12 Days of Updates (#5: Brittany Phillips)

This is an update for episode #105, which covered the tragic story of 18-year-old Brittany Phillips, whose body was found in her Tulsa, Oklahoma-apartment more than 15 years ago. In my original episode, I remained hopeful that DNA testing might provide answers for the 2004 murder, but now that no longer looks to be the case.

This is Day #5 of my new holiday-themed series, the 12 Days of Updates. Over the next two weeks, I'll be catching up on some stories I've previously covered and detail what we've learned in the months/years since.

The Castration Murders

The Castration Murders

"We found drag marks and blood spatters leading from the highway to the trees. It looks like someone just drove up, dragged the body out of the car, dumped it and then drove away."In June of 1982, the body of 21-year-old Marty Shook was discovered in Daniel's Canyon, a mountain pass near Heber City, Utah. He had been shot once in the back of the head with a .38-caliber handgun, but most shockingly, had been castrated postmortem by his killer, with Wasatch County Sheriff's Det. Stevan Ridge describing the victim as "really carved up." Over the next several years, investigators would struggle to identify the killer(s) of Marty Shook, who had only been hitchhiking for two days before the discovery of his nude body. However, in 1988, following the submission of Marty's case into VICAP (Violent Criminal Apprehension Program), analysts discovered that he may have just been one victim of a sadistic serial killer... "Sometimes in life, our stories don't have happy endings. I'm sorry to say that this is one of those stories..."On the morning of May 8th, 2008, Joshua Maddux told his family he was going to go for a walk. It was a chilly-but-nice day, and a morning walk or hike was not at all unusual for the outdoorsy 18-year-old. Sadly, he never came home, and attempts to track him down proved fruitless for his loved ones. Years later, in 2015, demolition crews made a gruesome discovery: the skeletonized remains of Josh Maddux, approximately two blocks away from his family's home in Woodland Park, Colorado. His remains were inside the chimney of an abandoned cabin near the area's historic Thunderhead Ranch... “Shannon, you killed both of them... you're just one cold-hearted bastard. You're the one that done that, not me."Kimberley Lockyer and Dale Worthman were a young couple that lived together in their small Newfoundland town of Portugal St. Cove Philips. When they disappeared from their basement apartment on August 27th, 1993, it almost seemed like they had simply stepped out for a minute and fully intended on returning.Despite widespread searches throughout the region, no trace of the missing couple was found for over a decade. However, in 2006, the case would be turned upside down when a local man named Joey Oliver went to police and told them where the bodies of Kimberley Lockyer and Dale Worthman could be found...Episode researched & written by Olivia ParadiceEpisode hosted & produced by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

"I don't think it will turn out to be someone who lives here. I think it was just a crime of opportunity."On the morning of 12 June 2006, Anthony Sposato arrived at his pizza shop, Mama Mia N.Y. Style Pizza and Pasta in Stevenson Ranch, California. As soon as he entered in through the front door, he could hear the voice of his longtime friend and coworker, 72-year-old Eddie Politelli, telling someone in the back, "Don't hurt me. I don't have anything."Because of Eddie's joking nature, Anthony immediately thought that the older man was goofing off with somebody. However, as Anthony took a few steps into the restaurant, the reality of the situation began to dawn on him that this was no joke... Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to L.A. "One of the theories is that it was somebody passing through and she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have been anyone that night. We can't find anything that singles out Charlie Atwater as a target."In the early morning hours of 16 January 2000, firefighters responded to a call on the outskirts of Billings, MT. The fire, which seemed to have been intentionally started in a gravel parking lot near the MetraPark Arena, had engulfed a vehicle within minutes of the 3:32 AM call being placed to emergency dispatchers.During the process of extinguishing the fire, firefighters had to force open the trunk of the burning vehicle, a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. When firefighters looked inside, they were shocked to find the body of a local resident, whose distinguishing features had been burned away in the short-lived-yet-powerful blaze... Point Pleasant (Revisited)

Point Pleasant (Revisited)

"Have no fear. We come from a country that is not nearly as powerful as yours. We mean you no harm."Throughout 1966 and 1967, weird encounters were reported all throughout the region of West Virginia surrounding Point Pleasant. These ranged from sightings of bright lights in the sky to more direct encounters with strange beings. Journalists attempted to make sense of the endless barrage of sightings, which seemed to draw closer and closer to Point Pleasant throughout 1967. But when it all culminated in the collapse of the town's Silver Bridge in December of that year, resulting in 46 deaths, people began to question if what they had seen was a dark omen... This episode is brought to you by "THE MOTHMAN TAPES," a found-footage horror movie made by myself and my friends over at 1289 Films (who have previously produced such films as "The Acid King" and "Homecoming"). Ray Gricar

Ray Gricar

"The state police used a helicopter to search for two hours along the banks of the Susquehanna River, near where his car was found, for any signs.... Investigators also used a bloodhound to try to pick up his scent, to no avail."On 15 April 2005, Ray Gricar called into his office and took a half-day off of work. The 59-year-old Ohio native worked as the District Attorney for Pennsylvania's Centre County, and despite having plenty to do that Friday, nobody thought twice about the esteemed prosecutor taking time off of work, as he had been complaining of fatigue for weeks. That evening, Ray would fail to contact his girlfriend, Patty Fornicola, who he lived and worked with. She called 911 at approximately 11:30 PM, resulting in a desperate search for any sign of Ray or his vehicle...
