Welcome back! Today’s brand new episode is all about The HFEA reforms and what opening the register means both donors and recipients. Michael is flying solo today, he chats to Dr Carole Gilling Smith from The Agora in Brighton as well as Rachel Cutting MBE from The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), who as an independent organisation regulate UK fertility treatment.

Our wonderful guests tell us all more about how regulation is changing and the impact on all those using and that used donor gametes. We really enjoyed this episode as it provides a fascinating insight to how fortunate we are in the UK to have a fertility regulator.

Guest bios:

Dr Carole Gilling-Smith, MA (Cantab), FRCOG, PhD 

 

Carole is the CEO,Medical Director and Founder of the Agora Clinic in Hove. She is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist. She believes that all individuals, whatever their sexual orientation, gender identity and ethnic background should have equal access to fertility care and be professionally supported and guided throughout their parenting journey. This is the ethos of the Agora, a clinic renowned for embracing diversity and leading the UK provision of inclusive fertility care through supporting those from the LGBTQ+ community find safe and fulfilling routes to parenthood. Carole is on the Advisory Board for My Surrogacy Journey. 

Rachel Cutting MBE

Rachel Cutting graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1995 and completed the Association of Clinical Embryologists post graduate diploma in her first trainee embryologist position.  In 2001, she gained the

position of Principal Embryologist at Jessop Fertility in Sheffield and was Person Responsible for 10 years and quality manager for 16 years. Rachel was chair of the Association of Clinical Embryologists from 2011-2014 and has been involved with several professional bodies and organisations. She was instrumental in writing the curriculum for the Reproductive Science Scientific Training programme. She has written several papers and chapters and has presented regularly at national and international conferences. Working closely with the HFEA for several years Rachel was involved in writing the national guidelines for single embryo transfer and was committed to the One at a Time strategy to reduce the multiple pregnancy rate following IVF. Rachel was a member of the HEFA Authority and sat on the Statutory Approvals Committee until she joined the HFEA as the Director of Compliance and Information in 2019.
