30 Years of Treasury Lessons with Karen Molloy

30 Years of Treasury Lessons with Karen Molloy

In this episode of The Treasury Career Corner podcast, I’m pleased to be joined by Karen Molloy, Vice President and Treasurer at Northwestern Mutual.

Northwestern Mutual celebrated their 160th anniversary in 2019 and have been providing financial services to their policy owners – not shareholders – since day one. From the story of their Board of Trustees personally borrowing money to settle an extraordinary claim in 1859 to paying an expected $6bn in dividends to over 4.5m policy owners in 2020, Northwestern Mutual have always been focused on client satisfaction.

Northwestern Mutual pride themselves on offering a holistic service to their clients. Offering everything from college savings plans and wealth management to retirement planning and life insurance, Northwestern Mutual aims to serve its clients at every stage of their lives.

Karen Molloy has been at the heart of Northwestern Mutual’s continued commitment to its clients for the last 30 years. Holding the position of Vice President and Treasurer since January 2012, Karen has worked her way up the business with dedication, talent, and an instinct for treasury. However, she readily admits becoming Treasurer was “never on [her] radar”, Karen has taken every opportunity for progression in her stride and learned some important lessons along the way.

It’s a real honour to have Karen join me for this episode of The Treasury Career Corner podcast, in which she kindly shares some of the most important lessons from the last 30 years.

On the podcast we discussed…

  • The benefits of working for a mutual company
  • How a holistic approach to treasury means a better service for clients
  • The ways treasury has changed in the last 30 years, especially with advancements in technology
  • How Karen progressed her career and the ethos with which she has always worked
  • Why CPD is so important for treasurers
  • Karen’s leadership style and advice for recruiting great team members
