In June 2018, Tristan Beaudette and his brother-in-law Scott McCurdy had left their wives in Orange County to embark on a final camping trip together before Tristan and his wife Erica relocated to the Bay Area. Their home for the night …Malibu Creek State Park, near beautiful Malibu Beach. After a night by the campfire, Beaudette and McCurdy went to their respective tents and settled in for bed. Already asleep inside the separate tents were their most treasured possessions: Scott’s two boys, ages 3 and 5 and Tristan’s daughters, 2 and 4. Sometime after 1 in the morning on June 22, 2018, Scott was awakened by what he thought were fireworks. Then he heard Tristan’s daughters crying. Scott told his boys to stay put while he went to Tristan’s tent to investigate. There, he saw Tristan lying face down in the center of the tent and his daughters huddled together, crying. Tristan’s face was covered in blood.  Given Malibu’s reputation as a safe beach town, nobody believed Tristan’s murder was a random act of violence. On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The prosecution claimed that her words led to Conrad's death. In this episode, Jami walks listeners through the case and breaks down the docuseries I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. When someone gets involved in the drug trade, violence usually isn’t far behind. It’s a dangerous path to tread where survival can hinge almost entirely upon alliances. If you piss off the wrong person, you might pay with your life. In the late 1980s, Missouri native Darrell Mease encountered an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease’s life on a deeply violent trajectory. It would escalate into an extreme act of revenge outside a serene cabin in the Ozark mountains where an entire family would be murdered.
