Dr Benjamin Bikman, Foods That Help Lower Insulin, Cortisol Effects on The Body, Fasted Exercise: KKP 54

Dr Benjamin Bikman, Foods That Help Lower Insulin, Cortisol Effects on The Body, Fasted Exercise: KKP 54

Today we have Dr. Benjamin Bikman on the Keto Kamp Podcast. Dr. Bikman is a biomedical scientist, professor, and expert on insulin resistance.   Dr. Benjamin Bikman studies diabetes and obesity, and much of what he focuses on is a seemingly obscure condition called insulin resistance. But it’s, in fact, not very obscure at all. Half of all adults in the U.S. have insulin resistance. That means you could have it too, and you don’t know it.   What is insulin resistance? Why did Dr. Benjamin Bikman devote his career to studying something like this? Well, insulin resistance is essentially two things. First of all, some cells in your body aren’t responding very well to the hormone insulin. Second, you have more insulin than you did before, a condition called hyperinsulinemia.   Insulin resistance is at the root of virtually every chronic disease. If we go through the chronic diseases that are killing us today, things like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and certain cancers, what they all have in common is insulin resistance. To varying degrees, insulin resistance is either causing the problem or making it worse.   In this episode, Dr. Bikman and I talk about what inspired him to dedicate his life to researching insulin resistance. First, Dr. Bikman reveals the correlation between air pollution and diabetes. Plus, Dr. Bikman explains how insulin is related to almost every single chronic disease out there. He also describes what type of things you should be eating if your glucose levels are high and what to eat if you are metabolically flexible. Tune in!   Sign up for the Keto Kamp Academy   [08:45] How Dr. Bikman Chose His Profession Bikman realized he has always been fascinated with how the body was affected by exercise. One day, he saw an article in the newspaper about how fat cells secrete hormones. At the time, we only knew about one protein that was emitted from fat cells. Bikman’s graduate thesis focused on obesity. Then, Dr. Bikman did post-doctoral work on insulin resistance. Currently, he has his own lab at BYU and continues to focus on insulin. “I get paid to be curious.”   [12:50] The Correlation Between Air Pollution and Diabetes The correlational evidence is so keen; it warrants further scrutiny. You can take the smallest particles from diesel exhaust – and one week of rodents inhaling the particles - they’re insulin resistance has doubled. It puts in perspective the heavily industrialized countries like India and China. Plus, they are the countries with the most diabetics. Might part of it be the profound air pollution? Runners should get a mask filter if they are living in a heavily polluted area.   [18:45] Focusing on Insulin    Bikman focuses on insulin because the more he learns about obesity, the more the finger points at insulin. Once Dr. Bikman started teaching a class about disease, the more he realized how insulin is part of almost every chronic disease. Inadvertently, he created an insulin resistance class. After every disease topic, Dr. Bikman puts in a lesson about insulin resistance at the end – it’s involved in almost every disease. Lifestyle is a tremendous part of fixing the problem of insulin.   [24:10] The Ongoing Focus on Glucose Historically, the most common manifestation of diabetes is a high level of glucose. The kidney cannot absorb high levels of glucose, so the person has to urinate a lot. This common feature of diabetes is a consequence of high glucose levels. Today, we know that insulin starts to change decades before the glucose begins to change. By continuing to focus on the glucose, we are focusing on a symptom instead of a root cause. As the person becomes insulin resistance, it’s enough to keep the glucose in check. Eventually, a person stops producing insulin and becomes deficient. Now, the glucose is no longer in check. By focusing on glucose, it’s a wonderful way to sell a lot of insulin.   [27:15] What to Eat if You Are Struggling With Glucose Levels   There is an incredibly rational strategy to deal with glucose levels – cutting carbs.   [32:55] What to Eat When You Are Metabolically Flexible A healthy person can push the glucose out into their cells very well. In a fasted state, they will use fat for fuel. Some people are trying to burn glucose all the time. When you go to a fasted state, they do not make the dramatic shift – they stay in sugar burning mode. Imagine a semi-truck with fuel hooked on to its back. There’s the massive fuel tank, and the small tank tucked into the cab. The small tank is being used as its fuel source; every few hours, they stop and fill it up. However, it carries around a massive reservoir of fuel that it can never use. We have a finite amount of stored glucose – this is a tank that some people only tap into. If we can allow a metabolic shift, we can tap into the fat tank. If we are burning sugar, it’s because insulin is high. If someone is insulin resistance, it can take 48 hours of fasting to get those levels down. Metabolic flexibility is key!   [40:00] Fasting With High Glucose Levels People can sense a slight dip in glucose levels during fasting. They will feel a sense of anxiety, panic, and hunger. Hunger comes in different stages. Some people can fast for a whole year because they are so fat. They have enough energy stored as fat. The difference between fasting and starving is fat mass. The moment the person has run out of fatty tissue – the body will start cutting muscle. In our society, people do not really get to the starvation point.   [44:10] About Excess Protein In 2016, Dr. Bikman gave his first talk about low carbs. Within that year, he was struck with how many people were drinking oil. They were drinking oil because they thought protein would kick them out of ketosis. Protein and carbohydrates together are a different story. In nature, this doesn’t happen unless in dairy. The only time humans drink milk is when they are growing. Bikman says protein has been unnecessarily scrutinized.   [47:45] Exercising in a Fasted State Some people feel nauseous if they do not have food in their guts. Dr. Bikman exercises in the fasted state because he wants to feel light and lean. He doesn’t want to make working out harder than it actually is. Also, he wants to have a higher state of fat burning. What you eat boards the bus before what you have stored. Dr. Bikman wants to be using what he has saved.   [49:50] Cortisol Hijacks Insulin Cortisol tells the body where to store fat. Bikman is unaware of a hormone that can do what insulin can. Cortisol results in a shift – it will promote the movement of fat. It’s an insulin antagonist. Cortisol wants to increase glucose levels to fuel an immune response.   [53:15] Calories In, Calories Out Imagine people are attending an extravagant buffet with the most famous chefs. You want to come as hungry as possible. What are you going to do? You are going to skip meals and exercise hard. What are the two things we tell people to lose weight? Eat less and exercise more. Hunger will always win. Do not try and live in a caloric deficit. We are complicated metabolic machines.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Insulin IQ Read the Latest Ebook Download the Approved Foods List Connect with Dr. Benjamin Bikman: Facebook Twitter YouTube Instagram Benjamin Bikman - 'Insulin vs. Glucagon: The relevance of dietary protein' Benjamin Bikman - 'Insulin vs. Ketones - The Battle for Brown Fat'     Grab that $1 Bottle of Olive Oil Sign up for the Keto Kamp Academy Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube Purity Coffee   This podcast is for information purposes only. 5 Things All Keto Beginners Must Know! | Non-Scale Victories, Hair Loss, Electrolyte Deficiencies, Bile, & More! – Ben Azadi: KKP 53

On episode 53 of The Keto Kamp Podcast we discuss 5 Things Every Keto Beginner MUST Know. Here is what you'll discover in this episode: Why healthy bile is key to digesting fat and removing toxins Why people lose hair on keto, and what to do about it How to determine if keto is working The importance of replenishing electrolytes A bonus tip which ties this altogether And so much more! . 🎓Want to become a keto and fasting pro? Join the BRAND NEW Keto Kamp Academy today: http://www.ketokampacademy.com . ▸ [FREE] 🔥E-BOOK: "The Keto Kickstart Guide: 4 Steps to Burning Fat Instead of Sugar" | http://www.ketokickstartguide.com .  This episode is sponsored by my favorite coffee beans, Purity Coffee. Click here to get your bag of Purity Coffee, use the coupon code ketokamp for 10% off. . 1: Healthy bile is VERY important.   Bile, which is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, is a green substance that acts as a detergent to break down fat. Bile also helps to remove toxins.    