP 60

LowCarbUSA Founder Doug Reynolds, Ketogenic Diet - The NEW Standard of Care: KKP 60

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 60 with Doug Reynolds!     Today, I a have Doug Reynolds, founder of LowCarbUSA®, a platform for scientists, entrepreneurs, and the medical community to share their research surrounding the low carbohydrate and ketogenic lifestyles.   Founded in 2015, LowCarbUSA® is an organization focused on dietary education and support by hosting scientific conferences, providing online coaching, a comprehensive library of scientific papers supporting the way of eating, and a worldwide database of 'Low Carb Friendly' healthcare providers and nutritionists.   In Doug Reynold's early '30s, he had run almost a hundred marathons and ultras and could eat pretty much anything he liked. As Doug approached 40, however, he noticed he was putting on a little weight each year and, no matter how hard he trained, Doug was not able to get the weight off again. In the end, he was always injured and hating running and life itself.   When Doug was first introduced to the concept of the Ketogenic / Banting lifestyle, he could not believe that an athlete could function without carbohydrates. However, as an engineer at heart, Doug started reading all the research, and he found that it made total sense. Plus, it explained all the issues he was having, including the things Doug struggled with back when he was running well.   In this episode, Doug Reynolds opens the show describing his experience gaining weight and then losing it with the keto diet. He was inspired, so he started LowCarbsUSA and describes the lifechanging conferences they hold each year. Plus, Doug explains how he is committed to helping to reverse the current consensus on a diet here in the US and around the world. The consequences of the governmental dietary policies introduced in 1977 have been catastrophic, and it's time we all took a stand! Tune in! Become a member of the Keto Kamp Academy today! Fresh Pressed Olive Oil: http://www.ketokampoliveoil.com Purity Coffee: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com   [00:15] About Doug Reynolds   Doug was a distance runner; he thought he was bulletproof. Doug would run 55-mile races in Africa. As he aged, Doug started to pick up a few pounds of weight every year. At one point, Doug stood on the scale and was horrified to see he was 35 pounds over his ideal weight. Without any resources, Doug tried the keto diet with trial and error. His inflammation cleared up, he lost the weight, and he stopped snoring at night.   [11:15] LowCarbsUSA® Conferences Doug’s first conference far exceeded his expectations. Every conference, they end up building a community and a culture within their organization. They also live stream all of their events – it is available to people online. The live stream is cheaper, and you will not have to travel. However, the vibe and the comradery are lifechanging.   [20:00] Standard of Care Doctors have many challenges suggesting keto to their patients. The standard of care is not a document. You don’t learn it at college. It is a consensus of practitioners in a similar environment with similar training what they actually do in practice. There is now a document guiding physicians on how to utilize a low-carb diet with their patients. Eventually, practitioners who do not acknowledge this diet as a viable way to change a health outcome, they may have to face a malpractice lawsuit.   [35:30] The Conference in Indonesia The audience was in tears when they heard of a boy who had a certain condition and was told he would never walk again. After the boy and his parents started the keto diet, he was able to walk again. Not only did that miracle happen, but his parents also lost weight, and their health improved.   [42:55] Practicing Gratitude Doug is grateful for finding out about the keto diet at the age of 51.   [43:40] Doug’s Definition of Perfect Health Weight is not part of the definition. It comes along for the ride. Doug started keto because of weight. He only learned about the metabolic benefits as he went along. Perfect health is all your biomarkers being where they need to be. That does not include LDL. If you are not eating carbs, then LDL is not an issue. People focus way too much on weight. No one ever dies from being fat; they die from the underlying metabolic issues that made them fat. Society is so focused on weight. If you get yourself metabolically healthy, the weight will come. Be patient. Weight loss is a side-effect of perfect health.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Doug’s Website Read his blog Read the Clinical Guidelines Document Connect with Doug Reynolds: Twitter Facebook Pinterest YouTube Instagram Attend the LowCarbUSA conference in Boca Raton, FL. Keto Calorie Count for Weight Loss | Why Tracking Calories to Lose Weight Doesn’t Work - KKP: 59

On episode 59 of The Keto Kamp Podcast we discuss why counting calories is a distraction and hardly ever works. Here is what you'll discover in this episode: Why quality over quantity is more important Why nutritionist and dietitians promote this calories in vs calories out approach The real key to longterm weight loss And so much more! . 🎓Want to become a keto and fasting pro? For years I told my clients to track every calories. The result, 99.99% failure rate. It doesn't matter if you are eating a ketogenic, low carb high fat diet, I still wouldn't recommend keeping track of these calories because its a distraction to what really matters; the hormones and the metabolism. Food is NOT just about calories; food is information. When we eat food, every bite signals a metabolic response. 💯 . We can choose to eat high quality foods that will elicit a healthy metabolic response, or we can choose to eat poor quality foods that will elicit a negative metabolic response; the choice is yours. 🤔 . There's a significant difference between 500 calories of a kale salmon salad, and 500 calories of gummy bears. The former will elicit a healthier metabolic response, the latter will cause hormonal disruption, rollercoaster energy levels and weight gain (symptom). 🤬 . They are the same exact calories. The human body doesn't give a crap about calories! ✊🏻 . There's no mechanism or receptor sites in the human body that keeps track of calories. So why the heck do we count them?🤔 . 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a calculator. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a bank account. 👉🏻 The human body is NOT a math equation 👉🏻The human body is a complex chemistry lab 🙌🏻 It's time to stop focusing on the quantity, and start focusing on the quality of the foods we are eating.🙏 . Remember, every bite we take signals a metabolic response. Food is information. Send the best information to your body. .
