Hong Kong protests five years after the Umbrella Movement

Millions of mostly young people protest in the streets of Hong Kong and ask for civil liberty rights and democracy. This sounds only all too familiar because the very same happened in 2014. At the fifth anniversary of what has become famous as the 'Umbrella Movement', Researcher Tim Rühlig and Programme Manager Ylva Pettersson from the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI), discuss the similarities and differences of the two movements. What do the protesters ask for? How much support do they find in the Hong Kong population? Why do we see more violence now compared to 2014? What can the international community do? And how will this all end? Is there a risk of a violent crackdown? Tune in to find out.