Ginger and Ginger Tea Dandelion and tea Coffee Cranberries Arugula Dark Chocolate   If you don’t have a gallbladder, click the link above here to learn how to do keto without a gallbladder. It can be done!   2: Don’t focus on weight loss, focus instead on health.   The truth is, nobody has a weight problem. When I was obese weighing 80 pounds more than I do today, I did not have a weight problem. I had a weight symptom! The real problem was my hormones and cellular inflammation.   The number on the scale is a poor indicator of whether or not something is working.   I understand you want to hit your goal weight, I’ve been there. Instead, take photos (front, side, back) along with weight and measurements. (Blood work too) and then take those again every 7 weeks.   Sometimes fat gets pulled from the liver and other organs first.  Non-scale victories (energy, confidence, clothes, sleep, skin, inflammation)   Keep following your healthy keto lifestyle, the inflammation will go down and you will get the results you want.    Stick and stay its bound to pay   Faith and fear quote     3: Not all keto diets are the same.   Keto is not technically a diet, its a metabolic state. Its been around since humans have been around. This means, keto is not a fad, its a fact! With that being said, there’s certain foods that prevent ketosis, or allow ketosis.    I’ll break it all down here for you….   Going to Mcdonalds or any other fast food restaurant, getting a burger without the bun and saying #keto, is NOT going to get you the results you want.   Avoid the vegetable oils and bad artificial sweeteners (even pasteurized dairy can be an issue for most)   Have healthy oils and the right sweeteners in moderation   Monk fruit Pure stevia Sugar alcohols swerve   4: Replenishing your electrolytes are a MUST   You lose a ton of water weight when you transition from burning sugar to burning fat. The kidneys dump water along with it. Replenish with high quality sea salt, especially if you drink coffee (add it to your coffee)     5: You might feel worse before you feel better (toxins) . When you start losing weight you may lose some hair.   Fat soluble toxins get stored and can be released into the bloodstream. This is where bitters mentioned earlier come into play. I also recommend a supplement called BIND, take this before bed. BIND acts as a catchers mitt to catch the big boys (heavy metals) and put them in the toiler.   Hair loss may occur, this is common, the hair will grow back stronger and healthier.   Weight loss is a stressful event.  Weight loss is a shock to the system. Its anti survival. Hair grows in phases. Let the phase pass and the hair will come back. If the hair loss has occurred within the first few weeks, hold the course as it typically takes 3-5 months for the hair to come back thicker and stronger. There are certain nutrients you can give yourself to speed this up, and I’ll go over them a little later in this video. Just remember this, when stress hits your body, the body will take care of its vital organs but hair is not a priority.   B-Complex vitamins (biotin is included in here) this helps to grow protein, and strengthen hair to make them thicken. Make sure you take a b-complex and not sure the biotin alone because this can create a functional deficiency.    Trace Minerals. These are involved with enzymes that grow protein. Collagen is also great because their hair is made up of, well, collagen.   Low stomach acid (not able to digest protein) could be why its not ending up in hair for growth. Use digest from systemic and apple cider vinegar tablets from paleo valley     BONUS TIP: COMMUNITY IS KEY   I’ve come to realize that our environment is more important than we think. Hang around 5 people who are unhealthy and unhappy, you’ll be the 6th person.   Hang around other people committed to their healthy keto journey, and you’ll be the 6th person.   At keto kamp we have created a phenomenal community in the keto kamp academy. In the academy you get the complete structure A-Z on keto, fasting, sleep, fat loss, exercise, mindset and all things perfect health.   Along with the 100+ videos, you get a community built to help you succeed. When to Eat Carbs For Fat Loss, Intermittent Fasting For Serious Weight Loss, With Jay Campbell: KKP 51

When to Eat Carbs For Fat Loss, Intermittent Fasting For Serious Weight Loss, With Jay Campbell: KKP 51

