Breaking the Cycle of Physician Burnout

Breaking the Cycle of Physician Burnout

Burnout is more prevalent among healthcare and health sciences workers, professionals, and trainees than among the general U.S. population. Those working in the healthcare field are more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and job dissatisfaction, which can lead to adverse outcomes for healthcare workers as well as the patients and communities they serve. Evidence shows, however, that effective wellness programming and strong institutional leadership committed to a culture of wellness can make a difference. That's why GW launched the GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals, which is led by Kaylan Baban, MD, MPH, the inaugural chief wellness officer for GW Hospital, GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. An assistant professor of Medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr. Baban is also the director, Lifestyle Medicine Program, at GW Medical Faculty Associates. She joined us on the latest episode of the GW Integrative Medicine podcast to talk about the GWell Center, the need nationally for initiatives that support those working in health care in all capacities, and why this is so personal for her. ◘ Related content 3rd Annual Sung Symposium: Wellness & Longevity http://bit.ly/sung2020 Kaylan Baban, MD, MPH, Tapped to Serve as Chief Wellness Officer for GW’s Medical Enterprise http://bit.ly/2TcHw29 The GWell Center for Healthcare Professionals https://smhs.gwu.edu/wellness/ Wellness Resources for GW Students, Residents, Fellows, Faculty, Staff, & Alumni https://smhs.gwu.edu/wellness/wellness/resources List of Wellness Books, Podcasts, Websites, Courses & Conferences (Curated by Dr. Kaylan Baban) https://guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/mindfulness/booksandmore Clinician Well-Being Knowledge Hub https://nam.edu/clinicianwellbeing/ ◘ Transcript https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/transcript-breaking-cycle-physician-burnout-gw-office-of/?published=t ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
