Disability Pride Month: What It Means to Me - Ep13

Disability Pride Month: What It Means to Me - Ep13

Listen in for today’s answer from an anonymous Instagram follower… “While your life has probably turned out very different than you thought with all of the health challenges, what is an accomplishment you’re proud of?”

In this short episode, I touch on the significance of Disability Pride Month, which marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). President George W.H. Bush signed the ADA on July 26, 1990, marking a historic milestone in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. Join me as I talk about some of the obstacles we face and the importance of promoting awareness and compassion.

Disability pride isn’t about being proud or glad you have a disability or about loving your symptoms and limitations, it’s about taking pride in your strength! - Sarah Reid

Helpful takeaways for this episode:

  • Disability Pride Month is a month-long celebration held to recognize the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and promote awareness and understanding of the disability community.

  • Disabilities include a wide range of physical and mental conditions that can impact an individual’s daily activities, such as depression, sensory impairments, autism, chronic illness, and autoimmune diseases.

  • Disability pride is about acknowledging the challenges faced and celebrating the strength, resilience, and triumphs of people with disabilities.

  • Disabilities shape a person’s identity and influence their experiences. Being secure in yourself and advocating for others are ways we can embrace disability pride.

  • Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress we've made and the awareness we've spread.
