E36 – Supporting Leaders within Family Businesses with Iain Massey

E36: Interview with Iain Massey

Iain is the founder of Upland Consulting and works very closely with family businesses to create increase profitability and cohesion. In this episode we talked about the importance of creating a community that allows small businesses to tap into peer support. We also touched on how we can be hesitant to reach out and encouraging leaders to work with support is key in creating success. Iain shared that they key is to support the whole person or people, not just the business.

Iain also shares that creating the right conversation is the best start to helping businesses to be able to shut off and separate personal and business. Family businesses can bring their personal elements into the business and also bring their business into their family relationship interactions and it is important to be able to recognise this and separate them not just for the success of the business but also for the wellbeing of the individuals.

Iain Massey Bio:

Iain Massey is a company director, board advisor and business consultant with postgraduate qualifications and broad commercial experience. He has excellent professional and interpersonal skills, a thorough understanding of the regional business environment, and wide-ranging knowledge and expertise.

He holds a Graduate Diploma in Business Management from the University of Western Australia, a Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from Curtin University, and a Bachelor of Arts (1st Class) from UWA. He is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors' course.

Iain is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (AFAIM), a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), and a past chair of the AICD South-West Regional Committee.

After 20 years in varied corporate IT roles, Iain moved from Perth to Balingup, in South West WA, and took the opportunity of a career reset. After four years in general business management, he founded Upland Consulting to offer regional businesses and NFPs support and guidance that was not readily available outside the capital cities.

Upland offers programs and support for all the stages of the business journey, in each case from the premise that the best work of the best boards should be accessible to even the smallest companies.

Upland's mantra is "Head, Heart and Bottom Line," reflecting Iain's vision that a business that nurtures and sustains us needs to work well at each of these levels. We need to think well, we need to honour our values and human connectedness, and we need to earn enough money.

The ideal result is a lifestyle you love, built around a business you love.
