Going Dredd - Interview w/Tansy Gardam

David sits down with Tansy Gardam, creator of the Going Rogue podcast, to discuss her latest episode analyzing the 2012 film Dredd and its connection to The Raid as "twin films." Tansy argues that Alex Garland effectively "shadow directed" Dredd, challenging traditional notions of auteur theory while exploring the collaborative nature of filmmaking. The conversation covers Garland's evolution from novelist to screenwriter to director, examining how his approach to authorship reflects broader industry trends toward TV-style showrunner models in film production.

The discussion expands to explore Garland's recent controversial work including Warfare, which Tansy describes as "borderline evil," and his creative trajectory from the satirical critique of Dredd to more troubling militaristic themes. They delve into the technical aspects of both Dredd and The Raid's production, from 3D filming techniques to Indonesian martial arts choreography, while examining how these "twin films" illuminate the complex realities of modern film production and the tendency to oversimplify creative processes by focusing solely on directors.
