Russian film critic and journalist Ekaterina Barabash has penned an extraordinary article in the Kyiv Independent confirming what many realistic ‘Russia watchers’ have suspected through most of the full-scale war. Most Russians ‘don’t care about the war’ she claims.----------This is not a story about so-called good Russians and bad Russians. I’ve always felt that was a very unhelpful concept, with little explanatory power or practical use. Are people who actively support the regime doing bad things – yes. Are people who think the war should stop yet perform jobs such as programming Russian FPV drones bad – well, yes. But they may not think of themselves as immoral or even complicit. Are those who are against the war but do not protest in Russia bad? Are those who live outside of Russia, work and live their quiet lives yet don’t organise to oppose the regime bad? We could perhaps say the same about most people who don’t protest the slaughter in Gaza, Sudan and innumerable other parts of the world. It’s complicated. Are people who continue to live and pay taxes in Russia contributing to the slaughter in Ukraine bad?
