My Passion Case: Maggie Freleng- The Long Island Serial Killer

My Passion Case: Maggie Freleng- The Long Island Serial Killer

Part 1 of 2If you have any information regarding the Gilgo Beach Murders, tips can be sent to gilgonews.com.If you'd like to support the show, you can do so via the Venmo app with my username @bill-huffman-3 or via PayPal.All true-crime aficionados know about the Gilgo Beach Murders and mysterious Long Island Serial Killer.Just this past Thursday authorities held a news conference to show off new evidence in relation to the investigation. The Suffolk County police on Long Island released photos of what it said could be a significant piece of evidence: a black leather belt with the letters "WH" or "HM" found at the scene a decade ago.The authorities said they are confident the belt was handled by the killer because it didn't belong to any of the victims. They released a photograph of the belt and I will put the picture on the website. This is very interesting news since the case has been kind of cold for the past few years.Police must think there is a new opportunity to catch the killer because they also launched a new website gilgonews.com to collect new tips and information about the case. The first set of remains was discovered in 20-10 while police were searching for another woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert. It wouldn't be for another year when Gilbert's body would be found across the way on neighboring Oak Beach.Once Gilbert's body was recovered the total number of bodies found was 11.Police said most of the women found worked in prostitution and advertised on such services as Craigslist. When an independent autopsy was performed on Gilbert's body, they were able to determine she was killed due to homicidal strangulation. The reason for the second autopsy was the first one concluded Gilbert had died from drowning and drug overdose. The autopsy was able to conclude she did not die from a natural disease, drug overdose or drowning.Gilbert had vanished after visiting a customer and was told to have freaked out and started banging on neighbor's doors asking for help and saying people were trying to kill her. While searching for Gilbert, police found four bodies in various stages of decomposition.More remains were uncovered on Gilgo Beach, which is roughly 40 miles from New York City. The FBI didn't join the task force until 20-15, so this new evidence may be a result of their participation. Now that I've run you through the basics of the case, let's join my conversation with producer and star in the true-crime community, Maggie Freleng to take a deeper dive into the Long Island Serial Killer.Unfortunately, this case is too big to cover in one episode so tune in next week for part two. Meanwhile, thank you so much again to Maggie from Missing Maura Murray, NPR, Crawlspace, and everything true crime.Press Conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he5GFvBPt7gAnd thank you for tuning in to my new show. Wondery Introduces The Sneak

Wondery Introduces The Sneak

Wondery and USA Today introduces The Sneak In the Fall of 2008, a sleepy Seattle suburb was shocked by a crime that no one expected. A local football star planned a daring bank robbery - complete with decoys, disguises, and an outlandish getaway plan. He drew the whole thing up just like a game-winning play on the field - and almost got away with it. The Sneak follows the twisting story of a once-great athlete who committed that crime, and how the robbery forever changed the small town where it occurred.  You are about to hear a preview of The Sneak from Wondery and USA Today. As you listen, be sure to subscribe to The Sneak on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you are listening right now. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-sneak/id1487746571https://wondery.com/shows/the-sneak/  Learn more about your ad choices. Thank you for supporting this show and independent journalism!Five years before police uncovered a cluster of bodies in Gilgo Beach, Long Island there was another cluster murder in Atlantic City that had people talking. It was thirteen years ago when detectives began their unenvious search in the drainage ditch behind a shady $20 a night motel. The Golden Key Motel sat in a really seedy part of Atlantic City, located just off the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. It was at this no-tell motel, where two unknowing witnesses would stumble upon a life-altering sight, the body of a dead woman. Anyone with information concerning this case please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.The Atlantic City prosecutor’s office has established a tip line, (609) 909-7666, and has asked for the public’s assistance.Despite being in a part of town known for violence, drugs, and prostitution, murder was still something everyone took seriously, so they called the cops. When they arrived the site was cordoned off and the search went on to uncover a total of four women’s bodies.Sources:https://www.acpo.org/investigation-remains-active-of-4-women-killed-bodies-dumped-in-west-atlantic-city-in-2006/https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3323935/He-got-sexual-kicks-women-s-feet-Investigator-offers-25-000-reward-help-capture-Atlantic-City-strangler-murdered-prostitutes-left-face-barefoot-drainage-ditch.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/news/2016/11/10_years_later_the_atlantic_city_serial_killer_rem.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/news/2016/11/from_the_archives_who_were_the_atlantic_city_seria.htmlhttps://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/the-end-of-the-infamous-golden-key-motel/article_1da8366a-2740-11e5-bd45-a375260933b1.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=user-sharehttps://www.acpo.org/investigation-remains-active-of-4-women-killed-bodies-dumped-in-west-atlantic-city-in-2006/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbound_Stranglerhttps://www.nj.com/atlantic/2017/04/oceanfront_mixed-use_development_wins_praise_from.htmlhttps://www.businessinsider.com/atlantic-city-is-now-a-ghost-town-2017-7#in-april-of-this-year-construction-began-on-the-atlantic-city-gateway-a-new-210-million-development-that-will-include-corporate-residential-restaurant-and-entertainment-buildings-as-well-as-academic-facilities-for-stockton-university-it-will-be-the-first-non-casino-development-in-the-city-in-15-years-15 Anyone with information can call the Prosecutor’s Office at 609-909-7800 or visit acpo.org/tips.html to submit an anonymous tip.
