Excessive Force: The Ena Farely Story

Dr. Ena Farley has lived very happily in her home in Brockport, New York for over 50 years. She clearly articulates her wish to remain living in her home, and remain part of her community. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies used force on her to remove her from her home and she was put into a facility in Irondequoit, New York, which is 40 minutes away from her life, her friends and her church in Brockport. The facility will not allow many of her friends or family members to even visit her.

No judge had declared Ena Farley "mentally incompetent" and no doctor had declared her "mentally incompetent." Her son Jonathan Farley, who spoke with her every day for years before she was taken, says that Ena Farley was not "mentally incompetent."

Elder abuse refers to any intentional or negligent act by a caregiver or another person that causes harm or risk of harm to an older adult. This can take many forms, including:

Physical Abuse: Inflicting physical pain or injury.

Emotional Abuse: Causing emotional pain or distress through verbal or non-verbal acts.

Financial Abuse: Misusing or stealing an elder's money or assets.

Neglect: Failing to provide necessary care, leading to harm or risk of harm.

Sexual Abuse: Non-consensual sexual contact of any kind.

Elder abuse can occur in various settings, including homes, nursing facilities, and assisted living environments. It's important to recognize the signs, such as unexplained injuries, withdrawal from social activities, sudden financial changes, or poor living conditions.

If you suspect elder abuse, it's crucial to report it to the appropriate authorities or organizations that can help. Awareness and intervention can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable older adults.

Police brutality refers to the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers against civilians. This can manifest in various forms, including physical violence, verbal abuse, and the misuse of authority. Key aspects of police brutality include:

Excessive Force: Using more force than necessary to handle a situation, which can lead to injury or death.

Racial Profiling: Targeting individuals based on their race or ethnicity rather than on evidence of wrongdoing.

Unjust Arrests: Detaining individuals without proper cause or due process.

Violations of Rights: Disregarding individuals' rights during interactions, such as illegal searches or denying access to legal counsel.

The issue of police brutality has garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly in the context of movements advocating for social justice and reform. Many advocate for increased accountability, better training for officers, and policies aimed at preventing abuse. Communities affected by police brutality often seek justice and reform to ensure fair treatment and protection under the law.
