SUNDAY SPECIAL: Mia, Holly & The Attack On Teenage Girls

SUNDAY SPECIAL: Mia, Holly & The Attack On Teenage Girls

Today's Sunday Special is one we think you're going to love.

Mia Freedman has been in countless conversations with Holly Wainwright—on mics, off mics, in meetings, in texts. But she’s never been on MID. Until now.

In this episode, Holly kicks off Season Five with someone who knows her well, and who’s read something very personal—her brand new book, He Would Never.

It’s a story about the limits and power of female friendships, narcissistic love, and the tricky transitions from girlhood to teenagehood. And Mia had thoughts. Lots of them. For one - the teenage girls we were in the 90s are very different than the teenage girls of today.

This episode is about writing and ambition. Confidence and self-doubt. Teenage daughters and their teenage selves. It’s a conversation between two women the same age, but at different parenting stages.

At the end of this episode, Holly has a very special gift for you - so stick around, you don't want to miss it.

You can pre order Holly's book He Would Never here. And it's available in all good book stores from April 29th

Get Yourself A Nemesis

Get Yourself A Nemesis

You need three things in life. A nemesis, a mentor and an arch enemy. Why, you ask? Motivation. There was an article in The Atlantic this week titled “Get Yourself a Nemesis.” You can read it here, but basically, it says a nemesis can push you to do better. And Jessie agrees. Plus are Australians lazy? Businesswoman Roxy Jacenko has given an interview this week saying pretty much that. But do you agree? And, is Joe Biden creepy or just old? All this on Out Loud today... How Do You Put Your Bra On?

How Do You Put Your Bra On?

Hey... you there... did you know that there’s more than one way to put your bra on? Yep, and it has the Outlouders bamboozled probably more than it should. Plus, why is author Elizabeth Gilbert so good at falling in love? A year since her wife Raya died, Elizabeth has announced that she’s seeing a new fella, and while we’re extremely happy for her - we can’t help but wonder if there's such thing as being 'lucky in love'. And it wouldn’t be Friday if we didn’t have recommendations. Mia’s discovered the Jonas brothers and Jessie wants you to listen to a podcast on disgust…. Recommendations Jessie: Stuff You Should Know...On Disgust and Straight White Man by Bo Burnham Holly: Sammy Jo's Play Ground Politics Terrorism Video Mia: Sucker by the Jonas Brothers and Billie Eilish's new album END BITS Hosts: Mia Freedman, Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright. What Makes A Woman Unlikeable?

What Makes A Woman Unlikeable?

Amy Schumer’s brand new stand up show Growing has dropped on Netflix, and it’s got us thinking about the likeability factor when it comes to female celebrities. Is there something fundamentally unlikable about a successful woman? Plus, Jacinda Ardern’s partner Clarke Gayford posted an image on Twitter this week that praised the New Zealand Prime Minister for making the country safer for their daughter - which made Holly ask the question: are we finally done with the myth that men don't want a powerful woman? And what the heck is concierge parenting and... are most of us guilty of it? END BITS Hosts: Mia Freedman, Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright. What Young Women Are Spending Crazy Money On

Millennial women are spending a fortune on homewares and vacuum cleaners and Holly is confused. So what’s going on with the rise of domesticity among young women? Plus, JK Rowling has given an interview where she talks about Dumbledore’s sexuality and some fans aren't happy. Is she virtue signalling? Or can she evolve characters she created over 20 years ago? And of course, Friday recommendations... Recommendations Mia: Turning your phone to grey scale. BONUS: We Need To Talk About Scott Morrison & Waleed Aly

On Thursday night, The Project’s Waleed Aly sat down with Prime Minister Scott Morrison for an intense, commercial-free interview. The segment covered whether or not our current government has capitalised on Islamophobia, and the place One Nation has within Australian politics. Our very own Rachel Corbett was a co-host on Thursday night’s episode of The Project, and on today’s show she offers some insight into what it was like behind the scenes. In this special bonus episode of Mamamia Out Loud, Mia, Jessie and Rachel unpack the interview that stopped the nation. This Is What A Leader Looks Like

This Is What A Leader Looks Like

On Friday afternoon, an Australian white supremacist walked into a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand and opened fire on the people who were gathered for Friday prayers. He live-streamed the attack on Facebook as he shot dead 50 people and injured many others at two mosques. It was a shocking attack and it rocked the world. One shining light out of this whole situation has been the way Jacinda Ardern has acted in the wake of the shooting. The internet has been flooded with photos of her comforting the New Zealanders and speaking to the nation about how this behaviour won't be tolerated. There's a lot of love for the NZ Prime Minister right now and we think it's totally justified. Plus, we discuss the Fraser Anning egg situation and whether it's ever ok to egg someone, even if their views are awful. Distractions Mia: Watching Captain Marvel at the movies, listening to No Filter with Josh & Sean Szeps Holly: Speaking to family and friends and rewatching Game Of Thrones Jessie: Watching Married At First Sight and Insight on SBS about Loneliness END BITS Hosts: Mia Freedman, Jessie Stephens and Holly Wainwright.