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, Jay Campbell, a best-selling author, podcast host, and champion male physique competitor.   Jay is also the Founder of TOTRevolution.com and the globally recognized TOT Revolution and Optimized Life Podcasts. Both podcasts interview the top Optimization physicians and Subject Matter Experts who answer questions and provide their decades of experience to help Men and Women become fully optimized. Jay also created OptimizedForever, the world's #1 premium group for optimizing hormones and long term health.   Jay is a champion male physique competitor who, along with his wife Monica co-founded FabFitOver40.com, the #1 site on the web for people who want high quality and scientifically backed information on staying fit above 40. Jay is also the Co-Owner of MonicaDiazTeam.com (with wife Monica)-a mega-production eXp Realty residential real estate team in Southern California.   In this episode, Jay and I talk about what inspired him to enter the health and wellness space – Jay has always had a keen ability to understand the human body and the different physical talents people possess. First, Jay describes what consciousness means and speaks about his life-changing trip to Peru. Plus, Jay explains how to eliminate fear from our lives by understanding the law of attraction. He also describes the correlation between sleep, muscles, and longevity. Tune in!   Join The Keto Kamp Academy today! http://www.ketokampacademy.com   [08:50] How Jay Got Involved in the Health Space Jay recently came back from Peru – the energy completely transformed his being. Jay is blessed to observe the human figure and has always been able to see people’s athletic abilities. Even as a young child, Jay could see how high a person could jump or how fast they could run. Jay never got into the fitness game full-time until the last seven or eight years. He is continually learning and studying everything about health. At 40, he took his knowledge and continues to push it into mainstream media. When you become a creator, you end up creating so much that you don’t even observe all the things you have put out. “I’ve been blogging since 2003.”   [14:00] About Consciousness It’s an awareness that we are energetic beings. If you could pull back our meat suits and look into our souls – you would see plasmatic electric energy. This could be in the form of an orb. Consciousness is understanding how much more we are than our physical bodies. Truthfully, life is happening fast, so consciousness is difficult to explain. Consciousness and awareness are interchangeable. People who are resistant to the idea of consciousness can still feel it.   [17:00] About Jay’s Trip to Peru   Jay has always been a man that is interested in the realms of understanding mankind’s true ancestry. Jay took massive amounts of videos while in Peru. It is one of those places that defies all logic and reasoning. You become exposed to energetic density – it brings you into a different experience. He hiked insanely beautiful and majestic peaks. He climbed 18,000 feet to the most spectacular view. Check it out on Jay’s Twitter.   [27:00] Ways to Eliminate Fear From Our Lives The best way to eliminate fear is to understand quantum physics. Everything is conscious, alive, and has light in it. We are all beings of energy. The world is a gigantic construct of energy – the energy is infinite. Once you realize this, you know you will not die. When our bodies run out of time, our energy will never stop – it continues, evolves, and expands. Why would you do anything negative? When you speak, act, and think it should always be positive. Media, technology, and the internet want to create a victim culture. It is so easy to play the victim card. Part of being human is understanding that we make every decision in our lives. Do your best to put forward positive words, thoughts, and actions. Everyone knows the law of attraction – what you put out will come back to you.   [32:30] The Correlation Between Muscle and Longevity   Muscle is the most significant deterrent against all the diseases in aging. The more muscle you have in the body, the following things will happen: Burning calories more efficiently Less body fat Greater bone mineral density Makes you insulin sensitive The better you can eat carbs and get away with it   [35:45] Women and Muscles Women never eat enough protein. They end up having spine issues as they get older because they stop producing calcium. A woman has to go to the gym and do resistant type training to strengthen the spine. Don’t think that building muscle means you will look like a bodybuilder.   [39:15] How Sleep Affects our Muscles Jay always tells people that sleep is the number one most disturbing biological function that people experience. We are destroying our ability to sleep by having technology in our rooms. If you aren’t sleeping, then you have no control over your energy. Fat loss happens during sleep – it doesn’t happen at the gym. Sleep is more important than nutrition and exercise.   [44:30] Weight-Loss Tips From Jay The average person who goes to an insurance-covered doctor in America, the likelihood you will be misdiagnosed is over 95%. People are prescribed drugs that make it so much worse. Plus, medications will make our bodies worse and drain us of our money. Metabolic flexibility is where it is at. You have to be able to choose macro and micro fuel sources based on your energetic demand. For instance, if you are a long-distance runner, you might want only ketones for fuel. Fasting for women should be 16-18 hours. For men, it should be at least 20 hours.   [52:15] How to Utilize Fasting If you want to be a person that loses massive amounts of fat mass in the fastest time possible, learn to fast four times a week and train the other three days. Eat keto at night on your fasting days. On your training days, try and consume a low amount of carbs. If you do this for a month, you can lose 10% of pure body fat.   [57:20] Jay’s Definition of an Optimized Life An optimized life is a person who has mastery over spiritual, mental, the heart, and physical aspects of the body. What good is a physical meat suit that is shredded if there is no mindfulness training being completed? All of these things are synergistic.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit TOT Revolution Listen to the Podcast Read the Blog Connect with Jay Campbell: YouTube LinkedIn Instagram Facebook Twitter Burn Fat with The Metabolic Blowtorch Diet: The Ultimate Guide for Optimizing Intermittent Fasting: Burn Fat, Preserve Muscle, Enhance Focus and Transform Your Health The Testosterone Optimization Therapy Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Living a Fully Optimized Life The Definitive Testosterone Replacement Therapy MANual: How to Optimize Your Testosterone For Lifelong Health And Happiness     Grab that $1 Bottle of Olive Oil Join The Keto Kamp Academy today! http://www.ketokampacademy.com Watch Keto Kamp on YouTube   This podcast is for information purposes only. Movement Over Exercise, How to Find Purpose in Life, Gratefulness, With Jeremy Abramson : KKP 48

Movement Over Exercise, How to Find Purpose in Life, Gratefulness, With Jeremy Abramson : KKP 48

Today, I am lucky to have here with me, Jeremy Abramson, the founder of the E3 Lifestyle brand. Jeremy Abramson's purpose in life is to cultivate community and create a lifelong impact on people's lives. After moving his entire life to Florida, overcoming being homeless, and losing what at the time he considered his dream job, he founded E3 Lifestyle.   The E3 Lifestyle brand combines Abramson's knowledge of the mind and body, with his passion for helping others. As the Chief Energy Officer, he is dedicated to helping others unleash their full potential. Abramson has received some of the most coveted certifications in the industry and studied alongside elite professionals like Wim Hof, Aubrey Marcus, Ben Greenfield, and Lewis Howes.   Today, Abramson travels the world, optimizing the health and happiness of athletes, government officials, youth, and high-level CEO's. His customized training, performance, and mindset practices bring out the full capacity and productivity of his clients. The most recent aspect of E3 brings wellness directly into the workplace. He has been brought in as a speaker by brands like WeWork, Capital One, and Miami Made to implement his wellness training programs and inspirational speeches.   As a philanthropist, he makes giving back a priority, talking to youth at several local nonprofit. In 2017, he partnered with Maison Fortuné Orphanage in Haiti and returned for a second trip the following year. As his business and digital following continue to build, his influence follows. In January 2019, he rolled out his first highly anticipated online program, CLIMB. The program aims to optimize your human experience through habit change and self-awareness. It has already been recognized as one of the most impactful coaching programs in the industry.   