SUNDAY SPECIAL: Mia, Holly & The Attack On Teenage Girls

SUNDAY SPECIAL: Mia, Holly & The Attack On Teenage Girls

Today's Sunday Special is one we think you're going to love.

Mia Freedman has been in countless conversations with Holly Wainwright—on mics, off mics, in meetings, in texts. But she’s never been on MID. Until now.

In this episode, Holly kicks off Season Five with someone who knows her well, and who’s read something very personal—her brand new book, He Would Never.

It’s a story about the limits and power of female friendships, narcissistic love, and the tricky transitions from girlhood to teenagehood. And Mia had thoughts. Lots of them. For one - the teenage girls we were in the 90s are very different than the teenage girls of today.

This episode is about writing and ambition. Confidence and self-doubt. Teenage daughters and their teenage selves. It’s a conversation between two women the same age, but at different parenting stages.

At the end of this episode, Holly has a very special gift for you - so stick around, you don't want to miss it.

You can pre order Holly's book He Would Never here. And it's available in all good book stores from April 29th

The Awkward Interview Everyone Is Talking About

The Awkward Interview Everyone Is Talking About

A very pervy interview between one of the most famous names in Australian entertainment, Andy Lee, and comedian Wil Anderson, is being talked about all over the country. Did Andy just provide a masterclass in how to call someone out? And Australia's national anthem is under fire because of its problematic lyrics. Are You A Bernie Or An Elton?

Are You A Bernie Or An Elton?

The Elton John biopic Rocketman was released this week and it looks closely at the relationship between Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. But the one question it has Jessie Stephens asking is - are you a ‘Bernie’ or an ‘Elton’ when it comes to your life? And by this she means do you want the limelight for your work or are you just happy floating in the background making good things? Plus, in case you missed it, unmarried women are the healthiest and happiest according to London professor Paul Dolan. Apparently married men take fewer risks and “calm down” and are therefore healthier than their single counterparts, whereas married women report more mental and physical problems than single ones. So who’s happier and does it really matter? And is it okay to pull out the Entertainment Book on a date? That’s this weeks group therapy. Mia Freedman is still on holidays so stepping in with Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright is our fabulous host of The Quicky, Claire Murphy. https://omny.fm/shows/the-quicky/playlists/podcast Subscribe to Mamamia Out Loud here: https://omny.fm/shows/mamamia-out-loud/playlists/podcast RECOMMENDATIONS Jessie: Assisted Stretching and the Ivan Milat book Sins of The Brother Holly: Season 2 of The Letdown on ABC Claire: Wanda Sykes' Not Normal on Netflix END BITS Hosts: Claire Murphy, Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright. How Australia Failed Courtney Herron

How Australia Failed Courtney Herron

On Saturday morning the body of 25-year-old Courtney Herron was found in Melbourne’s Royal Park in Parkville. There’s been a lot of coverage surrounding Courtney’s death, shockingly she’s the 20th woman to be killed in Australia this year. But people are specifically focussing on the fact that she was homeless and that she’d been seeking government assistance for some time, needing housing and treatment for her drug dependency and was suffering from mental illness. So is this a conversation about violence against women or is it one about homelessness? Or both? Plus, the UK’s second female prime minister, Theresa May handed down her resignation speech on May 24. So what does this mean for Brexit? Holly is back with her famed poo-skirt analogy, and it’s a ripper. And, Toffee is the world’s first dating app only for people who went to private schools. But is it really a good idea? Subscribe to Mamamia Out Loud here: https://omny.fm/shows/mamamia-out-loud/playlists/podcast END BITS Hosts: Jess Wang, Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright. I Dated A Celebrity Or Did I?

I Dated A Celebrity Or Did I?

Dating is hard. Particularly if someone thinks you were dating when you weren't. In his new memoir, American music producer and DJ Moby wrote that he and actress Natalie Portman briefly dated when she was 20 and he was 33.The thing is, Portman denies the claims, saying that Moby was “a much older man being creepy with me when I had just graduated from high school.” Portman also says she was 18 at the time, not 20. So can it be possible for one person to think you’re dating, and the other person to NOT think you’re dating? Plus, we received a call from an Outlouder asking a very pertinent question about pregnancy. Should you find out the gender of your baby? And if so, should you tell anyone? And, Australians can't stop taking selfies. So is it a problem when we care more about how an experience looks than how it feels? When Boobs Shout Louder Than Words

When Boobs Shout Louder Than Words

This week, deputy leader of the Labor Party, Tanya Plibersek, announced she would not be contesting the leadership. Which is perfect for Holly because she's got some post-election thoughts she needs to get off her chest. Plus, filling in for Mia this week is Editorial Assistant Jess Wang and she’s brought an equally serious question to the table...can you pat a dog without asking it's owner for permission? And if you do ask are you then forced to make excruciating small talk with them or can you just pat their dog and walk away? And what do boobs have to do with protesting abortion laws? Following the recent Alabama abortion ban, women all over the world are sharing their stories via the #youknowme hashtag. But is there a wrong way to protest? Some people are unimpressed supermodel Emily Ratajkowski has chosen to protest with a semi-nude photo. So is she a social media genius or just self-promoting? The Woman Who Works 22 Hours A Day

The Woman Who Works 22 Hours A Day

The election is happening TOMORROW - and 3.5 million Australians have already voted. This has never happened before and no-one really knows why. So is this a generational shift away from ‘event’ voting and towards convenience? It’s going to completely change the way politicians campaign next time and also means it’s likely we won’t get a result on Saturday and Holly has some very strong feelings about it. Jessie went to an engagement party over the weekend and didn’t bring a gift because the invitation said not to bring a gift. But when she got there? Yep, you guessed it. Gifts. And lots of them. So is she a bad person or did she do the right thing? Plus, how many hours a day do you work? 71-year-old American author Danielle Steel says she works 22 hours a day. And, she’s written 178 books. She’s listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having a book on the New York Times best-seller list for the most consecutive weeks of any author. But is this a life really worth living?
