City Slickers (1991)

This week on Shat The Movies, Gene and Big D rope in a modern Western classic with City Slickers (1991), a film that's equal parts midlife meltdown, male bonding, and calf-birthing madness. Commissioned as a birthday gift from Ken to Eileen, Shat The Movies Episode 450 explores the heartfelt—and sometimes hilarious—journey of three friends finding purpose on a New Mexico cattle drive.

Gene shares personal reflections on Americana cosplay, toxic corporate life, and the ever-elusive "one thing," while Big D opens up about aging, friendship, and why his idea of bliss is scrubbing solar panels at 6 a.m. They dive into masculinity, mental health, Billy Crystal's Mets cap, and the emotional weight behind Jack Palance's Oscar-winning performance.

Oh, and yes—there's an in-depth discussion about cow afterbirth, horse anatomy, and "horse beans." You're welcome.

Plot Summary:

City Slickers is a 1991 Western comedy directed by Ron Underwood and starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Bruno Kirby. It follows Mitch Robbins, a disillusioned 39-year-old New Yorker stuck in a midlife crisis, who embarks on a two-week cattle drive through the Southwest with his best friends Phil and Ed.

Expecting a macho escape from their mundane lives, the trio instead face emotional reckoning, cowboy philosophy, and unexpected tenderness—including the birth of a calf Mitch names Norman. Along the way, they're guided by the grizzled trail boss Curly (Jack Palance in an Oscar-winning role), whose "one thing" lesson helps Mitch discover what really matters. Both funny and surprisingly poignant, City Slickers blends comedy with heartfelt introspection about friendship, adulthood, and the pursuit of meaning in middle age.

Clerks (1994)

Clerks (1994)

"Clerks" put director Kevin Smith on the map and taught '90s kids we all could be directors with just a roll of black-and-white film, a few friends, and a credit card. The conversations were witty, fast-paced, and perhaps a little too cheeky. The actors were unseasoned and awkward. The situations were edgy for 1994. And buried in all of it was a different style of storytelling that would blossom into the View Askewniverse.  This landmark independent film brought us Berserker, blowjob counts, rooftop hockey, Jay and Silent Bob, and a snapshot of a world somewhere between the unabashed fun of the '80s and the slick production of the new millennium.  If you're a fan of Big D and Gene ganging up on Ash, this is the episode for you. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

The 1978 "Halloween" was a hit with the Shat The Movies crew, so we were overjoyed when loyal listener Tom C. in Texas chose its sequel "Halloween 4" as this year's Spooktacular special. "The Return of Michael Myers" has everything we loved about the original, minus the spectacular boobs, plus some great '80s special effects. Michael is deadlier. The town is more violent, and Dr. Loomis is a lot more Dr. Loomisy. Perhaps the scariest part is a look back at parenting in the '80s. Why did our parents let us eat what we ate? Why did they leave us alone when we needed them most? Why did they let us wander around town in the dark on Halloween night, visiting strangers' homes and mingling with adults wearing disguises? Why didn't they make us wear pants? Really, it's a miracle any of us lived to see 2020. So let's celebrate life by cheering for deaths. That's the true spirit of the season.  Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ HELP SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Get Podcast Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989)

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989)

Shat The Movies is proud to complete it's first film trilogy, and what better series than "Indiana Jones," whose original three movies began and ended in the Shatacular '80s. The Nazis are back, the leading lady is sly, and we are treated to the super, sexy, scandalous, slippery, scientific Scotsman Sean Connery in one of the best comedic pairings of the decade. "The Last Crusade" gave us back the Indy we love: a grave desecrating, German killing, clumsy nerd who just happens to always come out on top. But it's not without nonsense. The Shat Crew explores inconsistencies in the Holy Grail's legend, problems with the tank scene, and the criminal misuse of sidekicks. Commissioners Candice and Andy loved the movie so much, they named their daughter Indiana. We hope you'll dig it, too. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)

Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)

Back in 2017, we awarded "Raiders of The Lost Ark" a perfect wipe score. The magical combination of Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, and Karen Allen was irresistible and timeless. But change the writing, change the villains, and change the lead lady, and you wind up with a very different movie in the 1984 prequel—one with xenophobia, ridiculous physics, bloated scenes, and a very different Indy. Missteps aside, "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" remains a classic with its action sequences, creative set design, quotable lines, lovable characters, and that ultra-fun mine cart escape. Plus, the organ removal, child slavery, and gratuitous body count basically led to the invention of PG-13 Movies. Is "Temple of Doom" the weakest movie in the "Indiana Jones" franchise, or are Big D and Ash justified in their love for a misunderstood film? Listen and judge for yourself. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Every child of the '80s remembers "Maximum Overdrive," that cool horror movie where cars come alive and a green goblin semi-truck tries to kill Emilio Estevez. What we don't remember is how high Stephen King was when he decided to write and direct a film in which guns aim themselves, kids get run over by steamrollers, and aliens attempt to use cosmic broom against mankind. Still, there's a lot to enjoy about "Maximum Overdrive": the AC/DC soundtrack, a murderous soda machine, truck stop love, newlyweds, Big D's selfishness, and of course the beautifully weird color of '80s blood. Detroit Rock City (1999)

Detroit Rock City (1999)

In a year when seeing concerts became impossible, listener Chris T. commissioned a movie about four teenagers doing the impossible to see the greatest show of their lives: "Detroit Rock City." You wanted the best? You got ... the Shat Crew talking dead siblings, paper concert tickets, shitty moms, cutting class, dream Volvos, Detroit landmarks, Gene's old band, shaking your wee wee, Amanda Finch, and of course KISS. Will Shat The Movies give "Detroit Rock City" the respect it never got at the box office, or is it time to acknowledge this Edward Furlong movie flopped for a reason? Time to paint your face, pour some cold gin, crank up the pod, and find out. Escape to Victory (1981)

Escape to Victory (1981)

If you love soccer and the world's nicest Nazis, then "Escape to Victory" is the movie for you. Listener Joe T commissioned this World War II POW tale from across the pond, then was kind enough to call in with the most professional voicemail we've ever received. "Victory" is a movie that proved actors want to be footballers, and footballers want to be actors, and the French Resistance always gets the short end of the stick. Hear Gene's frustration with the shower scene, Big D's disappointment in Pele, and Ash's indignation with butchered French.  SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ HELP SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Get Podcast Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" did everything an '80s high school movie was supposed to do. It did it first, and it did it best. The cast of young actors grew up to be some of the biggest names in Hollywood, Cameron Crowe went on to write "Jerry McGuire" and "Almost Famous," and director Amy Heckerling changed America's view of teens again when she created "Clueless." Find out how "Fast Times" taught Big D about women's struggles; why Ash's mom calls it "the abortion movie," and why Gene thinks shopping malls will make a comeback. Also ... the bikini scene ... yeah, it still holds up.
