Harry's Story: ADHD and Addiction...the Linkages and Realities

*Trigger Warning: Addiction and Mental Health

Alcoholism and addiction continues to be the theme of the podcast this month.

We know alcohol is a drug. We know it's been classified as the most dangerous and damaging drug in the UK above heroine and crack cocaine. And, we know its' destroying lives and families at an alarming rate.

But, what many people don't know, is that there is a link between those who have ADHD and alcoholism/addiction .

According to Rehabs UK:

  • between 33% and 44% of young people with ADHD experience alcohol misuse or dependency
  • people with ADHD are 5-10 x more likely to have alcohol addiction than those without ADHD

Research indicates that impulsive and reckless behaviour, as well as high novelty seeking traits, which are common symptoms of ADHD, are high risk factors for substance abuse. And 70% of young adults with both substance abuse issues and ADHD report that they use alcohol or substance as a means to self medicate; an attempt to switch off an over active brain or attempting to slow down racing thought processes. The links and correlation between ADHD and addiction is very much misunderstood and often over looked.

Joining host Jennie in today's episode is Harry Martin. Harry is diagnosed ADHD and has battled with addiction most of his life. Harry's experience with substance abuse started as young as 12 years old and carried on into adulthood. Now, in his 30's, Harry is living alcohol free. On this episode, he very honestly tells his story of how having ADHD has a direct correlation to his addiction issues. At the height of his addiction, Harry was homeless and living for his next drink or high. With the support of his mom and wife, and with the birth of his daughter, Harry is now on a path to sobriety. But, it is not without its daily challenges. This episode is raw and confronting. Harry holds nothing back. This is a must listen for anyone with ADHD or similar, battling addiction, and feeling like there's no way to quiet your mind. There is a path forward, and there is support available to you...you are NOT alone.
