One of my all-time favorite movie lines comes from Grumpier Old Men. In it, Burgess Merideth reveals his “secret” to long life:

(Speaking to his son)

“Last Thursday I turned 95 years old… and I never exercised a day in my life… every morning I wake up and I smoke a cigarette, and then I eat five strips of bacon, and for lunch I eat a bacon sandwich, and for a midday snack? Bacon! … a whole damn plate of it! And I usually drink my dinner!

(takes sip of beer).

It’s a hilarious scene, yet sobering to think how often we humans often take our cues from what we see others do.

Jim Rohn (a prolific motivational speaker) said we are the average of the five people closest to us, and I believe that is so true.

Of course, Jim lived in simpler times. Today he might edit the saying to read:

--->You’re the average of the 5 people whose Facebook posts you read, or emails you study…

The point is, a long healthy life isn’t something we stumble into with a side of bacon hanging out of our cheek.

It takes careful planning, determination, discipline and the courage to be different from the rest of the world.

It takes something that looks...well, a bit CRAZY.

And that’s why we take the time to send you these messages each and every week. There’s much thinking required to achieve anything good in the physical realm…

In closing, here’s one last quote (which I love) that drives all of this home:

Watch your thoughts, they become words.

Watch your words, they become actions.

Watch your actions,, they become habits.

Watch your habits, they become character.

Watch your character, it becomes destiny!
