EP 32: Holocaust Survivor Leo Ullman Tells His Incredible Story

As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we talk to Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman. He was born in Amsterdam in July of 1939, which makes him one of the youngest Holocaust survivors– and the few Holocaust survivors who are still living today. Leo was just three years old when his family went into hiding in Amsterdam. That’s the same city where another young Jewish person, Anne Frank, was also in hiding. Leo was raised by a Christian family for 796 days. He’s since written a book called ‘796 Days’ about that experience and his family’s eventual escape to the United States after WWII. Hear Leo’s incredible story, what life was like for his family before and after the war, why they decided to come to America, and what he thinks about the resurgence in antisemitism and Holocaust denial. And hear the backstory of five missing pages of Anne Frank’s diary.
