What is Prana?

"Pra" means primary, first, innate.

"Anu" means the tiniest, smallest, minute, indestructible unit of energy.


Prana is that which animates and propels; the great mover.

It is nature’s intelligence, the energy that enlivens all living beings. Developing pranic sensitivity leads to pranic mastery. Prana follows the mind: a scattered mind disperses prana, while a calm mind regulates prana and bodily functions.


Prana Vayus & Prana Vayu Kriya:

Apana Vayu: governs emotional letting go, forgiveness, surrender, and non-attachment. More apana is needed when the ability to let go is challenged.

Samana Vayu governs homeostasis, balance, and stillness. It allows the mind and body to centre themselves.

Prana Vayu internalises energy for regeneration, revitalisation, and drawing in what is needed for health and joy.

Udana Vayu represents self-power, resilience, and enthusiasm. It governs growth, curiosity, aspiration, and fluidity of expression.

Vyana Vayu integrates the other four vayus. It moves circulation to extremities and governs the aura.


Textual Sources:

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Chapter 3) discusses the role of prana in regulating bodily functions and its connection to the mind. "When prana moves, the mind moves. When prana is still, the mind is still."

The Prashna Upanishad (Chapter 2) explains prana as the essence of life and its relationship to the five vayus. "Prana divides itself into five, each serving a vital role in sustaining life."

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (Chapter 2, Sutra 49-52) highlights the importance of pranayama as a means of controlling prana to still the mind and prepare for meditation. "Pranayama is the cessation of the movement of inhalation and exhalation."

The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra provides meditative practices involving prana for expanding consciousness. "By focusing on the movement of prana, one may discover the space between breaths and attain stillness."

The Upanishads (particularly Taittiriya and Chandogya) explore prana as the fundamental energy connecting the individual self to the cosmic self. "The gods breathe in and follow prana, the breath of life."