In this episode, Jeremy and I talk about what has inspired him to start the E3 lifestyle. First, Jeremy reveals how to navigate our self-limiting beliefs. These thoughts we tell ourselves usually come from our childhood. Recognize when these thoughts happen, and think about why this is a story you are telling yourself. Plus, Jeremy explains how to tell your family and friends about the ketogenic diet – especially those people who may not be completely supportive. He also describes the Stand Up 2 Sitting movement and how Jeremey is starting his nonprofit next month. The last few years have been Jeremy putting in the time and effort to become more knowledgeable and meet more people. This is just the beginning for Jeremy.   [16:30] Navigating Self-Limiting Beliefs Mental health and mindset are kings. It is essential to step back and think about your childhood. Where did these self-limiting beliefs come from? We may not even be conscious of these thoughts we have been having. A typical example is your parents getting a divorce when you are nine years old. From that event, we start to tell ourselves so many different stories. We build perceptions, and we think they are the truth. People do not know they are capable of these great things. Build self-awareness as to why you are having these thoughts. Who are you spending your time with? If you are with people who are constantly complaining and bringing you down, that is what you are going to manifest.   [22:25] Getting Out of the Victim Role    Our struggles are part of our unique journeys. Adversity will manifest in our lives in some way. You will be able to connect on such a deep level with so many people. Find the silver lining – it’s all about perspective.   [24:30] Family Who is Unsupportive of Keto Give them the opportunity to understand. Tell them why you are trying the lifestyle and ask if they will support you on the journey. A lot of the time, they will still think you are crazy. Prioritize yourself – so many times we will put other people first. Fill your cup up first. If you feel terrible every day, how are you going to show up for other people? Small changes will profoundly manifest into bigger ones. Consistency is king. Jeremy doesn’t train that hard. He just lives a balanced life.   [30:30] Attitude and Enthusiasm   Jeremy has always had a childlike joy with a goofy sense of humor. There have been times where Jeremy has gone through struggles. He handled it by keeping them to himself. He credits his optimism to his dad, his biggest hero. His Dad always preached gratitude from a young age. He started giving Jeremy gratitude stones. If they ever came across a problematic situation – Jeremy’s dad would remind him of how lucky they are. Always treat people with respect and kindness. Sometimes, Jeremy does not do a good job at this. However, he still works on bringing good vibes to a room.   [40:00] Exercising on an Airplane Jeremy posted a video of him doing dips on the airplane and lunging down the aisle. Jeremy’s body was feeling stiff, and he needed to stretch. Some people hated his video – if he weren’t white, he would have been arrested. Street performers inspire Jeremy because they share their gifts with the world.   [43:45] Causes of Inactivity We spend eight or nine hours straight sitting. After work, we come home and relax. We could spend ten or twelve hours a day sitting. The seven areas of the world with the highest quality of life do not even workout. They are active throughout the day – they move every twenty minutes. Find alternative postures. Jeremy posts a lot of videos on this. Standup desks are trendy right now. They are not a great solution because if you are standing in a fixed position – it’s not that different than sitting all day. A ten-minute walk will do so much for you, especially outside. It can boost your creativity by up to sixty percent. Find someone to hold you accountable.   [50:40] Most Exciting Thing Jeremy is Working On Jeremy is launching a nonprofit next month. He is bringing fitness to urban areas – places where there might be poverty or crime. He wants to install bars to do pullups and do kid-like things. Jeremy wants to teach them simple things to move their bodies and have fun. He is starting in Miami then moving to South America. Jeremy is all about multiple impact streams. He wants to help the youth get strong and share some laughs.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Jeremy’s Website Connect with Jeremy Abramson: Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Email Jeremy: JA@E3LIFESTYLE.COM Call Jeremy: (650) 273-3672 Listen to Jeremy’s Podcast   🎓 Become a member of The Keto Kamp Academy for exclusive access to these videos: www.ketokampacademy.com 🎓   Free Keto Kickstart Guide: http://www.ketokickstartguide.com   This podcast is for information purposes only.
